Most Amazing Head Stone! Mahalia Graveyard and Old Philadelphia Graveyard

  • This video concludes Cecil's and my Marion County, Georgia cemetery tour... for now. We explore two fascinating cemeteries: the Mahalia African American graveyard and the Old Philadelphia graveyard.
First, we visit the Mahalia African American graveyard. Interestingly, this cemetery also contains Caucasian graves that predate the African American burials. A brief history states that when you walk into the Mahalia Chapel graveyard, you find a rusted iron fence, which used to bear the name Peoples. The Peoples were a Caucasian family who had been using this as a burial ground before African Americans did from Mahalia Chapel. Sadly, only remnants of the old iron fence remain, as cemetery fences used to often get stolen, and it is evident that is what happened here.
Next, we venture to the Old Philadelphia graveyard on the other side of the county. This cemetery stands out with its elaborate monuments, reflecting the greater wealth of the area. One of the most striking memorials is a beautifully carved clamshell with a baby inside, marking the grave of a child. The craftsmanship and grandeur of the monuments here contrast sharply with those we've seen in other parts of Marion County. Unfortunately, our visit to this cemetery is cut short as our camera unexpectedly dies.
Join us for this poignant conclusion to our cemetery tour, where we delve into the stories and history preserved in these significant graveyards.

It is always so sad to see the infant and children's graves, but that's just the way it was back then without the modern medicines we have today.
My mother's mother miscarried twins and then 5 years later lost a 5 year old daughter to diphtheria. She did have 9 children who lived.
My dad's mother lost a 4 year old from burns she received from catching her dress on fire when she got too close to the fire under the pot that my grandmother (her oldest sister) was washing clothes in. The pioneers had so many tragedies to deal with. They had to be strong in their faith and strong physically also. Thank you for this video, looking forward to the next one.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the work that you do in locating lost cemeteries and the grave restoration work . I was really surprised when I saw that you were at Mahalia chapel cemetery today. This is the cemetery where my great-grandparents are buried as a matter of fact the first headstone that you showed, Reverend George Washington Hartage, is my great-grandfather's grave. I was there on the day about 8 years ago that Cecil spoke of when he and his son came and helped clean up Mahalia chapel cemetery. Once again Cecil thank you and your son for coming out to help us that day at Mahalia Chapel.

Another great tour. Very encouraging to hear that people got together to clean a cemetery.
Very amazing and unigue marker, they really were hurt when that baby died, how heart breaking and sad.
Beautiful and peaceful place for sure.
I found it a surprise that the graves were for the most part from one era and one style of burial.
The Bronze Star Medal (BSM) is a United States Armed Forces decoration awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces for either heroic achievement, heroic service, meritorious achievement, or meritorious service in a combat zone. That shell-shaped headstone was so covered in lichens, that I couldn't tell there was a little baby carved underneath it, at first. It really touched me when my eyes finally focused on it. Cecil; and BOTH Roberts; Dan and all of the others thank you for documenting this for future generations and hopefully mapping them for logging ect. As I have said before that my whole maternal great grandfather and before are lost; no records of death just dropped off census. Kids and wives existed and documented up to my grandfather who died in 1990.
Even crazier because of the war my grandfather made himself 2 years older and went to WW2 at age 16…..I think years of birth are 1917 and 1919?

Robert, thank you for your tour of Marion County. I enjoy watching all your videos. My 2nd great grandparents, Sean (Sim) and Rebecca Allen Hood Horne came from Ireland pre 1850 and lived in Marion County Georgia. I find them in the 1850 census but after that they disappeared from census records. In 1860 my great grandfather is found with the Greenberry Herring family. They came to Arkansas. His older sister, Josephine, went to a family by the name of Larimore, I believe. I have searched Marion County, Georgia Cemetery records on my phone and they are not there. I thought you or Dan might know if there was some sort of epidemic that may have happened between 1850 and 1860 that may be responsible for their disappearance. Again, thank you for all you do.

Will nay of your books ever go to National publishing to where I might get some or will there be a library that will ever record them digitally so that they maybe be found online?? As a Genealogy researcher, asking. The second cemetery you and Cecil visited, and the Hogg headstones, got me, with the Headstone of the sleeping child of the Hogg parents. Never seen on like that, and would be so beautiful if ever cleaned up with some D2. Precious.
