      Great to hear! I'm sure this is very simplified compared to what you're doing in structural geology, but the principles are sound! Thanks for watching!

    I followed it, and I've never done this kind of thing before. Great explaining!

    I'm so glad I came across this video! Would you be able to go over how to set up the cross-section template to avoid vertical exaggeration?

    I am just surprised about the angle you projected in the section. Why do you not use the apparent dip of the bed associated with the section line? Why do you use the true dip?

    Could you explain how to draw a geologic cross section when the strike is not parallel to the contact?

    Wouldn't you want to calculate the true dip or apparent dip for this?

    If you don't have dip and strike already from the geological map, but you need to include it in the cross section, how can you calculate it?

    Geology is a really interesting subject to me, but being a corporate airplane pilot, I didn’t receive any geologic education growing up. Can you recommend any decent text books for learning basic geology?

    I'm currently taking this unit on Structural geology....my question is how do I find the dipping angle of the fault so as to reflect it on my geologic cross-section. The map I'm using has not indicated any dip figures

    • @GeoKnowLearning
      @GeoKnowLearning  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry if this is too late...if the dip is not indicated you might have to do your best estimate based on the fault type (normal and reverse faults typically have different angles). That being said, when in doubt, ask your instructor in case they want you to do it a certain way.

    • @geoninja3094
      @geoninja3094 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      of you have field data measurement in regards to the fault attitude, you can imply the data onto the cross section, if you don't, try to infer the data from topographic contour vy the notion: the dip of fault structure can be reflected by topographic feature by calculating the slope ajgle of close spacing contour along the fault trace

    what's importance of doing cross section?

    • @GeoKnowLearning
      @GeoKnowLearning  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cross sections can reveal what is going on beneath the surface of the earth, in this case, from data that we collect on the surface. In that way it is kind of like an xray into the earth! It is also very helpful in exploration geology (oil and mining) so you know where the best place to target.

    This is a great video and explains how to do a cross section fairly well, but it could have been half the length if the narrator stuck to talking about the map instead of adding unnecessary commentary about things he didn't do, lack of info on the map etc. It could definitely use some editing.

    We have to keep track of which things you did and didn't take into account?
    How about you just wait and make a video in which *everything* is taken into account?
    I'm not understanding how you're getting these angles, like the first one, you don't show at all how you got 82 degrees, I don't see any polka dot units in the key, just solid colors and striped colors, I can barely see where ever you're pointing to with your cursor, I'm have no clue how at 9:34 you decide on where to cut that line off; you did a really poor job of explaining this.
    Very, very frustrating. I didn't learn anything.
