Cardinal 3 hours after hatching

  • As a continuation of my Fight for Flight series this video steps it up a notch in HD, and much improved camera angle. Regretfully this chick did not survive through the second day due to cold/wet weather. The mother continues to warm the two remaining eggs to hopefully complete this series with Flight. Although the incubation period is now on day 13, so it is not looking good unless the cold weather has extended this period.

Northern Cardinals are truly devoted bird family. They will do anything to take care of their chicks.

Female cardinals always look so cute in their nests. People don’t appreciate the females as much, they’re just as cute/awesome as the males

Funny shot at about 1:05 with the baby's head in between the two eggs! Wonderful video!

This is really a fantastic video of mom and dad working together. It is sad the baby didn't make it. I had a wren's nest in a hanging plant that the same thing happened. Unfortunately, nature isn't always pretty, but it IS nature. Really beautiful footage though. I'm going to look for your continuation now and hope it has a happier ending. 😊

There's such an interesting synergy between robins and cardinals. They frequently seem to nest near each other and cooperate defending the area. They're simpatico in some way.

You should put a a barrierting box near the nest to thwart off the cold & rain & snow mix. That's what I would have done. Try that next time, they might nest in the same place . A nice nesting box/bird house might work too. I did that & every cardinal chick survived.

The nest needed some kind of barrier against the cold. Poor bird didn't have a chance. I'm so disappointed.

Cutting the branches away from the top of the nest was a really stupid move. You needed a better view exposed the nest? They would NOT have nested there with that huge uncovered area. That hatchlings death is all on you. I am surprised Blue Jays or other predatory birds / animals did not wipe the whole nest clean.

@@robertproctor7771 You certainly never been to slaughterhouse. Here man kills animals to turn them into food. The only difference between chicks and hatchlings is that they were born to different mothers, but you think that killing for food chicks is justified, whereas killing for food harchlings is immoral.
That's because you taught to belive that every live matters, but also taught to be ok with eating meat (i'm not a vegan, i'm exact opposite of them). Despite you were living with it, you haven't seen a contradictory here because our brains automaticaly create excuses for problems like this - that's defensive mechanism. Even now you will start to invent... questionable justifications for killing animals for food, every one of which can be beaten by "but why can't hatchling be eaten instead?". The only exception is "it's dangerous", but c'mon, we have antibiotics.
