CKN on Facebook! - / 102313519812201 CKN on Twitter: @thecoverkiller These 10 Artists/Groups/People decided to be a special kind of stupid within the musical universe in 2014.
I agree with this entire list for the exception of the Taylor Swift bit. As much as I fucking despise her music I agree with her statements on Spotify 100%. Spotify is completely ripping off musicians. Artists get fractions of a cent per song play. Which, unless you're a popular artist, will never yield to an actual amount of money coming in from Spotify. I can understand why you would think it makes her look spoiled, seeing as her album sold well and she makes tons of money. However, the only way the message that Spotify is bad will ever get across is if it's told by popular artists. If a band like, say, Between the Buried and Me were to make a public statement like that the only people that would hear it would be their fan base and people familiar with the metal scene. While that may be favorable for the scene, it still doesn't solve the problem on the larger scale. When it comes to things like Spotify, it's the only time it's acceptable for a millionaire to complain about losing money because it can potentially help all the smaller artists without the exposure gain more. And that is why I have never streamed a single second through Spotify. The bands I listen to are not widely popular and barely make enough money to live (and many don't, working jobs in between tours, etc), so I buy their music to show my support. That's what real fans do.
People who hate on BABYMETAL are really missing out. I flew from NC to NY to see their show last month and the show was incredible. This coming from a life time metalhead. If nothing else the metal musicians in the group are masters of their craft. CKN you should check the more obscure songs "Rondo of Nightmare" & their heaviest, "Catch Me If You Can" Album is on Spotify if you ever want to review it but not pay for the iTunes version! :)
I love these vids because CKN's insults are fun, but every time I watch those, I think to myself: "Thank god I don't know what's happening to musicians outside the studio or concert hall. I should keep it this way".
At first I was kinda expecting to see some sort of statement about Jari Mäenpää here, but I realized you had some very different and much more deserving fish to fry. Are you planning on covering anything concerning the whole Wintersun thingy? I haven't really seen much news about it in a while and I really just need some kind of Wintersun update or discussion. I need my fix of Wintersun man. :P
I'm a bit surprised As Blood Runs Black wasn't on here for when they didn't give their fans that advanced copy for their album when they donated to their Kickstarter. Bruce Dickinson has also said some douchey things like punk musicians being talentless and jealous of metal bands, as well as accusing Rob Halford of using a teleprompter. Other than that, great list!
Justin jonston C'mon. You don't think the whole industrial/experimental hip-hop scene is a positive for music? Some of the best albums of the past decade+ are hip-hop.
To be honest, I don't disagree with Gene about rock being dead. Sure, there are awesome rock bands out there, but almost none are popular. The Foo Fighters is basically the closest thing to a popular rock band there is and even they aren't all that popular. I agree with him in the sense that rock is no longer a real commercial force
Even though Gene is a dick, I have to agree with him. The only time you'll hear good rock music is on classic rock radio and EDM and dubstep have completely trashed rock. It's sad, but rock is dead and likely isn't coming back
And for all of you guys who are wondering what good hip-hop will come out next year, check out Joey Badass. His new album is coming out next month and has a strong classic boom bap feel with witty lyrics, social commentary, and tons of energy.
I got no problem with the existence of Babymetal. But just because they got "metal" in the "band" name, that doesn't mean it's Metal. Still, the name's alright, I don't care, because I don't like them and they don't play music that can be called Metal. It's basicly J Pop with some Death Core sounds as a gimmick. I saw a newspaper article a huge fan of Babymetal shared on a social network. That article's title was something like "Babymetal - The new face of Heavy Metal" I just thought: "Seriously? Fuck you. This is not just an extreme exeggeration, this is a fucking insult to metal." (I am aware that Metal has many sides and no single "president", so see that as you want, that's just what I thought at that moment.) Later I had a debate with that fan who then showed me a couple of songs. One of those was actually pretty good. And it was the only song that didn't try to sound like anything close to Metal. It was basicly just a Piano ballad. So if they don't try to force Metal into their J Pop, they're actually capable of making listenable music.
