I was given the honor of ponying Mine That Bird when he made an appearance at Remington Park in Oklahoma. He was quite the character and all class. Every time a person lifted a camera he’d stop and poised. Thank You

Mine That Bird was no slouch. He won the Derby, then went on to do well in the other two legs of the Triple Crown. He'll always be memorable.

He probably wasn’t a slouch because this man said @2:20 *”…he knows when I’m going to BEAT HIM”* the horse probably gotten beaten so many times and ultimately did what owner/rider forced the horse to do bc the horse knew he was going to get beat! He must have been scared hence why the horse would bite him. THIS GUY NEEDS TO BE IN JAIL FOR ANIMAL ABUSE. And all animals taken away from him. I wish I had surveillance so I could document it and call the authorities. POOR HORSE!!!!

It took the great Rachel Alexandra to shut down his Preakness stretch run. No slouch indeed.

I watch that race at least 3 times a year and I still get goosebumps watching him weave his way to the front with a terrific rush. I love that horse.

It’s great to see this! This was one of The most thrilling races ever! I heard them go down the list of names of the horses that day. I heard Mine That Bird’s name and I said that’s the horse that will win, without having seen his odds first. Calvin Borel and Mine that Bird will always have a special place in my heart for that thrilling race! And I didn’t even bet on the race. I just called him to win.
It’s wonderful you love him and are taking good care of him too.

Had a similar feeling during the post parade when Birdstone went to post at the Belmont. He carried himself as if he knew the race was his. If I were a bettor, I would've put it all on him that day.

Kinda puts the whole "Every racehorse is shot when their done running," into the trash can doesn't it? This guy was and still is my favorite. These dudes up in New Mexico also ran in The All American Futurity races for Quarter running horses. I appreciate the Quarter horse world a lot! Their way different then the Thoroughbred world, more laid back. And usually the same horse who raced a quarter of a mile on Saturday, is the same one that helps around the ranch on Monday. Their versatile and treated this way, where as Thoroughbreds have always been thought of as just racehorses. Thank goodness OTTBWestern is helping to change this.

Well years ago, many of us rode OTTB and loved them. They were cheap and plentiful if you lived within a few hours of a track. Many retired sound too.
The last 15 years or so it's all about warmbloods and draft crosses for English disciplines. It's also because so many TB break down before they can make it to a career after the track. Not enough diversification in bloodlines and they breed unsound horses to each other a lot.
I'm 58 now, but when I was 22 I had a 9 year old gelding that had 154 career starts at track! Started as stakes winner, ended up as a claimer as he aged and slowed down. Made a great trail horse and foxhunter. Probably would've made a good drum runner too.
Yes, it's great for breed they're doing RRP incentives and western events. Those 6.5 furlong horses are speedsters and can rival many quarter horses.

I think it's great that many OTTBs have found new jobs after racing. Some take work to get them calmed down but if a person is willing to put in the time, they turn out to be fine horses. I'll bet the best thing they love about retirement is that they can be in green pastures and able to roll and lay down in grass instead of living in a box.

Good to see that someone cared enough about their Kentucky Derby winner to give him a retirement, since at least two of them have been slaughtered for meat, one in Japan and one in Sweden. A horse wins you all that prestige and money, you owe it at least humane euthanasia if you don't value it anymore.

Such a Cinderella story! I remember this day. I had been listening to all the talk before the race and because of Chip, Mark and can't forget Doc and his family. It wasn't all the best. I knew because Calvin was jockying Bird, I knew Bird would win! I went to bet on him, but the gal at the window didn't hear me correct and gave me tickets to the wtong horse. I sure was mad. I bet 3-$2.00 tickets on Bird. I would have won about $1,300! I sure was upset, but whatta do. I'm still so glad Bird won. I have the movie. I gave it to my 80+ year old parents to watch. My dad whooped and hollered! He just loved the movie. I pulled some other articles about Mark and Bird and the gang, post Derby on my mom's i-pad because my dad just had to know more. I'm glad it made him so happy in his late life as he passed just a couple years later.
I'm glad to see Bird's still alive and giving Mark hell!!

Secretariat was a great horse, but racing has been going on worldwide for thousands of years. We'll never know if he was better than Eclipse, or Kincsem, because they ran in different eras, on different tracks and surfaces. And it's impossible to compare a flat racer like Secretariat with a steeplechaser like Red Rum - each type of race requires very different skills. Secretariat was a great 20th century American horse, respect to him, but we can never know who the greatest of all time was.
