I used to watch your channel years ago in college and you were a big reason I changed my major to ecology. I’ve worked in conservation and research ever since so thank you so much!
@ I love it! I work for an invasive plant research lab with the USDA and i study and raise biological control agents (insects) for potential release against weeds. I used to do environmental consulting (in geosynthetics) and HATED it lol but it made great money.
Welcome back! I'm about to graduate with a Bachelors in Environmental Science and your videos inspire me and direct me to areas of the field that interest me. Thank you so much!
Wow, welcome back!! I remember watching your videos in my junior year of high school when I was looking for animal-related careers, and now I am two years into my ecology degree! Thank you for your content + I hope you’re doing well!
@ better than I could have dreamed. This field has such amazing people, and I enjoy the coursework so much. I’m excited to see where the future will take me! I’m planning to specialize in herpetology, and possibly do research as a career.
Used to watch your videos all the time when I was in highschool. Now I'm in my third year of college studying wildlife management. Thanks for your inspiration.
@kristina_lynn it's going great. Lots of ups and downs as always but been able to push through. I've met great people and have been able to participate on research projects.
I am considering getting a bachelor's degree in environmental science and this video has helped me feel more confident in that decision. Thank you for sharing this video and I am looking forward to future videos!
You’re back!! Glad youtube put ya on my home feed! Welcome back. I found your videos 4 years ago when I was absolutely clueless about what was out there but knew I was passionate about wildlife. 4 years later ive accomplished some big goals like working with brown bears in alaska-thanks to your motivation. Appreciate it. Working on getting to the amazon jungle next year and finishing my wildlife and wildlands conservation degree 🙏
❤️ hope youre doing amazing and enjoying life with your baby. Thats gotta be the most rewarding life step of all. Have an awesome week! Merry Christmas
I’ve been watching you sense I started applying to colleges, I am now a senior about to graduate with a degree in Plant Sciences. I’ve been WAITING for you to return to help me lmao.
@@kristina_lynn a video on how to pivot from just basic life sciences into ecology or more conservation would be awesome! I work for botanical gardens at the moment and most have a conservation branch, but for full time employment being space at those organizations I'm having to use my PS degree for conservation and I find many conservationists dont take me suuuper seriously
I wish there had been someone like you when I was struggling to find my space in the field, you were sorely needed back in the day. I think it is telling that Environment still continues to base its' employment potential on whether the economy is healthy and not whether its important range of skills should be given priority and recognised as vital, given the fast-changing global temperatures. I graduated in Env Sci in 1995 and I think it is telling that my current career is Librarian and my previous career was in IT. When I left the degree, I had a "guaranteed" job with the UK Govt's National Rivers Authority (NRA). Between me graduating and the training course beginning (a period of 3 months) the then Tory Govt. launched an Environment Dept. What this really meant was a shrinkage of the National Rivers Authority and the Env. Health dept so the Conservative Govt. could both save money and look green at the same time. It, of course, led to my unemployment and the guy running our training had the sad job of ringing me (and I assume many others) to say our guaranteed training and job was no longer even a training course. My 10 years of getting poorly paid or non-paid jobs in the environmental field, or being told that Masters degree funding was going to be cut under Labour (just as I applied and was accepted on a fully-funded Masters degree in Education and the Environment) began slowly eating up all my finances and eventually, I had to leave the field through fear of simple poverty. It was when I had a hole in my shoe and had to ask my parents to buy me new shoes that I realised I should start looking elsewhere for jobs and within 3 months I had a fully paid permanent job that wasn't environmental. I think if I had any lessons from this, it would be to get jobs where they exist - those on my course (about 30%) who are still in Environment careers mainly work in Recycling, monitoring for industry or the burgeoning energy production industry because there is currently money in these 3 areas - though even they are often contract-based and energy production is very much goverment fudning adjacent, so is at the whim of electoral change. Here's hoping things get better but 32 years of watching the field of Env. Sci. suggests that humans just can't comprehend the big pictures and government is always looking to cut departments, not improve them. Whatever you do, be hopeful that you can push the narrative. I may be a School Librarian but I still regularly push the ideas and ideals to pupils who will listen. That said, even libraries funding gets cut every year, so it isn't just Env Sci that gets hit and my happiest years of employment were working on lower than minimum wage for a Wildlife Trust.
