@@quickkits I second Ednitram's comment. I'm 61, and your videos are inspiring my return to the hobby. Young man, you are helping many, even tough you are currently taking a break. We will all break open the champagne when you return. Until then, keep safe and well.
Generic Asian #68301648 use some spare sprue and heat it up over a candle and pull either end away from each other and it will draw out a wire from the plastic
For anybody who loves painting tanks and aircraft. If you handpaint, get your self a tube or 2 of Vallejo Steel 71.065. This not only works as a primer but has turned all my tanks to looking like plastic to actually appearing as kits made of steel. It seals well and doesn't distort any colours you paint over it. I use noting but Vallejo and Tamiya acrylics and they make my models look fantastically realistic.
@@andrewoconnor5108 71.065 Is the code of the paint. My current project the Tamiya Sherman M4A3E8 when sitting in this paint looks metal NOT plastic. it's a great paint to use throughout build as it adds realism to your tanks but also helps any paints over it hold on better. I hope this tip works well for you and you need only to lightly apply it. Let me know how it goes and i look forward to hearing about it.
Fantastic advice there! For rigging I use either stretched spruce or invisible thread, superglued into place & tied if needed. I’d love to try EZline though, as it flies well and is elastic ☺️
Also, artists oils are all around fantastic for all-things-weathering. Washes, fading, highlighting and creating dirt effects.. and very forgiving since they have such a long drying time. Anyone who reads this, experiment with oils on your models!
Stuff I've learned from Owen (abridged)... using pastels and chalk for weathering, chipping techniques, how to get more details brought out, wash your parts before you build, how thin should your paints be, the list goes on and on - I never start a new build without reviewing my collection of Quick Kits vids. Thanks so much!
Great advice Owen! For my own models I have used Citadel Washes and Techinical paint which are acrylic base and work quite well. On my last kit I used a water soluble artist oil paint. It can be thinned with water and before it dries it can be cleaned up with a Q tip or cotton bud dampened in water. Good luck with the job and thanks for sharing these tips.
Thanks for your videos Owen. Really enjoy them. You have a unique point of view on modelling, which is really refreshing to see on TH-cam. Keep the videos coming. 👍
you could also warm up a part of the left over plastic and pull it on each end apart to make a very thin plastic string. You can also find it on TH-cam. Good Luck!
I can confirm, 'EZ line' is awesome if you can get ahold it Also not sure what Tamiya accent liner is made from 100%, but odorless thinners DO wipe it clean as if it were an oil wash. So use those varnishes to protect your base coats! /// Awesome little session here Owen!
0:52 i dont know where i saw it, but it works decently for me so far, is picking a piece of the sprue itself and heating it with a lighter and when its starts to be flexible pull it out, this should give you a decently thin (altho maybe a bit thick for some peoples liking) wire
what model brand do you think is better at planes (Tamiya, Airfix, Revell, etc.) and what model brand do you think is better at tanks (Tamiya, Revell, Dragon, Airfix etc.) I personally prefer tamiya for tanks and infantry because its not too expensive and its good quality and i personally prefer airfix for planes because they're easy and not too expensive
For scale wires I find the best option is old guitar stings, you have a good variety of sizes and you should be able to get them for free from your local music shop, just go in and ask for some broken stings and they will be more than happy to give you as many as you want
Owen I walked past a model store when I was 15 yrs old (1975). A model kit caught my eye. It was the original Airfix picture of Lancaster landing with one of the engines on fire. i went wow. I've got the original picture but not the model having moved too often. I have Lancaster model that needs some refurbishment.
When should I use (Enamel) Varnish? Unless your model has a dark base colour, you want to look slightly browned or dirty with age or is going to be exhibited in a very dark place, NEVER!!!! Use Matt, Gloss or Satin Cote instead; You can also make washes out of the Humbrol Cotes. Same for Humbrol Decal Fix (use Micro set/sol instead). Also, Revel & Tamiya 'do' make far better metallic colours and I personally only ever use Tamiya for clear colours.
Hey Owen, I know you won't see this but i built a 1:72 scale fokker eindekker and upon applying the decals, the fusalage decals are peeling off with almost no effort. Quite irratating. I've heard off applying clear nail polish but I'm reluctant to as I'm quite happy with the finish and don't want to ruin it. Please help
Greetings from Australia! G'day Owen, Would love to share that you were my inspiration to paint tanks by hand. Although I can professionally airbrush there's just something about hand painting. One of my favourite videos on your channel that helped me weather tanks was your Sherman Firefly. My question for you is, Do you enjoy building and comparing the differences in detail of US tanks modified for the British? For example the M10 Wolverine became the Achilles.
For the models where weathering is avoided (regardless of individual preference) there's always the planes used by aerobatic display teams like the Red Arrows. Though I suppose trying to replicate the immaculate gloss finish maintained on those hawks could be seen as a weathering challenge in itself...
Totally agree with Model Minutes. I always get the best results with multiple thin coats and not overloading the brush ('stretching the paint'). This will give you a fairly brush stroke free finish. You can get a good silver or aluminium finish this way I've found.
Hi - What do you recommend as the best matt varnish that you can apply with a brush, over the finished model (ie over the top of the entire model and finished decals)
My favorite part is assembling the model, at first you have that skeleton of the tank; then as you go further and further you get to see that famous or beautiful look of a tank or a plane and it just gets you (at least me) more hyped to make it good as possible.
Hi Owen, greetings from Serbia. I like the way how you have made a suggestions, and also answers with the model kit, painting, etc. However, I wonder one thing: Where can I send you questions about models, decals, etc.? I have no idea, that's why I'm asking. This is my third video that I have watched, and I'm also interested in learning new technique of model kits. Some of the techniques that I have seen I'm also using, before I have subscribed to your channel, and also without knowing your channel. Looking forward to see the answers to other questions, and also on mine question/questions as well (I hope). Keep it up, and don't give up.
I've never used Humbrol acrylics, but I love those Revell Aqua paints. they barely make any brushstrokes if thinned properly and when I use drying retarder you would think I'm using enamel paints :D The only problems that I had were with Revell Aqua 56 Blau, it seemed as if there wasn't enough pigment in them, they created these streaks of blue colour. Had to apply a lot of layers to make an even finish. Also I can't seem to thin some of the gloss paints with water, so I need to use alcohol. I'm glad you are back. Do you have any model kit to build for a video?

One word of caution... DON'T use a candle to heat the sprue! You'll run the risk of getting soot baked into the plastic.

for the guide wire, i used thin fishing line, with just a dot of glue on each end and it worked out just fine.
Excellent knowledge.
For the guide wires .I use an old usb cable and strip out the fine wires inside they sick easy with super glue and are super fine and very long .
I think the Red Arrow planes are the best to not weather because although they are used a lot, I would always imagine them to be perfect.