They aren't calling themselves a metal band just because it is in their name. The music is metal as fuck. I doubt you even listened to all of their songs. There are elements of J-Pop in some songs, and then there are songs that are mostly if not all metal. They aren't forcing metal into J-Pop. They are blending them together seamlessly so as to create something new and down right refreshing. "Metal" itself has grown tired and cut from the same cloth. I tried listening to some of the bands metalheads dub as true metal, and most sound terribly incomprehensible and indistinguishable. Babymetal isn't trying to be a metal band. They are metal, like it or not. Lastly, which one of the songs did you call a piano ballad? IDZ? You are wrong, as the piano is only in the intro of the song, which leads to speed metal. Sorry you are so salty over a fun new Japanese group. Listen to what you like and be done with it.
cjvvaliente I did not say that *they* call themselves a metal band, but that people who showed me songs that I can not call metal do so. "Metal" itself has grown tired and cut from the same cloth." I'm familiar with that point. And I just say: Nope. I don't think so. There are pretty much no rules to music. But there are certain elements in music that define wether or not to put an artist into one genre. And Metal is extremly diverse. When one sub genre has a weaker phase, another one rises up. Babymetal is allowed to use heavy guitars. I can't stop them from doing so and I don't want to. There are some sub genres of Metal that I refuse to acknowledge as Metal from time to time. These are Nu Metal and Metalcore/Deathcore. Nu Metal is quite often very radio friendly music which almost borders into regular pop music. So there are Nu Metal bands such as Slipknot, which I do call Metal and then you got Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit which are by far further away from Metal. No Metal, but still Nu Metal. Just because something's Nu Metal, it doesn't need to be classified as Metal. That's how I see that. The same goes for Metalcore and Deathcore, because those seem to border into Harcore Punk a lot. In case of Babymetal, I say this: Next to J-Pop they may be put into the genre "Deathcore", but that doesn't mean that they're a Metal band. And I think we all can agree that Death Core is extremly heavy music. Now you said: "I tried listening to some of the bands metalheads dub as true metal" Are you just reffering to the more or less official genre called "True Metal", with bands such as Manowar? Or what do you mean? Because to me this sounds like you're barely listening to anything else but Babymetal, which leads me to doubting that you know what you're talking about when say "Metal". That may sound rude, please excuse me for that, english is not my native language. Well, do you mean that "True Metal", or just these regular Metal bands that everyone agrees on as a Metal band, like Maiden, Priest, Arch Enemy and Slayer? As I said before, I'm fine with you listening to Babymetal. You like what you like and I like what I like. And Babymetal does not belong into the second category, no matter if they're Metal or not. (Considering what I've heard, they're not.) And sorry, no, I don't remember any of the songs. I think that argument was almost a year ago, I didn't listen to it again, because I did not like it. Neither the music, nor the lyric translations that I got. rezargamer I heard that argument a lot. But I never said that they don't play Metal because I don't like them. Just because music can be classified as Metal that doesn't mean I like it. There are plenty of Metal bands and albums that I don't like and I do acknowledge them as Metal. At the same time I enjoy lots of music that I don't call Metal.
For me, it's the fact that you're blending metal with J-pop and you get something that's really horrible in my opinion. I mean, the 'metal' parts of what I've heard were alright, but whenever they started singing and J-pop kicked in, it made my head hurt. And what's the point of it all? To make something new? By blending metal and J-pop? Seriously? Why not just let metal be metal and J-pop be whatever the fuck it is? And also, it's the fact that they're playing on these metal festivals. You go to a metal festival to see Babymetal? Really? Don't get me wrong, I've got no problem with kids trying to have a career in music, but it all sounds so fake and it feels like these girls don't really care about what they're doing, that it disgusts me. That said, I don't really care about them. Let them do what they want, just don't shove it in my face. They'll be all but forgotten in a two years time anyway. Well, that's my two cents.
I would add Bono to this list. While I completely agree with the fuck-offs you've mentioned, at least they didn't force their shit into your media player. But when U2 decided to give their 2014 album free to everyone's iTunes account without the choice to purchase freely, it pissed me and many others the fuck off. I never liked U2 and I dislike the band even more than I previously had before.
I don't get why there's people whining about the whole Babymetal thing, I've just been indifferent to the whole thing since I have other things going on in my life. Great video.
***** Metal heads have always been like that, if they don't like something instead of just leaving it the fuck alone and letting those who do enjoy it in peace, they'd rather bitch about it endlessly to everyone who will listen and even people who are trying not to listen. As a metal head myself I don't understand how it's so difficult to just pay no mind to the music you don't like and focus your attention on the music you do. People don't need to give their input on every single thing they don't agree with.
