Full Unboxing: • ASTRO Gen 2 Headsets U...
A full review of the ASTRO A40 Gen 2 Headsets, MixAmp m80 (which is designed for Xbox One), and the MixAmp Pro. This review talks about the wired headsets works on Xbox One and the PS4. Most of the review focuses on compatibility with these consoles an different setups.
Instant thumbs up for letting me know that the PS4 section starts at 7:40
After acquiring the A40s 2013 edition, I have never looked at another headset since. The fact the it's compatibility is useful 3 ways >X360>PS3>PC there is no need to invest in a product that is built for perfection. Aside I have my TB X11/X12 and XL1 which are currently stowed in my closet in perfect condition. They are of course for back up in case something bad goes wrong, so I believe they will serve a purpose for other consoles.
Sincerely:
A satisfied A40 owner/user
great review driftor, i love how when you review things you literally cover everything people would have questions about.
**READ
The Xbox One version Astro a40's are 7.1 surround sound. To have the controller input the surround sound you go to settings then audio settings and change your settings to Stereo uncompressed, bitstream out, and Dolby Digital.
Are u sure? From everything I've seen, people are pissed because the m80 isn't surround sound.
Jacob Carrera Ya I am sure.and either way if that dosent work in microsofts next update they will make the controller input surround sound, all would be is software.
sorry buddy but this is wrong info. not capable of surround sound. and an update is not going to change that sorry. u need the mixamp pro
An update could fix it its just a stupid software thing on Microsoft's side
This is 100% correct it will convert the sound to DSS.
I bought this headset like 2 weeks ago and i love them
:)
Drift0r i have a aw scuf with four paddles my dreams are ruined im thinking of the elite 800
PGS Titan Dreams are ruined? Your gonna drop 180$ on a *Stereo* headshet? Lmao. They aren't worth 200$ get the Astro A40 TR with the MixAmp Pro for 200$ atleast you will have Surround Sound
I love the Scuf paddle compatability info, I was thinking the same thing, and you answered it! Great job, thanks man!
helped a lot. I have been looking for a good review like this one. Good stuff
For xbox one headsets do you not need to plug anything into the back of your TV anymore? Just plug into the bottom of the controller?
Correct.
I would not advise the m80 set. In all reality the m80 mixamp IS a glorified MS headset adapter and lacks the key ability (imo) of the mix amp pro: being able to connect several devices.
Drift0r So then what is the benefit of the A50s over the A40s now? Since the A50s also require a cable to the controller on the XB1, why the $100 price difference?
memphus A40s with M80 mix amp are only capable of stereo sound, A50s are capable of Dolby Digital 5.1/7.1
So if i buy the Xbox one stereo headset adaptor can i use my old turtle beach x12's(Xbox 360 headset) on the Xbox one just connecting to the controller aswell? Or is it a new headset thing only?
Give me a reason why I should upgrade from my 2013 Astros to these.
I absolutely LOVE my Astros, except for the fact that the mixamp causes less than great mic quality on PS4, as well as my Xbox 360. If there is a significant mic improvement on the new mixamp, I'd probably invest in buying it.
There is no reason to. Pretty sure the only difference in the new mix amp is a micro usb connector instead of a mini usb, plus cosmetics of course.
I think it's strictly a cosmetic change.
Honestly you could get anything other than Astros and get a better headset.
Love Astro's Products. After going through 4 TB's in 2 years I bought an A30 Audio System in 2011 and Haven't looked back since. Its amazing that the Mixamp is nearly 8 years old and no one has been able to match the ease of use, sound quality and flexibility the mixamp offers. Wish they kept the Wireless Mixamp 5.8 around instead of the A50
I have literally just brought the very same headset and a scuff controller for xbox. Great review cheers
Drift0r, I appreciate that you disclose your business arrangements. That's a good practice that more you tubers should do more often. Just subbed.
For some reason, my computers hole, where you need to put the microphone input-thing in (sorry, I don't know the correct word for it) doesn't work. Would I be able to connect the MixAmp with my computer via USB cables, and then plug the headphones in to the MixAmp, and then it would get sound, and I could use the microphone?
It's quite pricey, so I will not buy it, if I'm not sure it will work.
Btw. amazing video, thank you!
Glad you talked about how they work on the scuff thanks
Thank you for the in-depth and informative review.
so I worked in hifi section of a big electronic market during college - and so I found my love ...true hifi sound with head rattling basses throughout headphones ;-)
Of all Gaming Headsets the A40 is probably the second best I've heard. Only the TB z7 had better signature due to the fact that it has less but more precise basses and better mids -> better footsteps.
