It's beautiful how Bill's life got better after the world ended. He was able to be himself, find love, and live a fulfilling life. I don't think I have ever seen that in a show about the post-apocalypse.

Yeah it’s sad to think if the apocalypse didn’t happen he probably wouldn’t have allowed himself to truly be who he is.

In the game, Bill gets the "bad" ending where Frank breaks up with him and leaves Bill. Joel and Bill discover that Frank hung himself after getting bitten. Bill's stubborness and bitterness cost him his partner and his happiness, and Joel silenty vows to help Ellie because he does not want to end up like Bill.
In the show, Joel and Ellie stumble upon Bill and Frank peacefully gone in their house, surrounded by each other. They had a life full of love and happiness. In the apocalypse, Bill and Frank had room for a garden. Joel silently vows to help Ellie so that he can live out his life and end up like Bill.

"I think Bill kept himself isolated because of his sexuality."
Exactly what I thought too. Survivalist. Self-sufficient. Distrustful. Scared. Isolated. To me, as a gay man, I related to the self-protection. I'm not a prepper/survivalist, but I get the appeal. To protect yourself from an apocolypitc world aligns with protecting yourself from the world now. A "leave me alone" mentality will lend to an isolated life. When they sat down to eat, you could see his protective exterior fade a bit, and I thought, "He's protecting himself." Suddenly he came across as a sweet guy who didn't trust people to treat him well. So he pulled away, and when the world collapses, he probably feels the safest he's ever felt.

In the game, it is implied that Bill and Frank were once lovers but now they hate each other. Joel and Ellie have an entire mission with Bill. (Ellie and Bill don't really get along) We later find Frank's corpse after he hung himself because he got infected.

28:13, I've been married over half my life to the same woman. As rosy as love and marriage is this the price you pay - sooner or later one of you will have to pass before the other. It sucks but that is life.
But it's all of the good times between now and then that make it well worth it. So I totally understand why Bill made the decision to go too. As my wife and I watched this episode I said "I would rather go before you".

In the game, Bill and Frank's relationship is really more implied than shown. They find Frank hung himself, and if you explore the house, you find a letter that explains a little more. Aside from that, there is nothing like this episode in the game. I'm so glad they told Bill and Frank's full story in the show.

41:35 I love how this show did this. Because, like other comments said, the game didn’t give them a happy ending, or nearly as full a story. So that moment, when they were fighting, I was like “oh shoot, is this where they split??” but then you find out it’s just a silly couple’s argument about paint, and you realize they might not end their story the way you thought.
The show writers have done this a few times-where they sort of use the game knowledge against those who have played it to surprise you- and I love it.
Like, the first episode so this at key “jump scares” in the game, to keep the audiences anticipation-the dog scratches at the back window the same moment an infected neighbor would have slammed against it in the game… or in their truck, a set of headlights flash as they almost T them in an intersection before slamming on the brakes (which is the accident that would have wrecked their car in the game instead of the plane crash)….
It’s clever, and makes it so the game players still feel the narrative tension the original story builds, while not truly deviating from that story’s direction.
But anyways. That’s just me ranting. I really loved seeing your reaction to this episode-it felt very genuine and insightful, and I hope to see more! :)

Lovely reaction as always! :) This is a comment i left on another channel but to answer your question if any of that is in the game: Bill and Frank were characters in the game, yes, but the show deviates from the story told in the game in major ways. First, Bill is the only one you interact with because in the game Frank is already dead when the story starts. As in the show, you do get to know early on from chats between Tess and Joel that Bill is their source for the stuff they smuggle.
You learn of Frank shortly after Tess dies through a note found on a subway station, but the connection between Bill and Frank is unknown at that point. It is only after you get to Bill’s Town (where Bill and Ellie meet in a not-so friendly way) that Bill let us know that he had a “partner” once. In the game, Bill is very much the closed off paranoid curmudgeon that we see early on the HBO show and we go to him so he can get us a truck too.
In a central scene, Bill delivers Joel a speech about how it is best to be alone and without emotional attachments in a world like the one they live now, otherwise you die, and suggests Joel to get rid of Ellie. After escaping some infected together, Bill, Joel and Ellie, end up in Frank’s house and discover Frank’s cadaver hanging from the ceiling. He killed himself in order to not turn after being bitten. This is a shock for Bill and he reveals there that Frank was his partner, but you get a sense that, even tho Bill is visibly affected by Frank’s death, their relationship grew toxic over the years through the way Bill talks about Frank and because of a suicide note that Frank left to Bill. Basically, Frank wrote to Bill that he hated his guts.
It is interesting how the show takes the opposite direction to tell the story of Frank and Bill, but the amazing thing is that both versions (the game and the show) serve the same purpose for Joel’s arch and his relationship with Ellie. And this is where I will stop myself but you are probably already getting a sense of Joel’s inner journey after the note that Bill left him in the HBO show version. 😉

