    Such a cool project! My Great-grandfather was on a train almost to New York to ship out to WWI when the war ended in 1918! When they got word about the war's end, they put all the soldiers on another train heading back home to Texas! Man... using that rail track for this project is so flipping awesome!

    I have one similar to the lighter you made, it belongs to my great grandfather, full brass body, "1911 England" is etched on it's bottom, the only difference is that the striker wheel is mounted on the top of a brass tube containing the flint and the spring, the tube is then inserted into the lighter from the top which makes it removable.
    Enjoyed the whole video. .

    I collect Trench Art. I clicked on this video because I was hoping to perhaps get some ideas about how to repair some of the trench lighters that I have at home. Not far in, I cried foul because those things were made, by hand, often with improvised tools, by people that were doing it out of boredom in between bouts of mortal terror, and this is not that. Surely, this is nonsense! It wasn't. The amount of care and attention that you put into these is beyond question. I'm beyond impressed. Well done. It maybe wasn't what I thought it could be, but it's bloody fantastic. Carry on, please.

    I love the design and historical elements. I would still like to see a version that allows for one-handed operation so you'd need to devise a system that allows for the removal of the cap and a detention system. A simple thumb-post off the side of the cap could be pushed up and off the lighter and in that post could be a cord or chain that attaches it to the lighter's body. That might require both hands to re-cap it though or some dexterity to manipulate the chained-cap back on.
    As a "trench lighter", one-handed operation would seem useful, maybe even necessary. But clearly there's a whole century of invention that 's taken place to address these issues but straying from this form factor. I hope to see you evolve the design while maintaining the original spirit. I'm sure you'll figure it out. Cheers.

    Need this. I carry an Exotac TitanLight and it’s machined so incredibly well that it’ll hold fluid for…? 8 months plus? With very little evaporation. However, it’s a little too large for every day carry, and, while I certainly appreciate the functionality and the aesthetic, the latter leaves a little bit to be desired.
    Along comes this badass piece that essentially checks all the boxes for me.

    Is the windscreen also acting as a heat sink, drawing enough heat from the flame that it is inhibited? You did get it to work by allowing more air to reach the flame so it is no longer an issue. Most commercial lighters use stainless steel which is a relatively poor conductor to protect the flame. It is a beautifully wrought idea. Thank you for sharing.

      why?

    • @thecrapadventuresofchesimo420
      @thecrapadventuresofchesimo420 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      Because steel without radioactive inclusions (from nuclear weapons testing globally) is needed for modern physics experiments.

    • @Error-z8g
      @Error-z8g 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +10

      We can still make steel without radio activity, it's just much more expensive than regular steel.
      Also... there's tons of old cars and trucks, ships, all sorts of steel from before 1945 is around, it's really not that big of a deal.

    • @PolarisRider06
      @PolarisRider06 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Modern steel making processes that inject pure oxygen into the iron instead of atmospheric air like the Bessemer process does eliminates the issue of the steel giving off background radiation as long as it is new virgin steel being made and not being blended with any recycled iron.
      Also, the laboratories are not that interested in getting pre atomic steel for experiments becausethey are not doing experiments on the steelnor with the steel, and if they are they know it isnt that hard to get the small amounts they need.
      It's the instrument companies who are interested in "low background radiation" steel, "pre atomic" steel being one of the sources of that. Reason being, you don't want your instruments putting off radiation if you are trying to read radiation levels, so the cases and stands and everything else they make they want to use "low background radiation" steel. Universities don't need pre atomic steel, but some laboratories at some universities need instruments made with materials that don't introduce unnecessary background radiation. The companies that build the tools and instruments that read radiation levels need it more than colleges and universities, and there are multiple ways to get low background radiation steel now days that don't involve reworking pre 1945 scrap steel.
      As already stated, moden processes that inject pure oxygen into the iron eliminate the issue of radiation being introduced into iron during the steel making process.
      Another fun fact, the amount of atmospheric radiation is now getting down near the "pre atomic" levels, so it won't be long before even new steel made using the Bessemer process will be the same as "pre atomic" steel.
