Hemi class racing at Indy didn't start with the Dodge Hemi Shootout, but for the last 20 years, it's been perfected. For almost the last decade, CompetitionPlusTV has been bringing you the action in this specialty event. This season, talented cameraman Les Mayhew captures all the action for the 20th-anniversary event.

For the ones that dont know. This engine design started in 1964 . It is the only piston engine design ever to run a sub 4 second run in the 1320.
It has been and always will be the king of the 1320. Long live live the Chrysler Hemi.
My dad met Herb McCandless at Indianapolis Speedway in 1971. Herb was driving for Sox & Martin as the #2 car. He was so kind to my father. He allowed my dad sit in the Challenger he was driving at the time while it was running. He showed my dad how every bolt on that car was rifle drilled. Herb said it shed 30lbs. He also showed my dad how he re-routed the brake booster under the dash so the motor could be moved back as far as possible. My dad has told that story 300 times or more. He picked up alot of tips from Herb that day,....and used alot of it on his hemi powered Dart. It's very cool they have Herb announcing and calling these races. Herb is such a legend and brilliant race car builder.
Watching these cars, thinking about how many rolled out of the factory over fifty years ago, and never left the sport they were destined for, is simply amazing.

It's great seeing Herb there and I love those 4 speeds, even though they don't resemble the old 4 speeds, they are still 4 speeds.

@@johncarl5505 None of the pro classes interest me anymore, Super Stock and Comp are about all that hold my interest.
@@myretirementlife8731 I guess I see things differently. I actually like the parity modern pro classes have. Then again one make series like the Porsche Supercup are some of the racing I like, while most people dislike it.
Don’t know if any of y’all put the captions on but in the final round as the cars are speeding away the caption has that noise captioned as music…. TH-cam you have no idea just how damn right you are!
LOL calling a SS/AH grass-roots racers is comical these are $250,000 race cars.

We need to let Ray Parquet and his (427FE) in this class and let him spin the rules like the Hemis have done🤔 then it would be awesome 👍 I love the Hemi too just saying lol

Ya the joke is Chevy-H-R-A had to FACTOR the FE427 over & over & over & over to let the girl compete.
The 427 can’t make the horsepower , that the hemi is making.... period.

Those who were there when these beautiful and awesome machines were in their prime do not need to hear some knownothing commentator ramble on about these machines.
