At my job when parts get prepped for paint they do what I was told is a 3 step prep(idk if there is an other term for it). They'll take down the big imperfections with 100 grit, when they have gotten rid of large imperfections they move to 180 grit and fare some more as to not take away to much. Then they will use 320 or 400 grit to finish and get rid of any lines that were left by the 100/180 grit. A similar process might work for you, I've never used plasti dip so it might also just be the paint you're working with.
Cool, thanks for the info, next Saturday I will be plasti diping my quad, i was thinking about paint but not anymore, fun video specially with the kids around, greetings from San Diego CA.
ramy munoz thanks. It will hold up pretty well as long as it doesn't get scratched. Some people put a clear coat over the plastiDip after and it lasts even longer
Here's what I did to my KLX 250 I wanted to paint the fairings using "Real" paint. So I first applied a product called Bulldog primer which is basically a spray clear glue. Once dried I wet sanded using 1000 grit then sprayed it using Dupi-Color followed by the clear coat. After cure time I buffed it to a nice shine. The Bulldog really allows the paint to bond. Up next for me is to paint my wheels black, that I know will take hours. Ride safe mate!
Since you can't get new plastics for a KLR I was thinking about past dip because it's not permanent and the paint that the guy I bought it from did was trash and it needs to be covered up. Your video was very informative and helpful and I'm definitely going to try it now.
I used plasti dip on my on 04 FZ1 over a year ago, worked great and is still on there. However, when I used it on my new WR it lasted one tail ride, starting pealing and rubbing off. So my conclusion is plasti dip doesnt work well on surfaces that easily comes in contact with branches, dirt etc... What are thoughts after a year or two, did it last??
The front fender that l dipped and painted lasted much longer than the plastic that l just dipped. The just dipped was just like yours, two maybe three rides.
Seems like cool stuff, might have to try it out sometime. For higher gloss, try using SC-1 Silicone spray. I use it every time after I wash the bikes and it impregnates the plastics with silicone to give it a nice glossy look. It does however make it harder for decals to adhere.
Bought the stuff at Lowes for about 6 bucks a can. Not cheap, but to do those three pieces with at least two coats each was just one can. Online there are many color choices but at my Lowe's they only had white and black.
Did it hold up at all? I'm wanting to paint my ds 450 front radiator shroud and side panels white but I've heard bad and good things.. can I put graphics over it? Will it last on dirt? Is it worth the time?
Mine looked and held up fine until it was hit by something else, dirt, rocks, mud. Then it pealed away. I'd say go with a paint that works with plastic or even a bed liner type paint.
Did great against the brush but not so good against the dirt. Eventually the bike did go down on some technical trail sections and the dirt and mud scratched it up pretty good. If you don't crash, you'll be happy
On some of those plastics gouges.... Hair Dryer after the sanding. Read up on that. Might melt them a little smoother. Disclaimer... Have not done that in years. Plastics may be different now. Also, drill stop the cracks.
+Ride AMAP (As Much As Possible) heat gun does help a little to make it smoother but you must be careful not to get it too hot or it will warp and melt too much
those side panels aren't going to hold up to you boots/legs. plastidip is great but doesn't like being rubbed... of course "fixing" scratches and tears is a matter of spraying more dip i did an entire car with it, plastidip is always bumpy
Ride AMAP hey how did the side panels hold up I'm contemplating dipping or just painting but I'm not to sure yet i assume painting and clear coating it would hold up pretty good but it doesn't really matter cause your boots will rub regardless lol
What I found hold up the best is spraying the plasti-dip than painting what you sprayed. It looks better and holds up better than just the plasti dip or just paint alone. The paint sticks better when sprayed on the plasti dip.
You are right man, there are a lot of video for Plasti dip and it works GREAT!!! :D Yeah, Plasti dip doesnt have a smooth finish, it is a bit rough but all in all, it still looks great!!!
I'm going to try it on the top of one our cars that is totally sun bleached. When we painted it and clear coated it, from spray cans, it looked great but no it looks terrible.
Heat gun helps with some of the scratches and little plastic pieces hanging off the plastics.
Holy moly man, on camera it makes it look like new!
It looks good but I'm more interested in how long it will took good.

Thanks for the tips. I know that process for wood works wonders, I would think plastic would be similar.
8 years late but what happens when you try to pressure wash it and has it also held up I've heard it really only does for about 2 years
Depends on how many coats you put on. The more coats the better. I put 6 coats on my car and it's fine two years later
@@RideAMAPahh tyty

Ride AMAP good tip, thanks again, keep it up man!!!👍🏻✌🏻
Yes! Cutting the ridges of gouges with a blade. Another great trick. Glad to see to trim the flanging material on the cuts for that second piece.

+Miracle Detailing by Kevin Awesome. Did you post of before and after? Wheels will be tedious.
Usually want to do 5 to 6 coats so it will peel evenly and easily
Good to know. Thank you.
Ride AMAP you might even try doing eight coats to 10 coats it might help with the abbreviation of riding in brush

Thanks, just be careful with them after you finish. When I crashed on a trail the plasti dip got scraped off in a hurry.

Awesome, I'll have to try that. I know they have a clear coat for the stuff but Lowe's didn't sell it.
after you are done sanding use a torch and go over the plastic it will shine back up to a nice gloss.
Thanks for the tip.
Looks good next time use a torch after sanding the heat will allow the small scratches to disappear
I've learned that more coats is a must as well.
so how many cans did it take to cover those pieces? I have mine stripped down to motor and frame. Might be a good finishing touch for the rebuild.

very cool, came out nice
Thank you. The real test will be the next time the bike gets laid down.
try using a heat gun for the scratches on the plastic works well
Thanks, I figured that out too later. This is an old video
Hahahaha your kiddos are hilarious!
Thanks Bro.
How well did this hold up?
Did great against the brush but not so good against the dirt. Eventually the bike did go down on some technical trail sections and the dirt and mud scratched it up pretty good. If you don't crash, you'll be happy
Did you say you heated it?
Yes, but after living with it, I would recommend a different paint. This looks great but first scratch and it looks terrible again

Good to know. I've heard about the drill trick but not the others.

How did it hold up?
It was awesome as long as it didn't get scratched again, so not great. If it was a dirt bike that never went on the dirt, it would be fine.
If you pressure wash the plastics you can get the dirt out of the plastics
Good tip
The bike you painted silver was an SP200?
Very close. It is an 1986 SP125. It was piece when I got it, un-ride-able
I have an 87 sp200 in my garage, it looks just like it.

ahh gotcha i may try that then
@@RideAMAP you mean it's best to just spray it with plasti dip or spray the plasti dip layer with normal paint in spray ?

Plasti dip fixes everything!!!! Much like duct tape :D
Good looking. Stay safe
Tankerman I was pleased.