Meg doesn't write the songs, she's just an "artist." I want to hear what she's actually written. Also, I agree that AATB is a very negative song for many reasons, mainly because she's average sized.
What about "our-favorite-Sumerian-Records-signed-hoaxcore-band-that-doesn't-deserve-to-be-named-properly"? That was one of the most insanely stupidest publicity stunts that ever happened in metal department. Kidnapping or going missing isn't fun. And those guys actually denied that this stupid PR-stunt actually happened. So I guess "this-hoaxcore-band" is deserving to get, at least, honorable mention. Or, as in case with this video, dishonorable one.
Also, the Kanye hate is irrelevant. Well, in most cases. People will shit all over his music without have even hearing it. Yeezus was shit, but he has some classics under his belt. He's always been overly confident, but he's been just rolling with it because everyone's made him out to be the fucking devil since 2009
i bought the second version of Ellie goudings second, album but she had over 12 new songs so it was worth it. i also bought three different version of david guettas one love album but it was over 16 new tracks.
I am with you an all things said but I am less harsh about MEHgan. I don't hate but definitely usually avoid so the repetitive nature of her songs don't wear on me. And I am totally with you in regards to her size. She isn't "big" IMO either
I felt stabbed wheb you said kiss is overrated as shit. But when you said douche canoe I laughed my ass off. Your my fave TH-cam account, and I'm 13 and a metalhead, with damn close to the same music taste as you, but tbh I have the exact same music taste as "ranterinshades"
As far as i'm concerned, that Babymetal thing was just a bunch of casted lil' kids, right? I'm one of those guys hating it, cause it feels more like a product than music in the first place. Although, missed Nicki Minaj on this list.
Just try to see it as a theatre show as opposed to artists expressing themselves via music. Like a Schwarzenegger movie vs. a Stanley Kubrick movie, both are music, both are hugely different, but both can be enjoyable right?
It was "manufactured" but so is a lot of music in Asia (namely Japan and South Korea) but they are not as hypocritical about it as Americans are. Most "artists" are manufactured now a days, it is just that they are more open about it.
Sebastian B. Yeh a lot of what you say is true, but furthermore (in Japan) people are VERY well aware of who musical artists are and who the "manufactured idols" are. It isn't hidden, just accepted that some people like one or the other or sometimes both.
I realize this is my third fucking comment on this video, just adding thoughts as I watch. The Iggy Azalea shit is ridiculous, there hasn't been a REAL rap beef since Nas and Jay-Z. She's almost as destructive to music as Meghan goddamn Trainor
i really feel like this guy is my bigger brother because i come here to vent and remember i am not alone in these thoghts his channel is my savior just like chirstian people read the bible
I agree with the whole "songs that people cater to" are shit. The one song that got really popular that is actually good imo opinion is take me to church. What are your opinions? This was fucking hilarious btw 😂
Iggy azaleas "reclassified" is basically a deluxe addiction of her debut album including a few new tracks, pretty much every artist does this, I don't understand your problem with it?
watching these videos is more entertaining and refreshing than watching t.v.
I hardly watch TV anymore. There's hardly anything on there, unlike there was back in the day
Great list as always, CKN.
(You did skip over #6, though.)
I agree with this entire list for the exception of the Taylor Swift bit. As much as I fucking despise her music I agree with her statements on Spotify 100%. "songs should at least have a little ballsack" - CKN 2014
words ill live by for the rest of my life haha
Spot on with Kiss. Great live performers but mediocre songwriters.
There's a lot of shit going on here, for a minute I thought it was gonna turn into a GG Allin show.
Lol
Fun fact: Kiss means piss in swedish
My top 5 idiots of 2014
5. Phil Rudd
4. Ted nugget
3. Taylor swift
2. Justin Beiber
1. Gene simmons
I've lost most respect for Phil Rudd
I love these vids because CKN's insults are fun, but every time I watch those, I think to myself: "Thank god I don't know what's happening to musicians outside the studio or concert hall. I should keep it this way".

Honestly, I had no idea who Garth Brooks was before this.
