Why is Everyone Moving to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina?

  • The Dirty Myrtle is the fastest growing metro areas in the United States. The crime rates are really high though, and there aren't that many high paying jobs, so the question is, why are the people moving here, and how long will this last?

I lived in Charleston SC from mid 1970s to mid 2000s and as usual you really captured very well the beach area and a great deal of the regional vibe. There are definitely areas of beauty here but they can be found in more abundance in less over the top commercial areas. I continue to be amazed how quickly you evaluate and illustrate an area you are not from. Great ending drone shot!

Chris, while you’re out East, you really need to take the highway that crosses over the Chesapeake bay! On our honeymoon, my wife and I were traveling from NJ back to Florida and that’s how we went. This road seems to disappear right into the water, it’s really quite the ride…
Coming from the north, we wound up going through a very rural part of North Carolina! That’s where I first sampled a “Carolina slaw dog” Mow they’re a favorite!

@@jrhaven it is. When it looks like the road is about to end in the middle of the Chesapeake bay, that’s when you enter a tunnel. If you are heading south, when you get to NC, that’s where I got an education regarding NC culture. There was this old road side stand and the lady asked me if I ever had a North Carolina “slaw dog”. I said I never heard of such a thing. I said it sounded really strange. She said you eat sauerkraut don’t you? Then she said isn’t sauerkraut made from cabbage? Well, I was trapped into trying a slaw dog. Without that little excursion, I would never have experienced the real North Carolina …proving why it’s good to get off the freeway once in awhile.

You know what's weird about the residential area? The fact that the houses don't necessarily look like beach/tropical houses. They almost look like something you would see up north. I live in northern Illinois and a lot of the houses right off the ocean look exactly like some of the nice houses here. Definitely not something I'd think would be in South Carolina

Myrtle beach isn’t bad if your used to the city life . A lot of people who aren’t residents come and act like they don’t have home training. The only problem I’ve had with MB is the agents who try to sell you various properties and they can get very aggressive. Although I’m disheartened at the reports of crime, I still love visiting. Matter of fact, I personally call MB “The Big Play” because it’s like a playground to me. This video is still very helpful, though, because I realize as an out-of-towner, I still have to watch my back. Compared to where I live (Durham, NC), MB is paradise. Keep up the good work, dude!

I was born in Myrtle Beach in 1983. I lived there until this past November when I moved to Arizona. It is usually not very busy in January. Yes, there are a ton of hill jacks there. There’s also a ton of “damn Yankees.” Jobs sucked there, but I loved my home, loved the natural beauty… hated most of the people. Do I miss it? I miss my swamps with live oaks and Spanish moss… but I’m happy in Arizona. Oh, and the H is silent in Horry County 😉

Myrtle Beach reminds me of Daytona Beach,it has it's sketchy areas but it also has nicer beaches bordering it as in the case of Daytona Beach with Ormond Beach to the north and New Syrma Beach to the south.Housing prices in Daytona Beach are similiar to Myrtle Beach which is actually on the lowside for a beach town.Hopefully, you can do a video on Daytona Beach someday, this is probably the most similiar Florida beach to Myrtle Beach.

The thing is U got to know as a tourist the BEST TIMES to vacation down in MB. If U doing it in late spring thru July early August well there U go that's the big heavy tourist times. Late August before labor day is typically when my family in the past has gone to visit MB. Still people down there but since the brats down in Horry County go back to school in mid August it is PERFECT vacation time for out of towners. Just my take on my beloved favorite east coast vacay spot!!

