Thank you for the beautiful and stunning video footage of the Deschenes Rapids. I am a fellow Ottawan who recently made the terrible mistake of venturing into the rapids on a inflatable kayak. On that windless and sunny day, I kayaked from Britannia Beach all the way to the middle of the river near the yacht club, then made the critical bad judgement to go a bit further towards the Quebec side. On my way back, the strong current pushed me all the way into the Rapids. I knew about the Rapids and have observed it from both sides of the river. It is probably the pandemic and fatigue that clouded my judgement: I thought the rapids were still a couple kilometers downstream. Anyway, I managed to remain calm, and navigate myself safely back to the southern shore (where the little island is). This is such an extraordinary experience, I knew I was stupid but I learned a good lesson without being traumatized. I would like to express my heart-felt appreciation for this drone footage, which helps me relive the experience, and reflect on the beautify of nature.
Thanks Distance Shooter. I bet it is way different on the Pacific than the Caribbean and way way different than what I sail on presently. I am really looking forward to when we eventually transit the Panama Canal and make it into the Pacific. There are so many places we want to explore on that side of our continent. It's a good thing that we will be retired by then so that I will have the time. :-)
Great video, enjoying your series. Have to disagree with you about paddling the Rapids. They are a blast in high water. But do agree that I would not want to be anywhere near then in a sailboat.
Hey Paul. Glad you are liking the series. You are probably right. In the spring when there is high water and if you have a proper white water kayak and a good helmet, Im sure it is doable. This time of year when the water is low I bet you are just banging off one rock and then another on those rapids. That video was shot in June when the water was higher than it is now. Most of the rocks look like they are just below the surface so, it didn't look safe to me. But, Im not a white water kayak guy, so what do I know. If you are in the area and want to try, Im willing to drone over you and film the whole spectacle. :-)
We live in SW Florida and have been going to all the boat shows for the past six years. We have a 14 year old son...so our planned cruising date is about 5-6 years away. We too will be in a used catamaran. Hope to keep in touch and see/meet you and Janice one day. If you get to the Sarasota/Port Charlotte area (just north of Naples..you remember Naples..right ?? :) )...give me a ring.
Cool. Our plan is to buy a Cat in 6 years and spend some time getting it outfitted to be our home and then sail away and explore the world in 7 years. So we have a similar time frame. You might be a year ahead of me so keep me posted how you boat purchase goes. We LOVED Naples. So pretty in that area.
I'm a history fanatic and while i can't speak for everyone, i really enjoy the little history sessions you do. being in America they don't tell us much of anything about the history of other places, so it's really nice to watch stunning video with nice little informative narrations in there. great video :)
Hey Sean. Thanks for the positive comment. I plan to keep doing videos that have some informative value and maybe are visually pleasing with areal visuals with my drone. I can't really compete with the Sailing Channels on TH-cam that have the hot babes in string bikinis. :-) So I will have to inform rather than give people "eye candy".
Wow what nice imagery and descriptions. Above the Deschênes Rapids the Ottawa must be a deep river. The Off Duty's draft has to be 4 feet or more. I imagine you have to know the river. Sounds wonderful.
Yes the Ottawa River is a plenty deep to sail all over the place for the 27 Km length. But it is landlocked so after a while you end up going up and down the same body of water over and over. This is why we are moving our boat to the St Lawrence and the Great Lakes for next season. Off Duty has a shoal draft wing keel and it draws 5'. Just as an FYI. Thanks for writing.
When I was younger my family didn't own a boat but every summer my parents would rent a houseboat for a week (or 2). And that is how I got a taste of boating. One season we did the Trent Severn Waterway. Another season we did the Big Rideau Canal/Lake system. It is quite fun taking those waterways as you see a lot of little towns along the way.
My childhood boating was on the inland lakes of Northern Michigan. Presently we visit a lot of small towns via motorcycle touring. That's where I first spotted the Trent Severn waterway in Trenton Ont.
I was doing some reading on the Ottawa River Sailing Page and apparently they tried to build a canal around the Chats Falls in the 1850s but they couldn't get thru the rock with what they had. This "rock cut" is in the corner of Pontiac Bay though, so not sure how easy it would to get a boat through there anyway.. I've been thinking of buying a small boat and docking in Arnprior to explore that part of the river and with the way the market is this should be fairly inexpensive.
Nicely done Adam. I have read the same thing. Someone many many years ago tried to cut a channel through the rock in an attempt to make a lock but the Rock was just too tough and it was becoming too expensive so they gave up. I also hear that the location that is now the Britania Yacht club was an passage that was a planned lock but for some reason it also did not end up working out. So, now we are landlocked forever it seems.
Nice drone shots. Are you okay if I pull some bits for a video I'm putting together to go with a song I wrote about the Ottawa river? It's actually a background video for live performances (at least online), not an actual music video. I can credit you if you like. No worries either way.
Have to agree The water level is too low in the summer for sure. Unfortunately I have not paddled the Ottawa River in years. Could say I have semi-retired from whitewater and gone to sailing. But if you want some awesome whitewater footage head to the park on Bate island in high water. Really enjoying your videos. Keep um coming.
Thanks Paul. I did white water rafting with those Ottawa River Rafting companies a few times. That is fun stuff. But never tried white water Kayaking. I think that is a bit too extreme for me at my age now.
Yup, took a lot of nice looking boats off my list when I was shopping because they were on the Ottawa and transport wasn't in the budget. Awesome footage BTW.
It gets hot in canada?? I didn't know that, it's 100+ in Utah right now! that is 38+ in celsius.I guess it's all relative. Do more videoes you do a great job.
Yes it gets hot here in the summer. 32 today. expected 35 for the next 2 days. It is a humid heat too so at 35 you don't want to be outside doing work. Luckily I have a boat to escape to. :-)
at 5.38 did I see a seagull ? I'd not be so surprised, we bought our boat in Germany on the Neckar river, we were around 550 km from the cost but there were seagulls on the water, little rascals !
Yes. There are seagulls here. Even though we are in the middle of the country, no where near the ocean there are still seagulls. I guess we have so much water everywhere in Canada that they migrate everywhere. What we have way way too many of is Canadian Geese. Those huge birds are a pain. They eat non stop and have poop the size of small dog's. Not that the poop is the size of the dog. That would be extra gross !! ha ha
Hi Craig, watched ep 1 to 4 and enjoyed it, I subscribed and will watch the rest for sure, awesome series, keep up the good work. I served as an Military Police for 25 years and had to retire for family reasons, I like you dream of sailing around our beautiful planet one day, I hope your dream comes true. Cheers!
Hey Benoit. Thanks so much for commenting on the videos. Also thanks for your service. My brother in law is an MP. It is a tough job due to the need to deploy and get posted to bases all over Canada. It is really hard on your family. I totally get why you would need to leave a bit early for family reasons. Knowing the strain it puts on my brother in laws family life ..... I don't think I could do 30 years there.
Ya. I am surprised they weren't built 100 years ago. Now that no one uses the river for transporting goods and commerce, the Government will never spend money to build locks just for the recreational boater. All of the canals and locks you see were all built 100 years ago for economic growth reasons.
Great videos. I am confused. Why would you purchase at top of the line boat......and promise your wife to scuba dive and such....however you are stuck in a river? It is a nice boat BTW.
Hey Nacra. I am sure I mentioned this in the first episode, but it may have been explained too quickly to be clear. The plan is to only have this Mono-hull until I retire in 6 years and then we are selling everything (Boat, Cars, House, MC etc etc) and taking all of the money and buying a Catamaran that we will live on for decades and the plan is to sail around the world and explore everywhere. With this channel, I plan to document it all as we go. I will name my next boat "Off Duty" as well. We have already been window shopping and picking the Catamarans we would buy if we could go now. Ottawa is not near the Ocean and the closest big body of water (Lake Ontario) is 2 hours away. We find that a bit too far to drive 4 hrs round trip to go see our boat. So we are stuck here. Our only choice if we want to sail near where we live is to sail on the Ottawa River. But once we live year round in the more "Caribbean Climates" with clear blue water, things like Scuba Diving will be a big past time. The Ottawa River is murky and not a place to Scuba. Thanks for the question. Maybe others were confused as well. :-)
Sorry, I don't speak French well enough to write it, but I got the theme of what you wrote. You are welcome and enjoy the Ottawa River area. It is a very social sailing scene. We miss it a lot.
Craig, please hit me back. I sold my boat in 2013 due to work obligations. You and Janice have renewed by deadened soul, work will do that. I am now looking at a 42' and looking to check out..... would love to chat, as you both have rekindled my fire....thank you

