Fifty years after fall of Ethiopia's empire, survivors remember terror of Derg dictatorship

- Exactly 50 years ago, on September 12, 1974, Ethiopia's last emperor, Haile Selassie, was deposed after 44 years in power. A popular uprising and series of nationwide strikes put an end to the monarchy. The military then took over, leading to the feared Derg dictatorship, which remained in power until 1991. But the new Communist regime was opposed to the demands of Addis Ababa University students, who were central to the revolution. To explore this key moment in Ethiopian history, we spoke with surviving witnesses and key figures from that era. FRANCE 24's Clothilde Hazard and Olivia Bizot report.

No guy overthrew Haile Selassie I the first. The king stepped off the throne willingly. To take it up again to rule the world as the only pontentate the king of kings and lord of lords. Just like how christ lay down his life to take it up again.
The terror of Derg is nothing compared to what we are facing now, already a million people have died in the bloodiest civil war, and more than 30 million people are starving, still, the civil war is raging in two major regional states Amhara and Oromia, people are dying every day, the inflation, the cost of living and unemployment. We are living in hell !!! The international news France 24 presents the past as evil and the present as good and it's very tragic.

I was a teen during the era of the emperor. It was not a good time. The derg gave us hope that was quickly dashed. I left. My relatives survived TPLF brutality. Things are better now under P.M. Abiy.
