The Grateful Dead perform Box of Rain at alpine valley 1989. Phenomenal pro-shot footage from the "outtakes" of the Downhill From Here dvd. Believe it if you need it...
This is my mom's song, forever. I wanted to be there, to do something for her, and I watched her while she was sleeping. now there's such a long time for her to be gone. I hope she's found direction, and gone to bloom for a new season in a different world.
Sorry, but I really appreciate the harmonies throughout the song on the album version. They make it superior to this even though this is live and has harmonies near the end. Harmony is something I miss from old music of my childhood. It is beautiful and should not be lost.
I guess I listened to the studio version too much. His singing was a real distraction for me... then again, the GD never claimed to be a precision band...
Phil sings better now; 18 years later. Jerry should have " kept his mouth shut" on "harmonies". Phil had throat cancer in the late 70's. Jerry suffered from "persian dragon throat" from shortly after Keith filled the hot seat. He really started " breathing fire when Brent joined up. Luckily Brent nose dived 1st. Such a shame. Greatest guitar player I've ever seen besides SRV. Read Wendy Weirs " in the spirit" if u need clarification. RIP JG. Miss ya every day since 95'
dude cant sing-was cruel to him to make him try-glad they captured it once for the studio version, kuz all the live versions i have seen, he has sucked.
They didn't "make" him sing. He wanted to sing. He wrote this song for his dying father (Robert Hunter wrote the words, following Phil's direction for the feelings he wanted to convey). Phil is not a great singer (he would agree), but this song is about the feelings, and it's a wonder.
i think phil is sing fine. year it doesn't compare to the studio version, but that goes to all the other band members as well.. not band and i don't mind it, but yeah if sung more he'd be better! but he rarely sings.

Well at 2:20 you can see he probably agrees with you: he jumped away form the mic quick!
Nice one. True Phil cant sing .-) But the song is very nice. The studio version (Very Best of GD e.g.) sounds better. Anyway cool video.
deadheads and the using of bobby and phils and mickeys names in sentences.

Yeah, it's unfortunate, My favorite Dead song and like the 2close2 detroit says no good live vocals!
