Personally, I miss single-brand Pay-Per-Views. They were a great opportunity for lesser-used stars to get a spotlight. And some of the shows rocked. Vengeance (2003) in particular.
With the high calibre of talent on display in WWE at this point in time, single-brand Pay-Per-Views could knock it out of the park.

In the early period of this (2002 to 2005), we had the best WRESTLING roster of all time. I'm talking about for the in-ring performances at or near the top of the card. We were transitioning from the end of greats Austin/Rock/Goldberg/Lesnar at the top to the beginning of new greats Orton/Cena/Batista/Edge at the top. During this transition period, we were blessed with some of the best in-ring work of Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Booker T, Christian, Eddie Guererro, Chris Jericho, Kane, Rey Mysterio and Rob Van Dam all in their prime. Shawn Michaels was back and as great as before, and the classic Undertaker character returned. It was the period of the original Evolution run on Raw. Many all-time classic matches took place at this time. There were definitely some total trash storylines as mentioned in this video, but the top tier in-ring action during this time frame may be the WWE all-time peak.
Edit: I must add: Born from this period: THE ELIMINATION CHAMBER!

I always assumed the reasons for zombies and vampires on ECW was because it was on Sci-Fi Channel, back when the cable network tried to stick somewhat to its genre, and before it changed its name to "SyFy."
Simon is absolutely right about the wrestling quality on free TV, though. One good thing about one-brand PPVs was that the brand NOT having a PPV that month would put on at least one barn-burner of a main event around the same week the other show was having their PPV. In the U.S., the Lesnar/Angle Iron Man match aired on UPN, ffs.