Wow, it's really interesting to hear how it was in the 90s where you were. Sadly, I agree with you, I don't think a lot of that has changed. Who is in power politically drastically impacts the number of environmental jobs available in the public sector for sure, with impacts into the private sphere as well for all of the environmental jobs deemed not important for a company's bottom line. In tough times, we have to make some hard decisions about who we work for to put bread on the table
This video now has me doubting going into biology. Does anyone have advice on what environmental jobs are available for biology majors? Should I just switch to majoring in environmental sciences?
WILD question: Did you used to create Zelda-inspired artwork online back in the day? I am not working in wildlife at the moment, I actually now work in the game industry. Sorry if I have the wrong person... if it is you, your art really inspired me years ago! I remember names and faces very well, and it is curious that this video made it into my recommendations.
@ LOL, yes, maybe you will meet her one day! I think this “other Kristina” is somewhere in the wildlife sphere now, too. I was told I have a doppelgänger too in computer graphics, have yet to meet her. 😅 Thank you for responding ❤️
I'm not as familiar with EHS as environmental science, but from my understanding an occupational health related degree is helpful, or degrees in the engineering/construction aspect if those are the industries you're hoping to get EHS jobs in. It's not unheard of for EHS folks to have enviro sci backgrounds as well. Often the best research is to look for open jobs like that in your area and see what degrees they require in the description.
Thank you! I'm going to begin looking at job descriptions. I'm debating on majoring in Environmental Business Economics with a focus on natural resource management or Environmental Planning as both fascinate me! That said, I'm hoping environmental planners are recession proof career as well. What do you think?
Yay I used to watch your videos all the time during my undergrad in environmental science 😊 now I’m working in environmental compliance doing CEQA/NEPA work and am happy I chose this path
I learned the hard way that NO job is stable like most ppl wanna believe. The best thing you can do live is frugally, save, have back up ideas and be flexible/open to new opportunities. I can see how frustrating it can be that your job as a wildlife person is dependent on funding. I think anyone going into this field has passion and you can sell yourself getting any impactful job if ur good at it. Look at what Steve Irwin accomplished being a wildlife guy AND having a show. If anything start your own show kinda like this one! 😊
I agree with all of this! There are ways to find work in any situation, barring extreme situations, as long as you're flexible and willing to work outside of your niche.
I’m so sad I feel like it’s too late for me:( sorry this will be long comment. I’m 27 and graduated with my bachelors in Animation like 5 years ago and I’ve always been in love with animals and have this new obsession with climate and sustainability and I want to do meaningful work so bad. I could never find a job in the animation industry and I’m currently working as a customer service rep sitting at a desk and I hate my job and life. Is it too late to pursue environmental science??😭 I’m just so unhappy and I’m so fascinated by this field I feel like it’s too late for me
Of course it's not too late! My best friend just graduated with her biology undergrad in her 30s and is working in wildlife, and I still feel pretty young still in my early 30s haha.
Thanks for the encouragement!! I’m currently taking some classes to see if I would really want to pursue this!! I also did a ton of research and and it looks like I can volunteer also:)
Always and if it turns out not to your liking you could always choose a degree that interests you more. A lot of people will say don’t get the degree it’s not worth and we are human so it’s okay to worry but with any degree it’s what you make out of it. Go network and keep fighting the big fight because no one will do it for you. Take it from someone who would always listen to others at times.
I don't think Kristina realizes just what the US is now headed into, and of how low a priority that environmental issues will eventually have over the next several years, especially regulations, a significant number of which will gradually be eliminated in favor of private sector profits.
Unfortunately I'm well aware of the situation in the US. I agree, I think it will be tough times ahead. People will have to make some tough decisions about who they work for and what work they are able to do.
