You mentioned retiring to a catamaran and sailing around the world. You might enjoy checking out the "Gone with the Wynns" channel. They are a young couple who transitioned from living full time in a RV to a 42' catamaran. They shopped, bought, had surveyed and hired a professional to teach them seamanship all in south Florida. I think you'll find it interesting.
Good to know. I think when it comes time to look for used Cats for our future boat, we will be willing to fly to wherever the best deal is on the model we want. If it ends up being in the Med, then that is cool. Then our world travels will just start from that area of the world instead of the Caribbean where we assumed we would start.
We used to see this issue a lot up river when we had our racing boat in Petawawa. It's just not the best place to sail. But you do your best when you have to work there.
Yes. The only navigable water we have near where we live and work in the Ottawa River. It may not be the best water but it is still sailing and any day sailing is better than nothing.
Hi Craig and Janice! Good job on the vid's! I had no idea the Ottawa River was limited by Fitzroy and Deschenes! So check out "Shaun & Julia Sailing"! They are about to enter the Erie Canal in the next week at Tonowanda, New York (Buffalo), on their way to tie up in Florida for the winter. Next year they are off to the Bahamas where they will by a bigger boat for their circumnavigation. These are really good video's and topics! Good job! I don't have a boat yet. I was down in Lake Erie this past week sailing with Shaun for two days. We sailed from Port Glasgow to Port Burwell (The HMCS Ojibwa, a de-commissioned sub is there) and then from Burwell to Port Dover. Over 100 miles sailing in 2 days. Erie is shallow and that makes it wild! Subscribed to you and definitely liking your channel! Thanks for the learning! Mike.
Thanks Mike for the positive comment. I already subscribe to S&J sailing. Being fellow Canadians I look forward to following their journey, as I will probably take a similar path to then down the road. Thanks for the suggestion though.
If you pull up something with your anchor. Tie a small length of rope to the nearest cleat. Loop that rope round the obstruction and back to the same cleat. Now lower your anchor so it frees itself. The rope supports the obstruction. Once your anchor is free, release the rope or cut it minding your fingers and toes. The obstruction drops back the the bottom. This method is also good if you were to accidentally pull up someone else's anchor chain.
I have a few pairs. All cheap off the rack. I would rather have 3 cheap pairs lying around then one expensive pair that i worry about losing, breaking or scratching. :-)
My uncle haze 2,000 subs!!! Well jakes gunna make a channel Uncle Craig and he's going to compete against you to see who gets more subs. Btw it's Conor
How can old logs color a river unless its a currentess rive?r...i could see a lake but in a current the logs would have to give out a constant plume ... (Frances Pick, a University of Ottawa biologist who studies aquatic microbes, said that the quality of the water in the river is, in fact, quite good compared with the water in other rivers of its type and that it is "remarkably clean" upstream from Ottawa. "It's a beautiful river, and it's certainly a river that you can swim in," she said, adding that that's unusual for an urban watercourse. Many people assume the river's brown colour means it's polluted, Pick said. "That's completely wrong. It is naturally a brown-water river," she said, adding that the true source of the colour is organic material from the 14,630,000 hectares of soil and wetlands that drain into the river. "It's like a tannin, basically - it's what you have in tea.")
The whole river all the way as far as it goes north was full of logging camps. Not just here in Ottawa. The wood Leaches Tannins. the river has Dams now all the way along so now it really is like connected lakes. thr current is not that strong along this stretch. Maybe 1/2 knot. Up river from Ottawa the water is quite clean. It just looks like steeped tea. ;-)
The river was this color in Deepriver to pembrook when we sailed on the river 15 years ago. It's just brown. And ya. Lots of logs in it. Good tip for getting your anchor unfouled if not using a retriever line is to take a short chunk of chain around the anchor rode and tie it to a line on your dingy. Then drive toward the anchor in your dingy. The chain will/should slide over the shank of the anchor and continue to pull the anchor out from what ever crap is on it. Happens all the time in Greece.

We love them. We have watched every episode since they started talking about going from RVs to sailing.
Yes but buy the Cat in Europe. They are cheap there. And good place to learn a new boat in Greece and Croatia

OK, thanks. Or we just shake the anchor up and down with brute strength until it falls off. Thats my caveman way. ha ha.
Yo! What's the brand of shades you're wearing?

Hey Conor. Well I wish him luck. :-)

Thanks for the tip Buffalo.
Hi , I sail on my yacht 95 % of the time by my self and love it, but a good lady would be better.
I agree Capt ! Sailing alone is better than not sailing at all but is made all the more pleasant when Janice is with me. :-)