But so or so - all gamingheadsets suck ! All surround simulations suck ! just get good stereo because this provides you the best and most precise enemy detection possible!
All world pro counterstrike gamers will argue the same.
Also the virtual simulation decreases sound quality by worlds. So this m80 amp is a good thing. The a40 works brilliant with it. But for the same price you could also get the MS headset adapter and a Sony MDR-1A headphone ! This will blow your minds if you try them. I can even feel and hear people coming from behind - though it is just stereo ;-)
for anyone who wants a really good headset for fairly cheap price, they should look at the skull candy plyr 1 headset. skull candy bought astro a couple of years back and the plyr 1 uses the same drivers as the A50 but for about half the cost. the sound quality is on par with the A50s and the voice chat is clear on the receiving end. it has a mix amp built into the headset as well. been using them for a couple of months now and been loving them.
HotBokChoi I know I'm 4 years late, but I couldn't agree with you more! I'm no audiophile and don't claim to be. However, I have tried *several* "gaming headsets" and my skullcandy plyr 1 still sits at the top of my list. I've tried 5 different sets of cans in the last 6months looking for something that tops the plyr 1s. Nothing came close except my newest buy (Astro A40 TR + Mixamp Pro). I still swap em' out for the skullcandys every now n then. I take care of my things to the extreme, if I'm not mistaken, I bought the plyr 1s around 4-5yrs ago. The only thing that broke is the headband in the middle, only cracked though (thanks to my nephew) I took some electrical tape to it and you can't even tell unless you're holding them in front of your face. The headset stand that doubles as the transmitter is still in perfect condition. There's only 3 eq settings but imo they're damn good. Battery life on them is STILL good. The surround sound quality is perfect to me, I soundwhore all day long with em'. They've served me well well over the years and they're still kickin'. I've looked into buying another pair but they're pretty rare, I've found a few pairs but I decided to try out the TR A40s & Mixamp and ended up falling for em'. Sooooo comfortable. Either way, if you can't justify the price tag on the Astro's but found the plyr 1s. Definitely snatch up the plyr 1. If you see this, thanks for reading this far, have a good day and happy new year!
I have a pair of old a30s that iv had since they first came out , now I have the new a 50s . Love em
Thinking of getting A40's, nice review
Nice video bro! Scuf info saved my ass
Do A40's mess up your network connection? Every pair of wireless headsets i owned kicked me offline or lagged me offline and things such as that? Thanks for the help im thinking of buying some
No. No headset had ANY influence at all on your network. Like seriously, nothing you do headset wise will affect your network in any way.
Drift0r what if you threw your Astros at your router?
Drift0r I had a pair of Turtle beach X41's that interfered with my Wifi connection, or were you just talking about the Astro A40's?
Gregson Gaming that is the exact headset that interfered with my wifi and i also had a pair of Razors that did the same thing. When I plugged in my regular TurtleBeach x12's there was no trouble Drift0r
The A40's aren't wireless anyway. If your wireless controller doesn't mess up your network then these won't have any more of an affect. The a A50's are wireless.
Driftor, thank you for the transparency.
Thank you, your review M80 is what i was looking for. =)
I got the camo version. they have improved my gaming tremendously especially fps games.
Totally off topic, but what is your wedding band made of and how do you like it? I was looking for TI6AL, but most things appear to be commercially pure, which i think i'd scratch too much. Now I'm leaning more toward 316lvm. Any thoughts?
I'm confused as to why Astro didn't just use the mix amp like the 360 version, but just bundle in their own version of the adapter since theirs clearly works. I used me TB's with full surround support and just use and adapter on the xbox one. Hasn't given me any issues. You need directional sound in Cod.
Good Video Driftor. I have one question on the astro mixamp pro, does it makes any stereo headset surround sound by emulation? For example if I plugged in my Sony Xb400 will it have surround sound?
When it comes to the M80 mixamp for the xbox one, can I still plug it into my old 2013 mixamp? I'd like to be able to hear things on my pc but also have a way to talk to people through xbox party chat at the same time without having to use a basic headset.
I honestly have not tried this. I do know that Xbox One is a huge pain when it comes to mixed audio inputs or outputs.
Make sure to mention the insanely fast reload cancel time of the IMR tomorrow. It's a life saver
Can't wait for that A50 video
quick question, since xbox one controllers now have a headphone jack can you use the ps4 a40s for the xbox 1 now? I have the very first a40s that released but they have a short in the left side so I'm thinking of upgrading but I'm not feeling the m80 mix amp. it's probably me being picky but I loved the actual mix amp part of the astros.