You can get to Ottawa by the Parliament buildings but to get from the bottom of these rapid to the top where Britania Beach is and this area called Lac Duchenes you would need to be trucked. Black Jack was trucked around these rapids and probably that was when you said it was Dry Docked. There is no Lock to get past these rapids. The water is too shallow to boat in this area as well. Oh OK. I thought you were saying Black Jack motored all the way to Britania where they lifted it to do work on it. I was just saying at best it got to Parliament Hill area and trucked the rest.
Would building locks next to the Deschene Rapids and/or Chat Falls be possible? That could be one solution to get around these two obstacles in a boat. And possibly another source of local revenue for the authorities.

We are in Kingston. Have been for 5 seasons.
@@Bowmans-Woods I couldn't find any slips in Kingston this year. Too bad....it's a great town.
So let me get this straight Were looking to move to Ottawa we own a 62 foot Yacht, so we're limited to a 27mile lake?

Here in Colorado, we go down rivers on inner tubes with much larger rapids.
Ya. The rocks are too close to the surface for that sort of fun. Up river there are proper white water rapids that you can go down.

BTW, don't eat the fish from the Ottawa River. The truth about the Chalk River Plant and it's radio active impact on the fish species is covered up.

All that footage is right in Ottawa. How far from downtown Ottawa? 15 -20 minute drive down the Ottawa River parkway, I'd guess.
