Why does everybody hate Nickelback? I like em. And I'm not trolling, I legitimately like them.
The reason why people hate Nickelback is because they are a sad attempt of trying to be hard rock. Even metal, play this song anywhere and people will look at you with hate and tell you to listen to real music. The reason being is that this song gets played a lot in stores... I'm not kidding about this!

As far as I know, it is just about being mainstream. I'm not really a fan of them, but their music sounds good. If you get a headache from hearing his voice, I think there's something wrong with your ears. His voice isn't exactly soothing, but it definitely isn't the opposite either.