I have a place on the water in Myrtle Beach. You drove past it. I am snowbird. During the summer "season" the population explodes. All the tall buildings you went by during January are empty for the most part. About the crime. If you look at the crime per month, you will see as it should, crime increases when the tourist show up during the season. 19 million people will increase the crime rate. That would mean that the crime is being committed mostly to or by the tourist. I don't think the local "thugs" are waiting around for their crime season? Vacation plus alcohol can only equal a higher crime rate. It's a numbers game. The police force has the same amount of officers all year long. I assume without any proof that overtime is a priority during "the season". Myrtle beach has two separate bike weeks, cars show week, conventions, a bowl game at Coastal Carolina University and many more big draws all season long.
I purchased there because it's was affordable. One day drive from the northeast and I can be at a beach with palm trees that didn't break the bank. Duh! It is growing because people are retiring and moving south. The running joke in the northeast is "you move south when you retire because it's the law". The numbers you list proved that.
Another issue that you touched on is a really big deal! You said that some of the places are listed as AirBnB's. What is important to know is that most of the large buildings are condo's. However those condo's are also hotels. They are known as Condotels. I own a unit, and if I decide I want to rent it, that's my decision. Some people don't rent them at all and some people live there all year round. Each of these buildings has a front desk. And it is run as a hotel. You as a guest probably never know that the hotel doesn't own the room or unit. I pay common charges and have a HOA that includes the normal things that all condo's have. That means I can rent it and gain good frickin income during the season or all year long. It's a rental, or it's a condo. My choice. The hotel takes care of everything as a normal hotel would and takes it's cut of the rent. If I choose to not use the hotels front desk and rent on AirBnB, it's my decision. I have access to all amenities and can block the room for my own use anytime for any length. Of course if the room(unit) is occupied, arrangements are made if possible. As a matter of fact, there are many companies that will act as a full service broker to get my unit rented and they take care of all the cleaning and repairs if needed for a lesser cut than the hotel if I choose not to use the hotels front desk as my broker for guests. Big business in Myrtle Beach. It's up to me as a homeowner to decide. BTW most of those buildings are not your typical hotel rooms. They are condo's. Full kitchen including a dishwasher along with washer/dryer. There are some condo's that were converted to Condotels and still look like your classic hotel room, but for the bulk of what was shown on the video on the beach side, the units are anywhere from a efficiency with 2 beds to 4 bedroom 3 bath with balconies in most of the bedrooms as well as the living room. I decide how to furnish if I don't want the hotel furniture and upgrade as I see fit.
The local people I have met are wonderful. Yes some are cranky but it's the majority are great. When you are walking in the morning and you pass someone, 90% of the time we greet each other. If you are nice, you get nice back. Your comments about no major highway is correct. However it is not necessary. If it was, a spur would have been built. I take Rt17 which is 2 lanes each way with very few traffic lights and 60mph speed limits till you get to I-140. Myrtle Beach is a stone's throw from the N. Carolina border. Once there, it's interstate back to the northeast. More direct routes to the main interstate (I-95) are 2 lane roads that are usually empty.
You touched ever so lightly about golf. Myrtle Beach is known as the golf capital of the United States. If you golf you know Myrtle Beach. It is a huge reason for the why home values have "on average" increased. Golf is to Myrtle Beach like Disney is to Orlando. Golf is not a poor man's game. You can buy a really nice place in Myrtle Beach and have over 350 courses at your doorstep.
Lastly, numbers tell you all you need to know. The population is increasing and so are the property values. I lived in S. Florida during the 70's and 80's and saw the same migration. Same playbook. Was affordable and people moved down to the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area as my parents did. Then the money came in because it was on the beach and the weather was nice. Now values are out of this world. Hoping the values continue to raise as they did in S. Florida. I would take the "crime" issue in Myrtle Beach over South Florida any day. You don't hear on the internet " A Myrtle Beach man" but you hear it about Florida.

Uncle Sam US Army took me to Myrtle Beach or at least the general area. That was so many years ago but it was nice it was clean people are friendly. I swam out to the shipping lanes without knowing it and they have sharks out there that I found out. Did you know that the great white swims as far north as New England area? Banned from working might call the upper Midwest, I thought that sharks were over played in the movie Jaws. Turns out yes they were overplayed but not near as much as I was thinking. So now you have the polluting landsharks driving their mobility carts around Walmart as well. Working way up going to college the world had changed as much as maybe where you would come from and others have done the same. It would be nice. Side note about mountain dew. Stop drinking that stuff years ago. So did my cousin but not until after he developed a hole in his heart because of drinking so much of it. Please call Myrtle Beach something related to turtle. I'll leave that to the imagination.

Myrtle Beach is an unique area no doubt. I've lived here in the Murrells Inlet area for over 20 years and have enjoyed it for the most part. I am a professional tradesman and that is the key to survival around here. There are a lot of independent contractors and small businesses that supplement the economy alongside the aforementioned Walmart and education facilities. Crime has never been an issue for myself but I'm far from within the city limits. I've always considered the MB area to be the golf course capital of the world, the title is waning these days but I recall them being located everywhere as far as the eye could see many years ago. And lastly, Dirty Myrtle is not the only moniker the area has picked up over the years, she is more affectionately known as "the Redneck Riviera" to those who wander in from Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and the likes.

OK Chris Harden...you want to talk about a rough city and how bad things are compared to Myrtle Beach...try spending a week in Midtown NYC or some of the neighborhoods of the outer boroughs..the only thing they're not charging for in New York City or New York State is the air... and they're trying to figure out a way to do that..and as far has job opportunities...the 21st Century model is that people can work and network remotely...very small minded individuals can't see opportunities in a place where winter is banished for a good art of the year...so you might want to rethink your abusive comments about the greater Myrtle Beach area...it might not be everyone's destination, but neither is Death Valley California, Camden New Jersey or Midtown NYC with its son to be imposed Congestion Pricing and Lots of Illegal Migrants....Happy Trails to You

Why? If you been to Virginia and West Virginia it's easy to see that there's a world of difference between the two. That's state with broken up because of the civil War and the difference in the police on slavery and other Southern attitude that the time. Carolina is just go back to differences between who settled them. Who knows about North and South Dakota although I move closer to them that I do anything else I mentioned so far. We should divorce New York City from New York State like Washington DC is without. St.Louis is in Missouri but it divorce itself over a hundred years ago in St Louis county. Or about 80% of that time it's been trying to reunite with the county. But the county knows that they don't want that ball and chain. New York City. How about divorcing California from the whole country? They can take Nevada with them. Oh well it all fits in route as well as combining the states.