Liar
me too
+10 for an awesome belt holder thingy
Your metaphors are amazing. Also, I am proud to announce that I have no idea who Garth Brooks is.
"Kiss is overrated as shit" could not agree more
They're very overrated. They spent too much money on their image and stage show. They didn't allow any work for their shitty music
2008-2014 when it comes to music outside of metal and hard rock just completely sucked ass.
The past couple years were amazing for hip-hop and indie rock has been flourishing.
J. Deiss I disagree with you on hip hop (even though some people are tolerable), but Indie rock is definitely a plus.
Justin jonston C'mon. You don't think the whole industrial/experimental hip-hop scene is a positive for music? Some of the best albums of the past decade+ are hip-hop.
J. Deiss I do like some hip-hop, other than that, I really am not a fan.
Justin jonston Fair enough.
Do you happen to like Death Grips?
To be honest, I don't disagree with Gene about rock being dead. Sure, there are awesome rock bands out there, but almost none are popular. I wish you worked at my local f.y.e. Discussing and recommending bands and such would be fun.
And for all of you guys who are wondering what good hip-hop will come out next year, check out Joey Badass. His new album is coming out next month and has a strong classic boom bap feel with witty lyrics, social commentary, and tons of energy.
Your rants still remind me of the TV guy from the movie They live. They're fucking fun to watch.
I farted for you.

That was more of Apple's decision, not U2's. If he put Bono on this list, he would have to put Tim Cook on his list.
Does CKN work at F.Y.E?
That's what his shirt says.
I just wanted to confirm...
Confirmed ^^
Alright.
I don't get why there's people whining about the whole Babymetal thing, I've just been indifferent to the whole thing since I have other things going on in my life. Great video.

Maybe this band just knows how to bring out everyone's inner "baby." lol :P
Dumbassitude, love it
LOL I laughed with the part of Iggy having beef with Snoop.
Justin Bieber is probably the biggest poser of all time.
shitizzle a pizzle
Meg doesn't write the songs, she's just an "artist." I want to hear what she's actually written. Also, I agree that AATB is a very negative song for many reasons, mainly because she's average sized.
Surprised Dave Mustaine never made this list tbh
Dave had a pretty good year mediawise. Lifewise it was pretty bad.
Every single Nickleback member.
Please do a review of royal blood, love to hear your opinion
"Douche canoe" lololololol
What about "our-favorite-Sumerian-Records-signed-hoaxcore-band-that-doesn't-deserve-to-be-named-properly"? That was one of the most insanely stupidest publicity stunts that ever happened in metal department. Kidnapping or going missing isn't fun. you need to get a fill light for the front cos there's a bit of glare
Are you going to review the new smashing pumpkins album?
Are you kidding me the Beatles were only around for 7 years and they sold more than Garth Brooks
***** The Beatles have sold 209 million albums in the US alone
"You made shitty music, your music is really really really fucking shitty, please stop making shitty music, die." love it hahaha

Don't you mean Justin Beaver? XD
I am with you an all things said but I am less harsh about MEHgan. I don't hate but definitely usually avoid so the repetitive nature of her songs don't wear on me. And I am totally with you in regards to her size. She isn't "big" IMO either
Nice closet door at the end
So pissed that you had to stand this time. Haha
I wish my middle name was "the fuck"
I felt stabbed wheb you said kiss is overrated as shit. But when you said douche canoe I laughed my ass off. Your my fave TH-cam account, and I'm 13 and a metalhead, with damn close to the same music taste as you, but tbh I have the exact same music taste as "ranterinshades"
Can we agree overall that 2014 Sucked ass.
I wonder how CKN feels about math rock
2015 will only get worse...but I'm surprised Dahvie Vanity or w/e his name is isn't on this list :O
good thing I've never heard any of these people's music, maybe God does exist and he's been looking out for me
Don't you mean Taylor Swiss Cheese? XD
Revive Rock Music!!!
I would have bet the bank that Dahvie Vanity would have made this list.
Ted Nugent is like Gene Simmons because he has one of the biggest mouths in music.
eminem and Beatles was the best selling artists
As far as i'm concerned, that Babymetal thing was just a bunch of casted lil' kids, right? I'm one of those guys hating it, cause it feels more like a product than music in the first place. Although, missed Nicki Minaj on this list.
