Sustainable business: It's not just about the why | Jeremy Moon | TEDxScottBase

  • Sure, what you sell is important, and so is why. But what about how? Sustainable business leader Jeremy Moon argues that businesses are at the heart of the climate problem -- and that they have the opportunity to be at the heart of the solution.
    In 1994, 24-year-old marketing graduate Jeremy Moon made a discovery that changed his life. A merino grower showed him a prototype fabric he'd developed from 100% merino wool. The discovery inspired him to quit his research job and mortgage his house to launch Icebreaker and pioneer a new retail category: merino outdoor clothing. Within a decade, Icebreaker had grown to become New Zealand's leading outdoor clothing producer and exporter with over 5,0000 stores across 50 countries. Jeremy holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Commerce in Marketing from Otago University. A leading figure in the sustainable business movement, Jeremy was named a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in 2008 for his services to business. Jeremy also chairs the New Zealand Government's Better by Design group which helps companies to become competitive internationally by integrating design principals across their business.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    It is not only expected but required! Our story of the WHY is critical to driving your mission but if we don't transparently communicate the HOW, then we are most likely covering up the dark side. The HOW must be transparent or you are probably green washing.

    Can someone explain this to me, "...the worst manufacturing I found was in china, old school polluters cutting costs. The best manufacturing I found was in China a new breed of highly efficient highly ethical companies with the best technology." Please sell me more! Eye roll.

      What do you perceive him to be selling with that statement? He researched globally to find an ethical manufacture and in doing so he discovered that it doesn't matter WHERE you manufacture, the geography does not make it worse or better, it all in HOW you manufacture. The point really had nothing to do with China, it is just the example he used because there were great ones and horrible ones there.

    Very interesting ideas. However, I think you can't claim your business is ethical if it depends on exploiting other animals.

      Dave Balmada I understand your point but these sheep need to be shaved regularly or they get disease and/or struggle moving because that have that much wool

      People often do not see the bigger picture.

    • @Opalmiller19
      @Opalmiller19 ปีที่แล้ว

      sheep-shearing is something that sheep need cause without it they can get so wooled down they can’t do anything, it is a creature in symbiosis with us, so is garlic, a plant that can’t go year to year without us, so we are it’s helper. We don’t eat as much garlic as could cause gum companies made it into a bad trigger yet it’s so healing (tasty and antimicrobial) And it’s these herbs and intact foods that will heal , not McDonald’s.

    • @Opalmiller19
      @Opalmiller19 ปีที่แล้ว

      We are told things like ‘this isn’t cool enough anymore’ cause companies need us to buy their item 📦

    • @Opalmiller19
      @Opalmiller19 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do agree on your point but oil-based synthic clothes are made from fossil fuel and as we shared, sheep need to be sheared and as the presentation showed, symbiosis is key.

    You lost me at the description of an 'ethical' business that exploits animals. Breeding animals to require regular shearing instead of molting, holding them captive in environments they're not native to, tail docking, mulesing, and then killing the animals when theyre no longer profitable. Any business that claims to be ethical shouldn't be exploiting animals.
