Missed capturing their flight on the 16th morning, yet this video condenses 14 hours (292 GB data) of footage down to a 5:39 minute timeline from hatching to flight. See other nature videos on Vimeo. When the baby robins are still in their nest they are called nestlings. Baby robins have their eyes closed and only weigh as much as a nickel. In a few days, the baby robin opens its eyes. After si...

As a continuation of my Fight for Flight series this video steps it up a notch in HD, and much improved camera angle. Regretfully this chick did not survive through the second day due to cold/wet weather. The mother continues to warm the two remaining eggs to hopefully complete this series with Flight. Although the incubation period is now on day 13, so it is not looking good unless the cold we...

Robin series will hopefully be better than last year's that took 14 days from hatching to flight with Canon XF 100. As you see her forcing herself down in the nest she is using her feet to knead the mud into the weave of the nest materials.

There's such an interesting synergy between robins and cardinals. They frequently seem to nest near each other and cooperate defending the area. They're simpatico in some way.

Cutting the branches away from the top of the nest was a really stupid move. You needed a better view exposed the nest? They would NOT have nested there with that huge uncovered area. That hatchlings death is all on you. I am surprised Blue Jays or other predatory birds / animals did not wipe the whole nest clean.

As far as I know, they continue to watch them on the ground - and feed them, teach them to feed themselves, till they can fly as well as the parents. Then they are on their own. I know Blue Jays and Cardinals stay in family groups till the juveniles are old enough to mate - a year or two. We had a 12 day old Robin (almost about the same age as the ones you filmed right before they left the nest) that I found running around on the ground one night. It was not ready for flight by far. We fed it and kept it safe, it became part of OUR family - until it realized it could fly farther than our yard - so she took off and went about her business. She would come sit and watch close by when my mother hung out the laundry, we knew it was her, but she pretty much just did her "Rockin Robin" thing and never really came back or near us again. She used to fly from me to my mother and then kind of nest on my mother's head at night while we had her in the house and before she left. I see here on youtube - Blue Jays that get raised by humans never forget their human family once they are released. They seem to come back and make sure the humans see their accomplishments! You have some great videos! I really enjoyed how you put it together. This is my first summer of backyard birding and it has been quite an adventure!

Unfortunately, nature isn't always pretty, but it IS nature. Really beautiful footage though. I'm going to look for your continuation now and hope it has a happier ending. 😊

@@robertproctor7771 You certainly never been to slaughterhouse. Here man kills animals to turn them into food. The only difference between chicks and hatchlings is that they were born to different mothers, but you think that killing for food chicks is justified, whereas killing for food harchlings is immoral. That's because you taught to belive that every live matters, but also taught to be ok with eating meat (i'm not a vegan, i'm exact opposite of them). Despite you were living with it, you haven't seen a contradictory here because our brains automaticaly create excuses for problems like this - that's defensive mechanism. Even now you will start to invent... questionable justifications for killing animals for food, every one of which can be beaten by "but why can't hatchling be eaten instead?". The only exception is "it's dangerous", but c'mon, we have antibiotics.

You should put a a barrierting box near the nest to thwart off the cold & rain & snow mix. That's what I would have done. Try that next time, they might nest in the same place . A nice nesting box/bird house might work too. I did that & every cardinal chick survived.
