Removing a Chimney the EASY Way!

  • Removing a chimney can be overwhelming or scary, but it doesn't have to be. Chimneys typically are in a position most people are not comfortable to work in, but if you make you way on the roof, the right tools make the job of removing a chimney much easier.

You put more care and quality workmanship in this freebie repair than most roofers put into doing a whole roof. Hallmark of RR Builders.

Lol its true. Roofer came out and patched a hole in my roof. He put a piece of metal (thin gauge) over the whole and shingled on top of it. If anyone ever walks there, theyre done lol

As a three tab shingle roof owner, I found you can hide those last dollops/“bird poop” on the ridge cap. Rub two scrap shingles over it. The flakes or grains that come off stick to the tar and color match. Hides it from ground level nicely. Just my 2¢

Putting a new foundation under an existing house takes special skills. I have done it a few times, and every time there were different challenges. I found that the most effective way was to use a house mover to jack the house up. All your jacks are on the exterior and allows for foundation work without anything in the way. The only problem is moving around and transporting the large beams. Some as big as 16" x 16" and 30 to 40 foot long. Solved that problem with a logging truck with its own crane for lifting the beams.

It is great that the house is being saved and going through the renovation. More families will be able to enjoy it. Your lift makes the work so much more productive and safer. Expensive yes. But a fall could kill someone or disable. Can't put a price on that.

PLEASE yes, do the video on lifting the house! As I’ve commented before, I often watch you doing similar things to what my grandfather did, but using modern methods and tools that he never had access to. Showing the house lifting would be doing something that it sounds like you have only done once at your first property, while my grandpa did that, many many times, either lifting or moving houses. For the lift they would use screwjacks and manpower to crank them up! I remember when we were doing some project at home and my dad went looking for the screwjacks, and they had disappeared. Grandpa always painted his tools to try to discourage theft, but the screwjacks were very much in demand by other builders, or someone may have wanted them for scrap. Anyway, once they got the building jacked up, if they were moving it, they used iron wheels. When my dad was young, grandpa had a Caterpillar Sixty that they used to pull, and one of the men would start it, and then from the age of five my dad would drive. It was very slow, of course, so he was responsible enough to do that. All the men did the bending back of the telephone polls, cutting trees, etc.. I got to see him do the last one, a big white four square house that had to crest the hill and come down another until it was level, again, all on those iron wheels. By that time, there was no cat, so the pole was done by a John Deere 350 crawler, which was probably way way less horsepower than your track loader! Later when we moved to Illinois I got to meet one of the Muehlfelts (hope I spelled that right) and when he found out that my grandpa had been in the same business, it was like we were family, and he proudly took me to see his new monster tow vehicle. So I bet lots of people would really like to see that jacking up done. The last time I saw a video of their company doing that, they were using a skid loaderto run the steel beams through to do the lift.

We usually try and use a boomlift instead, get you closer so you don't have to throw the brick so far. Plus if you feel safety conscious you can use a harness and roof pitch don't matter as much for how comfortable it is to work on. If it is an old chimney with lime mortar it's just as easy to just knock them loose with a hammer as using a SDS, but when it is with cement, like it looked you had, a SDS is the way to go.

Tearing down chimneys is hot here because you can insulate better and a potential leak risk is taken away. With the ceramic tiling it is not so easy as with shingles.
We have to get a permit for demoing and the flora and fauna needs to be examined. That bat is reason to forbid the teardown. It seems so fast and easy over with you guys.