Okay so I adore both games. I have played both of them SOOO many times all the way through. What I loved about the first two episodes were how true they were to the source material. What I loved about this episode was how different it was. This WILDLY deviates from the game, and we do miss out on some fun interaction between Bill and Ellie, but I think it was absolutely worth it.
This was one of the most breathtakingly beautiful pieces of cinema that I have experienced in quite some time. To see someone who is the traditional stereotypical definition of like a "Man's man" like Nick Offerman being so tender and vulnerable was an absolute treat. Like he's a big burly masculine gruff dude, but you saw just how nervous he was and it was absolutely perfect! It was soooo believable! I just...I could go on about this episode alone for hours. They HAVE to win some awards for this.

You were both about as wary as me during the start of this episode! I kept thinking this would be your classic Walking Dead scenario. I did yell KISS! semi-jokingly to my partner while we were watching the dinner scene because I felt like I was picking up a vibe, but inside I was still just waiting for the betrayal reveal. It's like the writers knew what zombie fans (and generally anxious people) would be thinking and knew to subvert all the old tropes.

This is very loosely based on context from the game, but the ark of this episode (emotional elation followed by a similar conclusion) seems so similar to that of an older movie titled It’s My Party that I’d be surprised if it wasn’t an influence.
This episode beautifully expands on the tiny bits of story you get in the game in ways that the game probably couldn’t, but the game can also build a world in ways that don’t translate to TV/Movies. In the game the world is established as a living place beyond Joel by events that can and do transpire even when you are not present to see them. In the scene where Frank is found he left a note that you may not find or may not read. You can optionally take it to Bill to see his reaction. If you stick around after telling Bill he crumbles the letter up. They are little things, but they are assembled in a moving way even in the game.

I'd like to add some real-world historical context for this story: the AIDS epidemic. Everyone (in the gay urban world) was dying or feared they were infected. In 1985, a test came along. Then, with the cocktail in 1997?, the deaths started to slow down. By 1998, the BAR (SF gay paper) headlined: No Obits. Nobody had died that week after years of a weekly rag, thick with obituaries, brought grim sadness.
So, a lot of gay men who thought they were going to die (in the epidemic) somehow made it through. They got to have lives they never expected to. And...they started dying of "normal" things, like what Frank had. It was such a shock for me as my friends and members of my communities started dying of heart attacks, and cancer, and other things. It was one sign (and now a reminder) that the epidemic did end or was going to end.
    More tears for some viewers.

I've seen people calling it tragic or sad, but I think it was a happy story. They got to pass in old age, after a long life where they were loved, with agency and dignity. This is something neither queer nor disabled/terminal characters are usually granted in media.
The apocalypse happened in 2003. That is the societal framework they are coming from. One where gay marriage wasn't legal. One where initial meetings were often conducted through coding because being too open, too out, was dangerous. Especially in a small town. Bill probably had more genuine social interaction after the outbreak than beforehand. Because of small town stigma and pre 2003 socially acceptable homophobia. From this perspective the apocalypse gave them a chance at life they may not have gotten otherwise. Bill likely never would have known love. Frank brought beauty to Bill's life. As I have seen others say, Bill and Frank won the apocalypse.
And Bill and Joel became friends. Even if they didn't want to call it that. Mutual repect. Mutual trust. Mutual care for the other. And Joel had the code. Watching Bill's arc was a great way to externalise Joel's internal arc, they are so similar.
The show story is exploring how love and relationships can be toxic. And this was a beautiful juxtaposition to that.
Functionally it didn't change a lot from the game story. Bill and Frank existed. Joel and Ellie got resources. Joel and Ellie still broke down some walls. But, story wise it did add things for the show. A lot of what was cut there will be plenty more of in the show. And game players get to experience something new.
In the context of queer representation in media, including the "kill your gays" trope, I really appreciated this change. And the lack of bodies was really respectful of the story being told - it wasn't a story about their death. It was a story about their life and love.
Sometimes in apocalypse stories you can end up in a place wondering if the world is worth saving. The love story topped off with sprinkling of Ellie's delight at the world and Joel's ability to find purpose and drive again showed that there may be something to fight for.

It's all about Surviving vs Living. In the game Frank ends up leaving to see the world because he's too extroverted, gets infected, and hangs himself before turning. So Bill is a lot more bitter about the one person he trusted leaving him.
Either way Bill serves to show Joel the difference between surviving, and living. Bill is a survival expert, but what does he know about living until he opens up? In the game he shows Joel how bad he can become if he doesn't trust people or open up, in the show he shows Joel how good it can become and what he could've had with Tess. So either way Joel starts to open up.
That's the major theme in the Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.

