  • In this episode of ‘Editorial,’ Mr. Sujit Nair delves into the controversy surrounding the alleged NEET paper leak and its impact on students across the country. The NEET-UG exam, which took place on May 5 and was taken by over 24 lakh candidates, has become contentious following the announcement of its results.
Initially slated for release on June 14, the results were unexpectedly released 10 days early on June 4, coinciding with the announcement of the Lok Sabha poll results.
Several factors have contributed to the controversy over the NEET-UG results:
Sixty-seven students achieved perfect scores of 720. Scores of 718 and 719 were reported, which some claim is impossible given the NEET marking scheme. The early release of the NEET-UG results on June 4, the same day as the LS poll results. A significant number of NEET-UG 2024 top scorers hail from the same examination center. Allegations of NEET question paper leaks have surfaced.

Even when there was no NEET, there was private quota in these colleges. Scrapping NEET doesn't mean that the quota goes away.

Even a very simple policy the indian education ministry cannot see - how can poor students sit in Kota coaching room and cram for 20 hrs a day for years. This is a fixed match by just sitting and cramming for years for a exam. Medicine particularly need holistic selection process - some exam marks, some board exam, some social background and stand in societal service etc.

Another point that is not discussed is the cost of attending NEET coaching at these centers. Some centers / schools start NEET coaching starting 8th standard and it costs approximately 8 lac rupees as fees for 4 years. This is again affordable only to the rich and benefits the coaching institutes, mostly located in cities or urban areas.
Tamilnadu had earlier used school marks as the basis of obtaining medical seats. This ensured that poor children from government schools from even rural areas got medical admission. These poor kids who graduated from medical colleges continued to serve those in rural areas, thus improving medical facilities all throughout.

Dear Mr Nair, Many years ago I happened to enroll in the MBA program conducted by the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside in Chennai. While the program itself was expensive, one feature stands out after all these year. As the dean said in his welcome address, its very easy to get in into the course but getting out through the other end is very difficult. I think this is food for thought. Which means that the filtration process for a candidate is not for entry but for an exit during which the candidate is qualified. Another feature of this program was the marking system which seperates the chaff from the wheat. You should really look at the UK higher education and elucidate us on this.