Can you do a review for the a40 Tr mixamp pro for and the vs the a40 tr mixamp m80 for Xbox one. I’m debating what to get or can you tell me which is better. I currently have turtle beach 420x stealths but I want to upgrade.
I'm thinking about getting a set over the holidays, but I see a lot of people in reviews talking about iffy QC and Comcast-tier customer "service". Do you have any thoughts on this, Drift? It's a lot of money to take a gamble on.
For example, if I was on Skype via computer and playing a game on my Xbox One, would I need to purchase both the Astro a40 headset as well as the Mixamp pro in order to run sounds from 2 different devices into the same headset at the same time?
If you have the Mixamp, (sold with or without the headset) then you can hook up a console and PC at the same time.
Have they changed anything yet so that 4 paddle Scuf controllers will work with the M80 or do you need to just go with the brick mix amp & have wires along the floor?
so i bought the a40s with the m80 mix amp for xb1. i can hear audio from people and in game. i can also make phone calls using the other cord in the box, and listen to music. i cannot however talk. for some reason it doesn't pick up my voice when i'm taking into the headset. i've updated the controller, and i honestly have no idea why i can't talk. if ANYONE knows, please let me know.
brandon cordner M80 > Trash
So all you need is a wire and you can use any of the Astros that are meant for the xbox with the ps4
so what would you guys personally recommend? the new m80 or the mixamp pro's? the surround sound is kinda a let down so im thinking of just grabbing the pro's. but the m80's seem more convenient and i can probably move around more freely depending on where i am.
If I get the A40 xbox one edition and decide that later I want to use the Mixamp pro would I have to get a whole new headset? And do these work with capture cards such as my elgato?
They work with mixamp pro
X1 KILLA yes they work with mixamp pro!
Adam Coonan I know I was telling the other guy but these don't get 7.1 DSS through the chat puck astro made for x1. The turtle beach xo sevens do. If you use the regular chat puck with mixamp pro you need like 10 wires lol. Think I'll just stick with my sevens. I use ear force deltas on ps4 was looking for a upgrade for both but this isn't it.
Awesome dude! I was really interested in getting an astro headset for my xbone but I've heard so many bad things about headsets already. Glad to know these will work! Also, did you ever pick a winner for the scuff controller? :)
can you use those grey and blue a40's with the mix amp pro to get proper 7.1 surround or do you need the other a40 headset that comes with the mix amp pro? pleas help this question might sound stupid and maybe it is but I just want to make sure because I like the idea of the m80 mix amp with the headset and the mix amp pro.
Hi great video! I have a quick question if I buy the A40's online in the bundle with the mix amp pro will it work for Xbox one and how do you set that up thanks. Sorry if this question was already asked 😄
For anyone that likes bass, this is not the headset for you. This headset sounds more of a competitive gaming one from my experience with the 2013 A40s. It's more about hearing the things around you, like footsteps. It's not for listening to music or media as much. But of course, it is a gaming headset. The different audio modes do not differ too much, besides competitive and media.
Question. If I purchased a mix amp pro would it be possible to 1) make this headset breach the console gap 360/Xbox one? 2) support surround sound for both consoles.
Thank you.
For the Mixamp m80, can the entire headset play audio of my pc? That's how I usually game.
Hey, I've been wondering I'm not to sure how the sponsoring process works, for example how would I go about getting sponsored by scuf gaming, or astro gaming, or even monster?
Does the microphone work with the xbox one? I know you said it does for Ps4. But my current headset's microphone only works on ps4. I want to make sure I buy a headset where everything is compatible with both systems.
Is there no way to hook up S/PDIF to the Astros? That's what i use for my Turtle Beaches and I don't have to pull any game volume through the controller, only voice chat. Even if you can't I still think Astros are probably a nicer heaset, would like a pair when my x40s die.
It took a bit of tweaking, but I got the mixamp pro to work perfectly with my headset adapter, giving me full game and voice control with working chat.
Which do you think it's best to buy? This or the Turtle Beach Stealth 700. (Those are going to come out 24th September) I've a PS4. Thanks.
For the a40s do you need game sound coming from your TV/monitor or does it all come through the headset?
Drift0r thanks for helping me decide which headset to get for my xbox one because i cant afford the tr edition and this just sounds like the next best thing so thanks :D
Do the new xbox one controllers just work like the PS4 controller in terms of just needing the 3.5mm jack rather than the M80?
I could see buying these for my Xbone, but the Sony wireless gold headset I have for my ps4 is great. While the sound quality may not be quite up to par with these, they're less than half the cost and still damn good.
