"Die Internationale" is a German version of what is deemed the anthem of socialism, when the socialist workers' movement of the Second International adopted it as their anthem in 1864. The lyricist of the song, Eugene Pottier, attended this congress as well.

Actually mostly to keep spies out of eastern Berlin that before the wall was constructed were easily passing the border from west Berlin every day and it is a fact that up to the year that the wall was constructed eastern Berlin was considered to be the place on earth with the most spies at a single time and place.

It was partially to keep people out as well. East Berlin was marked by acts of sabotage and deliberate destabilisation efforts by Western intelligence until the wall was built in 1961. An open border with a hostile political bloc during such a tense period as the Cold War will lead to nothing but trouble for all parties involved.

It was essentially forced upon them through the sudden introduction of a new currency in the US occupation zones. But that isn't talked about much in history books.
