    In the beginning with this craft, wasn't there an issue with the blades over heating when in the forward position? I recall reading about how the propellers would overheat and expand and start slicing through the hull of the craft.

      Connor Vaughn...That is in every way, shape and form misinformation. While yes, there have been some issues, it was never the blades getting so hot they grew a few FEET. while yes, most materials, especially metals grow with heat (extreme heat), we are talking very very very small measurements.

    • @brookelynn6964
      @brookelynn6964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      theres only two things you could probably be thinking of....the first is the icing system on the blades have a weak point on some tabs of solder that will break and cause arcing and burn up a blade beyond repair. literally burn a hole through it.
      the second is in the beginning days the power module that folded the blades would overheat often and catch on fire but it never caused flight issues.

    It's kind of sad that this amazing craft has such a bad reputation. Perhaps if it was deployed more slowly and painstakingly the deaths could have been prevented. The Osprey is a revolutionary craft bringing together many technologies for the first time. This clearly represents a risk. Taking risk had always been an inherent part of development of new craft. It just seems this one was pressed into service before it was ready.

    I still don't understand. If it is being lifted like a helicopter then the center of mass must be directly beneath the engines, but if it is in plane mode the lift from the horizontal stabilizer would move the center of lift behind the engines causing it to fall forward. I see the back of the wings folding down but I would think it has to be the front of the wings to counteract that.

    • @Justwantahover
      @Justwantahover 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wings are cranked forward, maybe that's got something to do with it. As you said the c of g has to be right on the center of the props. C of g can vary on planes (a little bit) by tweaking wings and tail plane size and angle etc.).

    • @brookelynn6964
      @brookelynn6964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The center of gravity does shift forward when it rolls down into airplane mode. Sufficient airspeed counteracts that by providing airflow to the wings for lift

    • @Krebzonide
      @Krebzonide 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brookelynn6964 but if the lift is directly on the wings then it would be in the same spot as the lift from the engines in vtol mode, so how does that keep it straight if the center of gravity is moving forward?

    • @brookelynn6964
      @brookelynn6964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cheeseman it doesn’t move by much. The CG moves slightly forward so all that’s needed is a small correction on the cyclic stick

    • @leroyreynolds5472
      @leroyreynolds5472 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brookelynn6964 it actually moves about 12 inches forward as the nacelles transition from 90 degrees (vertical) to 0 degrees (horizontal). The large elevator helps counter the forward CG with downward force.
