    I do this for a living. Cutting the bead is unnecessary and will actually take more time because you have to pull out the piece that is still in the slot after you cut it. Also, if you had simply used your green utility knife and made several careful and deep passes when cutting out the old silicone/double faced tape, there would be no need for the tape to hold the window together. Also using a ton of silicone is unnecessary, making the masking tape unnecessary. And if there is any that seeps through, just wait for it to dry and then cut it away with your knife, or clean it with a utility blade and glass cleaner as lubricant. Just be careful not to scratch the glass. Finally, if you are by yourself, cut the old silicone/double faced tape thoroughly before removing the bead from the out side. It’s a lot safer. Then when you remove the bead, just pull the double pane out with a L shaped bar prying into the rubber of the double pane, not the glass, and catch it. Also make sure that the black rubber blocks on the bottom are not stuck to the bottom of the old double pane, so you can set the new one on them for protection. Those are my suggestions. I literally did these steps on several windows at work, just today. I’ve done this thousands of times. Just some tips for you.

    Good Job! If you want the silicone not to make a mess, I cut the tip of the caulking tube smaller to start remember if you use a smaller cut to start with you can cut the tip bigger Until your ok with the amount of caulking coming out of the tube. And if you cut the tip to big and you make a mess, then you have to get a new tube and start over.

      There's some good answers already to this question, but in my case I called Andersen directly and gave them the product code that was on a sticker at the top of the window. This allowed me to not only get the correct size but also all of the coatings to match the other windows. You can have a huge color and performance variation if you don't match the coatings of the original glazing.

    • @anthonymehring2064
      @anthonymehring2064 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do this for a living. I literally did this on several windows at work, just today. I’ve done this thousands of times. I do know what I’m talking about. The answer is actually no. If this is your first time, it might be a good safety precaution, but it is unnecessary. Just make several deep, careful passes all around the window with a utility knife instead of a flimsy exacto knife. It will be a lot safer and easier. There is no reason to break ANY more glass in this process, unless you are re-glassing a JeldWen window, in which case, your kinda screwed lol.

    • @greglautz8470
      @greglautz8470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed with the other commenter. The only time I make tape up glass is when using my oscillator to cut the glass free from the frame, the vibration may knock out some pieces causing a safety hazard for myself. It should be everybody's intention to remove the entire dual pane unit as a singular unit and not intentionally break it and make it more of a safety hazard

  • @greglautz8470
    @greglautz8470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Step 1. Cut your glass free using something other than a razor knife. If it slips out of there just once you can severely damage your window frame permanently. Or even worse yourself.
    Step 2. Go outside and remove the trim, not cut it off of there. That bead is brand new and does not need to be replaced even though Anderson provided you some new stuff. *note* some windows may require you to remove the glazing bead first to alleviate some pressure between the glass and the frame.
    Step 3. Remove any old sealants or double-sided tape holding your glass to the frame.
    Step 4. Reapply your sealant or double-sided foam tape and the same manner as the manufacturer did. Remember, caulking is cheap and leaks are expensive!
    Step 5. Install the new window glass making sure it is centered from side to side.
    Step 6. Reapply the glazing bead. That glazing bead could probably be pressed in simply with your fingers.
    Step 7. While the sealant is still wet, use a clean fresh double-sided razor blade to scrape off any excess on the interior. Yes, with that style of frame you will have some silicone that gets on the window frame. If you scraped it off well enough with the razor blade, any residue on the frame should be thin enough you can rub it off with your finger after it dries. Or you could spend the time and effort to tape it like you did

    Not to bad but I think you over complicated things.
    1. If you get silicone squeeze out wait for it to dry (2-4hrs) then remove with razor blade.
    2. The glazing tools you had are for putty windows are aren't really used for dual panes. I would recommend a
    4"flexible putty knife for cutting the back seal for most adhesives this will work.
    When determining the exterior of your replacement glass. Do not use the laser etched glass bug as a reference. These commonly change locations on the glass made by fabricators and are normally only on tempered glass.
    If your window has a Low-e coating there should be a small sticker saying Lowe or a picture of a sun. This sticker should be on the exterior. If there is no Low-e then the dual pane can be installed both ways.
    If your window has a texture or obscure glass on one side. We recommend installing the textured side to the interior.

      What part of the country are you in? Many higher-end manufacturers actually do have a laser etched bug on every piece of their window glass such as Pella, or Anderson. It is not only for tempered safety glass.

    • @mattpictaggi7504
      @mattpictaggi7504 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greglautz8470 We are in California. While most companies do have a bug on every piece it is not a reliable way to determine the handing of your replacement glass. Manufacturers commonly mess up the placement and can even double bug. The bug is simply there to help you identify the type of glass and the company it comes from.

    Instead of trying to clean up excess silicone; if you taped it off, then let it harden and cut it off with a razor knife.

      For the level of breakage on this window, you would only remove the glass when you're getting ready to replace it. If the entire unit is broken out and needs to be removed for safety, the sky is the limit for what you use to cover it up

    We stopped putting the beads on the outside about 30 years ago in the 🇬🇧 and we stopped using silicone to seal glass about 40 + years ago, if we done it your way every house would be broken into one a week 😂

    • @tysleight
      @tysleight 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So your saying the silicone is the theft deterrent ? You still have to be on the inside to push the glass out. This is how most glass is installed it sometimes a rubber gasket. But same idea.
      Armored glass on store fronts/ high rise are this way.

    • @seancoles7896
      @seancoles7896 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, your using silicone to seal a window! We use two rubber gaskets one on the inside one on the outside, the beading on the inside so no one breaks in as easy.....
      If we done it your way someone would be in in seconds, knife around the bead and silicone then a suction pad to pull the glass out....

    • @tysleight
      @tysleight 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@seancoles7896 watch it again. Without cutting the inside your never pulling that out in one piece suction cups or not. ( So if your busting the window anyway for crime purposes why would you try to pull it out? much faster to hit it with a rock). Anderson 100 casement windows have a double gasket on the frame and a liquid applied seal on the glass from the factory.
      I live currently live in an area that spring means high winds like sustained winds of 60+ mph you have to be careful with opening doors because IF your kid opened the back door and you try the front as soon as you turn the knob that thing is flying open and the opposite is true to the point of busting the door right out of the frame a time or two 😖 but never have I seen a window get blown away from the seal. I have seen broken glass from wind, but the seal was still in place doing its job.
      PS this area is typical nice except for a few weeks each spring.

      Have you seen the 30 seconds break in video via the sliding door and a rock. In and out in 30 seconds. Breaking in to any home with a sliding door is so easy. Why break a window?