Although Bill and Frank's story in the game is short and there are plenty of laughs during that chapter, I don't it was superficial. In the game Bill was like a cautionary tale to Joel, telling him not to get too close to Ellie because nothing good will come out of it and he'll end up dead. In the game Bill doesn't come to the realisation that love exists in that post apocalyptic world

    • @lynetteoliva1256

I thought it was mainly Bill that was the comedic part of the game because of his interactions w/Ellie & how crazy he seemed. I don't really remember Frank other than how he died & that they were partners in the romantic sense. Although, my experience w/the game is limited to watching some play thru & all the cut scenes. Never played it myself because it would give me motion sickness, that is why I said some play thru.

Hey girls! Other than Bill & Frank being partners, Bill setting up all kinds of booby traps around their little town & Frank taking his own life, the rest of this episode is not in the game from what I remember while watching it being played. In the game Frank & Bill have a fight, Frank gets infected while on his own & then kills himself leaving Bill a note. This episode of the series went a more romantic, but still tragic route. I loved this episode. U asked if I cried watching this episode. R u kidding? I'm such a romantic @ heart that I started crying when Bill sat down @ the piano & played a softer rendition of the Linda Ronstadt song that Frank started. It was because I knew he was singing to Frank. When Frank wants to die because he is in pain & only getting sicker, & Bill decides "u r not going anywhere w/o me", I couldn't stop crying. Even tho u girls didn't say too much this episode, it was good too see that I wasn't the only one affected by it. So, good reaction, see u in the next.👍😊

This is pretty different from what happens in the game. The show writers basically took the main idea of these characters from the game and ran with it. And, in my opinion, the writers have knocked it out of the park with this. What an amazing hour of television.

They hinted at a negative relationship in the game, but turned it around to show us a positive relationship in the show. Both ways were used as a narative in a way to illustrate important life lessons to Joel.

26:10 Bill is in the game, but their story is very different. This is the best ending, believe me.
    SPOILERS
In the game, Frank gets infected and kills himself before we meet Bill, who is left alone and bitter. You even find a very mean suicide note imp[lying he hated Bill.

  • @Dark__Thoughts
    @Dark__Thoughts ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah, none of this was actually in the game (as in the Bill & Frank story). Bill had only a pretty small, yet funny role, as he was also constantly bantering with Ellie, which many were looking forward to. Can't be mad though, this episode was a freaking masterpiece in writing, story telling, cinematography, and acting. Like all the freaking details alone… I keep finding more and more things every time I watch another reaction.
In the game Frank hated Bill and got bitten in the attempt to get away from him by salvaging a battery that Bill, Joel & Ellie were looking for. You only find him hanging from the ceiling, leaving a nasty farewell letter to Bill, which you can decide to show him or not. So this ending is very different but much better, with a huge backstory that we did not have before.
And Ellie does know cassettes, but that will likely come a little later when they cover the DLC content. But yeah, "spoiler", the show is not really about the infected. :)
Everyone seems to cry btw. Just look at some of the other reactors. lol

Bill and Frank are in the game (well sort of) Bill is the main character, you don't see Frank and when you do he is dead. So this is not what happened in the game, but Bill is where Joel got his car from.

Majority of this deviated from the game quite a bit. Bill and Frank had a sort of love-hate relationship throughout the game (pretty heavy on the hate though) but it does show that Bill loved Frank a lot more than Frank loved him. We also didn’t see Frank alive in the game, he had killed himself after getting bitten, while Bill stayed alive, he was quite a jerk still to Joel but did inspire Joel quite a lot because it helped him realize that he needed to show compassion to the people around him or else he’d end up like Bill (alone and a bit of a jerk lol.)

    • @riann7707
      @riann7707 ปีที่แล้ว

Their relationship also wasn’t clarified a whole lot in the game, only referring to one another as partners, but in the truck Ellie finds an adult magazine filled with men that she said she stole from Bill so it’s implied lol.

    • @nicolet8186
      @nicolet8186 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I don’t think you can say that Bill loved Frank more than Frank loved him in the game - I think what the game shows is that the game version of Bill wasn’t able to grow and change the way the show version of Bill did, and it eroded his relationship with Frank. Frank’s letter was passionate and the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s apathy, so there was still a lot of emotion on Frank‘s side too.