To get surround sound on xbox one, just use the mixamp pro as this will able you to use the dolby digital surround sound in the settings of the xbox, then for chat use the chat adapter as this will then go from the controller into the mic input on the mixamp pro. This is the same way as working on the 360 it just needs the official microsoft chat adapter for it to work properly.
Thanks for your honest review. I will be planing on purchasing Astro a40 headset. Turtle beach were good but the PS4 turtle beach just keep breaking. I notice it's cheap plastic. I'm thinking on going to Astro a40 because I'm hardcore gamer. I play games for hours. Again thank you for the honest review.
What's the sound quality on PS4 without the mixamp? Stereo? Or can you force DSS through the PS4 menus like on XB1
Great reviews!!
Hello Drift0r!
I would need some help from you. I am an xbox one user and planning to buy an a40 in a few days. What is the solution to use mixamp pro and also the adapter? The mix amp pro holds the possibility to plug in mp3 and stream also which I would need.
Thx for your help in advance.
I have a question... This headset isn't surround with xbox one. But if I plug it to the little black and orange box (i forgot its name) with a optical cable, it support surround?
Hey, I have the M80 and I just ordered the MixAmp Pro. Can I use my A40s with the MixAmp Pro and use the M80 as the chat adapter rather than using the Microsoft proprietor adapter?
Without a mix amp is it possible for the cable that goes straight from the headset to your controller can you plug that in to your headphone jack in your computer and be able to use your mic/headset?
I have both consoles, I use my ps4 more though. I would like to get the mix amp pro but it seems waaaaaaaaay too complicated to set up, when the m80 is a quick plug in. You can only mess with the settings through a certain extent on the ps menu but it only does so much. I cannot stand that buzzing noise with headphones. so here comes the question that has taken me so goddamn long to get to. Is the mixamp pro an easy setup for xbox one and ps4 or is it a much harder process to get it working with xbox one? plus are all the wires provided to work with both consoles? ive also read about the buzzing and overall lower sound quality on the a50s.
Now that the XBOX ONE controller has been updated to take the Jack, does it still need the adapter with the new controllers?
So if I buy the mix amp pro would I get DD surround sound on my Xbox one? Or would I still be screwed with stereo sound? Also if it did work would I still be able to use my mic or do I need to use the actual Xbox mic?
Is it possible to have a splitter from the headset to the m80 mixamp, and another cable to a computer?
Yes and no...it gets messy..if I figure how I did it...il repost...I know I had to plug a 3rd wire
hey drift0r, do you know if I can send the M80 to my mixamp pro so I can get surround sound? I use surround now and could not live without. I love knowing where the threat is coming from.
I may be jumping the gun because I have not finished the video yet but, Will the M80 work with the older Astro A50s??
I was really hoping for a good in depth review of the a40 headset. Positives and negatives..... As in, are these as good as the turtle beach x11's I loved with my 360. The Turtle Beach xo sevens get decent reviews and so do these a40's. Which is better? Are the a40's worth $40 dollars more? Or is it the sennheiser g4me zeros... Or the Astro A50's? I'm confused. Love your videos, I was just hoping for a definitive recommendation. Anyone have comments or suggestions or recommendations I would appreciate it?
What headsets do you recommend for getting good surround sound on XBox One? Currently, I'm using my old Trittons 5.1.
Since the paddles are placed in a different way on the Xbox One Elite Controller, will the mixamp fit on the Elite controller?
Do you have to buy the mixamp for the pc (the big bulky one) separately?
So what astro would you recommend for xbone , PS4 and pc? and what would you have to buy to make it work on all three if anything needed please help :)
So the A40 Halo 5 edition headset... it's stereo only right with the M80? However instead can it be connected to the MixAmp Pro? If so, that then makes it 7.1 like the A50's??
I brought them and the MixAmp Pro after doing some more research and found the answer. The M80 or plugging the headset into the Xbox "stereo" adapter or even directly into the new Xbox controllers (or PS4) will output in stereo.
For A40's, you'll need the MixAmp Pro to get a virtual surround sound, Dolby and other effects. It's truly next level and such a great experience for gaming. Can't recommend enough buddy :)
The A50's essentially have the MixAmp built in but you sacrifice wires & infinite power supply for a battery that needs charging. If you can manage wires (I use cable ties and run it under a rug) then go for the A40's + MixAmp Pro. Life savers in Titanfall as you can clearly hear footsteps. Found enemies camping & hiding behind walls on Halo etc etc because of the A40's.
Hope that helps.
I've asked everyone, can you use the mixamp pro on the Xbox one Gen 2 headset instead of the m80 mixamp? Please I wanna buy the mixamp pro, I need some help.
