A lot of them are and some kind of scholarships from the schools and ain’t paying anywhere near 60k a year

SSM is in my hometown. Players are on Scholarships mostly, funded by the non sports student tuition. A lot of these kids aren't 'rich.' Also, fun fact, if you watched Mighty Ducks 3, the filming of many campus scenes was done as SSM (not all, and none of the hockey scenes).

It costs $10k+ a year to cart a Bantam AA kid around for a season without real coaching or an education.
