According to my knowledge; During 1979-88 Saudi Arabia funded Pakistan to produce Mujahideen, while USA was fully active in training and providing strategic support to Mujahideen, which was utilised by Pakistan on Mujahideen and Pakistan as well. There were three types of Taliban, Haqqani Network, Masud and Rabbani, Pakistan was in favour of Haqqani. When USSR defeated and departed, Kabul was under Dr. Najibullah Communist Reign. Pakistan wanted to bring Hekmatyar in power against his government. Kabul fall in 1992, Now Masoud Network took over Kabul. Pakistan and Saudi backed Haqqani network took the conquered Kandahar in 1994, Kabul in 1996 and rest of the country in 1998. According to Ahmed Rashid, Pakistan trained 80,0000-10,0000 plus Mujahideen (Taliban) during 1994-99 to keeps Taliban in power.
Neither Soviet Union, nor USA were interested in any war in Afghanistan, Pakistan was the initiator of the whole conflict, from one side the Pakistani intelligence agencies were creating and training the extremist afghan militants in Pakistan and sending them into Afghanistan to distrupt security there from 1973-1974 onwards, which was creating concerns of growing extremism in Afghanistan and central Asia within the Soviet Union leadership, at the same time Pakistan was lobbying to USA for the support of these militant groups, which resulted in the growing interference of Soviet Union first and then the interreference of USA through Pakistan in Afghanistan, and it resulted in the destruction of Afghanistan.