Legion Kings yes, just buy
Don't I also need the inline mute cable?
so is this just that same as the standard a40s? but this comes with the xbox one chat adapter rather than the mix amp? will this gen 2 headset function the same as the gen 1 if i got a mix amp?
I bought a pair of A40s in December 2012, was not impressed for the amount of money they go for. The mic connector had problems 6 months in, it would crackle and the voice would cut off as I spoke. Luckily I bought the 2 year warranty from Best Buy. I just returned them today and got my money back, $269.37 which I'll use towards a laptop or PS4.
Have you done a review on the Astro A50 gen 2. I have both of the Ps4 and Xb1 and looking to buy a headset. I am looking at the Astro A50 gen 2 or Astro A40 gen 2 and not such which one to go with. Can you tell me which one you think is better and the difference between both of them.
There is no difference with sound quality. The a50s are wireless and the a40s are Wired. I recomend a50s if playing in a living room and a40 if you are within 2 meters of your TV/Monitor
Is there any difference between the gen 1 and 2 astros and mixamps. Also can I buy the m80s by themselves?
also that "standard port and cable" is called aux 3.5 mm or minijack
I have an Astro A40 headset and i can never get 7.1 surround sound in it, the mixamp pro will allow me to get 7.1 out of my pc correct, via optical correct? i have the cable hook up with the red light in my pc's sound card. or 6 analog jacks
Can you show how to set it up properly with the PS4 and HD60? I'm having some issues
That is kind of hard because the PS4 defaults the no volume through HDMI when ANY headset it plugged in. The best I can do is run optical into the mixamp and disable the microphone. Doing this I get game sound to the headsets but can't chat with anyone.
That's what I tried doing, I even contacted Elgato themselves and they had 0 answers. Is there any device or headset I can use to get everything working at 60FPS?
Delvige He said the mix amp is the best solution he's found
Delvige use a mic such as a blue snowball with no output of audio. This is so the people on ps4 can pick up your chat. Then their chat will run through the elgato hdmi. Then you put the usb from astro mix amp into pc. Then you can use the commentary feature to record your voice from the astros.
The MixAmp Pro has a stream port on the back. If you connect a 3.5mm cable from the stream port to the 3.5mm audio jack on the HD60. Then all game and voice audio will be output to the HD60.
Does the mixamp m80 give any sort of surround sound or is that only with the mixamp pro
Does the m80 mixamp deliver 7.1?
Nope.
***** its stereo from what im hearing
+Luke TheNotable (Halo Tips and Guides) xbox logic
+Luke TheNotable (Halo Tips and Guides) I am pretty sure they do
+Kia Afzali
no.
Tritton 720+ or this?
(My Trittons recently broke so I was thinking of buying another or get the A40's)
I'm very confused. I heard these new astro a40s with the m80 are wireless besides the cord to the controller. Now you are saying you can use the mix amp pro with this headset on any system, does this mean the headset becomes wired? Someone plz help me
updated firmware? Does that need to be applied to all controllers, or is it just for first released ones?
will the M80 work with an older pair of A40's? i got mine like 5-6 years ago...
all the astro a40 mixamp editions say made for ps4..dose that mean i can only use them for ps4 or are they made for xbox one aswell or are they infact only for ps4??
Hey Drift0r or anyone, I currently have an astro a40. I love them dearly. They were great on xbox 360 and well you can probably imagine how they are on xbox one. Can't seem to get them to work on xbox one. Yes I've done all the precautions. Your opinion, should I buy the new a40 w/ m80 or just keep grinding with these. Help please!
Did you end your sponsorship with Elgato and pick up an Astro sponsorship? Is there any benefit to that for you? Just curious.
If I plug the 3.5mm jack directly into the PS4 controller, will it be stereo or surround?
Is the voice button for people in your party or your vice in your headset over the game
I have the "old" astro a40's 2013 ed w the mixamp pro. Is there any difference between the new once and the old once?
No. The "new" is a facelift model.
No, it just looks new.
So the amp he reviewed makes it to where we don't need the bigger astro amp? If so then I think astro made a good decision!
I know i this might seem like a stupid uestion but what exactly is surround sound and how will it effect the way the sound is heard
***** Thanks bro
Which headset would you recommend for best quality this new headset or the old one?
Are there any differences between the MixAmp Pro and the Gen 1 MixAmp Pro?
Thank you, great video. I have this headset, they are my first pair of astro headsets.
Same here brother
So since i have both ps4 and xbox 1 would a single pair of a40s work for both systems getting the needed attachments?
