    Tim's vibration at the concerts is an experience. He's made my clothes flap like a flag because of the soundwaves, he's broken speakers, he knocked a lady's false teeth out (he likes to tell the story of that. It's amusing), the floor shakes beneath your feet depending on where you are seated and the seats will vibrate too. At one concert I was at ceiling plaster was flaking down onto the stage and 2 front rows when he hit a low note in concert. He might be dangerous in some situations, BUT It's a must to experience that in person!

    "Filth... *good* filth" deserves its own hashtag #GoodFilth LOL
    ...and I couldn't agree more. Adam Rupp deserves some kind of award for this arrangement imho. Also deserving a shoutout is Austin's excellent quacky Strat-no-caster funk guitar part. :)
    I'm guessing you may not be familiar with Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms", so I'd love you to do a vid where you listen thru the original... then take a minute to wonder how anyone can turn that track with so much Mark Knopfler guitar into an a cappella arrangement... then let the Home Free version wash over you. If you're not impressed, I'll give you your money back myself!!
    Oh, & shoutout to Tuukka from Club for Five, for selflessly handing his arrangement to Tim when he started asking questions about it- Tim understandably stuck with the majority of Tuukka's arrangement. Nice to see positive, a-rising-tide-lifts-all-ships, perspective from folks in the a cappella world. :)

    First time I’ve seen one of your reactions. What I enjoyed most was the good analysis minus pretensions. Other reactors I’ve briefly watched with your level of musical analytics are trying too hard to impress us with their expertise and can drift into incomprehensible. I’m a mid level amateur musician who’s never developed her ear well enough to advance. I could follow everything you were explaining without feeling I was being talked down to. I look forward to watching more of your reactions.

    Adam Rupp's original introduction to this song got thoughtlessly deleted to be replaced by the standard tour date boilerplate. I managed to recover the introduction, which I believe gives some great insight to his thoughts on making this arrangement:
    On the surface, this arrangement of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" sparks the imagination with different musical themes, and brings life to several different scenes or imagery about the birth of Christ. However, a deeper understanding of the song reveals a call for peace in a chaotic violent world under the simple truth preached by Christ: love. Originally written during the Cuban missile crisis, a parallel can be drawn to any time when the world needs a reminder to love not hate. The theme of competing voices is echoed in the execution of the 4 different vocal parts that come to clarity at the 4th verse and unify with the same message in 5 octaves: "Listen to what I say. Pray for peace, people everywhere."
    - Adam Rupp

    I waited weeks for you to get around to this one! The Rupps' arrangements are so much a basic signature, full of dissonances that hold you in your seat, and syncopations that have you dancing in your seat. Your explanations of major and minor chords, of inverted 5ths ad 7ths, add immeasurably to our understanding of exactly why this is a masterpiece. In fact, just watching your facial expressions adds to the experience. Thank you for another entertaining and enlightening reaction! Have a happy and joyous Christmas Day!

  • @lrfcowper
    @lrfcowper ปีที่แล้ว +7

    An interesting piece of trivia -- when Adam first brought this arrangement to the group, they didn't want to do it because it was "too complex" (Adam apparently makes a lot of complex arrangements). But after a time they decided maybe they could record it, but there was no way they were going to do it live in concert. It's now one of the standard Christmas songs they do in their holiday concerts.

    • @SirHairless
      @SirHairless  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very interesting! I wonder which aspect they themselves find the most difficult - the harmonic side, the rhythmic/'tightness' side, the all-round variety side...or something else? I actually think Angels We Have Heard On High is more complex in terms of harmony, so I'd be inclined to think it's not the harmonic side 🎶

    • @lrfcowper
      @lrfcowper ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SirHairless I'm wondering if it's just the diversity of the arrangement -- you're not doing the same thing or even a variation on the same thing each verse, so it's hard to remember.

    Tim did the arrangement for their version of Oh Holy Night (when he was 19), and I believe Adam Chance arranged their version of Helplessly Hoping, so almost all of them can and do arrange music. And several of them write, too.

    It’s a pleasure to hear an actual in-depth musical analysis over and over from you sir. I’m looking forward to your reactions to something from Home Free that’s both musical AND incredibly humorous. For me, their humor combined with their musicality is delightful with distraction. Try “The Butts Remix” or “Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget”. There’s so many to choose from actually. I think it helps to explain their rabidly devoted fan base. I knew you would really enjoy it. I was excited to see your teaching. I've heard that Tim has literally blown speakers. This group is a really close second for me as far as a capella...my mother likes Homefree better. The beatboxer Adam Rupp's style is so different than Kevin Olusola's. A performance from PTX Christmas concerts ( I think I'm telling this right) is The Kevin Show Kevin's Fifth. Cello boxing, Matt Sallee drumming it up also and an orchestra. The man can dance and box at the same time which I imagine takes a huge lung capacity. One video gets the conductor dancing lol. Something to thinks about watching. It's a longer video but I really think you would like it, whether you react or not. I'd say you will react once you get around to it. PTX fans will appreciate it.

    I am so addicted to listening to this on repeat (focusing on one member at a time).
    This is one of the few songs where my ears are able to track all the voices. Most times I struggle to break down all the sounds from the voices not singing lead. In that respect your trained ear is my new best friend.
    Another satisfying reaction with you pointing out to me why my ears keep jumping all over the place being distracted by each part's little tweaks. Love that you enjoyed it as well.

    Here is the REAL DEAL .... the Greatest three Register Voice in TIM - a Bassist that makes Avi Kaplan smile in envy .... Thee Best Beat Boxer, the most sweet Mid Tenor = Rob ..... The near great diversity and great baritone - tenor in Chance .... leaving the HIGH Tenor = AUSTIN - none near him in ability, skill, control and power ..... any other A Capella group simply has none of these attributes ... add one Arranger = Darren Rust ... and the Result is Phenomenal !!! Also Tim does Less Leads than ROB, Chance .... surely less than Austin .... but, because he is clearly the most diversely skilled singer (anywhere) he has now (last seven years) Chance to cover The Bass Line ... such incredible talent !!! I suggest you listen to more of the well over 300 songs in their catalog .... and do what you will here with them. We will be with you ! Home Fry, jj

    The singing, harmonies and Adam's arrangement & beatboxing are just outstanding. There are a couple of live (fancam) videos where Tim's blown out the sound system (and a recent one where Adam Rupp did so). I Hope you had a wonderful Christmas - best wishes for you and yours in the New Year!

    I'm learning so much from your reaction videos and today you added a new expression to my English vocabulary: "good filth" (I loved it!😂). Thanks for your great analysis on this amazing performance by Home Free and I can't wait to also see your reaction & comments on Geoff Castellucci's super low basslines (I'd suggest your journey to begin with his participation in the VoicePlay's interpretation of Metallica's 'Nothing Else Matters'👌).

      Haha! You'll hear "good filth" (I suspect) quite a few more times in this Home Free journey 😂

    Oh you have no idea. Tim's lowest notes, in a concert are beyond thunderous. I saw their Divebar Saints tour in the very first show in the Fox theater in Tucson Arizona, and you literally can't _see_ when he goes low, because your eyeballs vibrate with the resonance.