The show did it way more beautiful than the game. The game hints there relationship was somewhat passive aggressive. That there love was just convenience of two people happening to be around eachother...
The show gave bill and Frank a actual love storyline which still plays a purpose to Joel character arc

    @Jyn x Ryl,
4:34 Yes, the next phase up from Stalker (this one) is Clicker. When the Cordyceps are ready to fruit (blossom) they split the skull horizontally just above the lip. As this happens the host's face falls away along with his/her eyes or ears. Clickers rely on their own heighten sense of hearing which they use to find their way around via echolocation.
4:48 This was some unprovoked aggression right, here, but this might make more sense when we get Ellie's back story. I don't know when it's coming but it is coming--it was teased in one of the commercials. More importantly, Ellie needs to learn how to defend herself. She can't always rely on Joel. Knowing what and how to kill a Clicker is essential, and seeing how Joel won't let her have a gun, she's got to find time somewhere to get some sort of practice, I guess.
5:03 I think she cut away the face to see if what she heard from people that saw things beyond Runner (the first phase) was true. Remember when she was on the bridge from Boston with Joel and Tess she talked about what people around her told her what different Infected looked like. We can gather from what she was saying that she only encountered a Runner and that she saw a Clicker for the first time in the museum. This is Ellie's first time seeing a Stalker. The fugal growth likely intrigued her, and that's likely the main reason why she cut the face to see if there was anything human underneath, which there was. The cordyceps are replacing the host with itself. Ellie learned the night before that a blow to the brain will kill the infected, and so that's what she did. I don't think she realized that she put the Infected prisoner out of his memory, but he likely welcomed that, as his death ended his nightmare. The Cordyceps, however, will live on until the body has nothing left to give. If we could've stay and watched the body, we'd see the cordyceps growing away from the body, attempting to find a new host and food source. As there's nothing down here, the cordyceps will like dry out and die down here before someone else stumbles upon this room, but I guess time will tell.
12:38 That's what I'm thinking too--who cooks like that?! Bill knows he way around a kitchen and he knows his wines. Bill is an everyman! In the game he was a grumpy survivalist who could make anything, but I don't recall if the game said what he did before the outbreak, but I feel like this story added to his character in a very big way, making him more likable and more relatable. We never got to see Frank really in the game, we mostly read about him in letters, so this episode made both Bill and Frank bigger and much more interesting characters, IMHO. What a great story they were given =]
13:36 opposites attract and Bill's been alone for 4 years. He was alone before the world fell apart, but he's had no contact with anyone since the outbreak. His "Don't tread on me" flag in his basement shows that he was a rightwing conspiracy theorist, which this story will touch on. His inability to trust people growing up made him a survivor, but Bill showed him how to really live. These two very opposite people completed each other.
15:58 I agree. Bill and Frank are about 50 here. While Frank already knew who he was, and was happy. Bill was likely miserable because he bottled who he was and tried to be the person his mother wanted him to be.
18:00 Couples. This seemed so real to me, lol. Bill doesn't care how his house looks--remember their was dust building up on the furniture. Frank is a bit of a clean freak. Bill doesn't care about those things, because he's only think about surviving. Frank is focused on living, and he wants Bill to live, not just survive.
    18:23 Exactly!
21:10 This is 2010. Tess and Joel went back to see them and trade. Frank liked them...Joel, well, not so much, lol.
22:12 not really. Frank and Bill had a falling out and Frank ended up taking his own life to get away from Bill ='( Had Bill let Frank leave the way he wanted in this story, Bill still had room to become the person we saw in the game. Without Frank, Bill likely would have slipped back into the person he was and his loss would have made him hate the world more, one would think. I much prefer the story we go here instead. Bill choice makes sense, and is a story that is going to help Joel moving forward.
23:38 Bill wasn't afraid before he met Frank, remember? Bill has something to lose. Frank! And he doesn't want to lose Frank. Frank is safer in the house, sleeping.
    23:43 Exactly!
26:18 The game focuses on Joel and Ellie, so no. Bill is a side character and Frank is a side story. This game is 13 years old, and while it was doing big things back then, games just didn't spend time on side characters like this series is doing. Neil Druckmann was given a second chance to do this story over again and he made some beautiful changes =) Niel Druckman wrote the Last of Us for Naughty Dog and he's part of this HBO special along with Craig Mazin (HBO's Chornobyl).
26:24 Craig Mazin said that they didn't want to say what it was, but folks online asking questions got him to confirm that Frank suffers from a degenerative neuromuscular disorder--either MS or ALS.
29:05 Oh, this is that sort of story! Screw tissues, keep a towel by your side. You're going to need it with this story called the Last of Us.
38:34 The world stopped advancing in 8/26/03. iTunes would have been around, but only for a few years. CDs were mainstream by now, but Bill's TVs show that he was still okay with old technologies. QZ's had to get by with what they had, and I imagine a lot of cassette players were common in schools. Cassettes were slowing down in production around this time, sure, but they were much cheaper than CD players and a lot of people likely still had them in their homes.
I like that Bill and Frank's story starts and finishes with the same song. What an excellent way to wrap things up.
39:30 Some's inner Frank came out, lol. That's exactly what Frank said when he was served a 3 Star Michelin lunch during the apocalypse, lol.
Another fine reaction, ladies. Get those towels ready moving forward. It would be a good idea. Seriously.
