Here Comes the CMV-22B Osprey Tiltrotor

  • The CMV-22B Osprey features a large wing with two Rolls-Royce T406 turboshaft engines. The Osprey can rotate the engine wing and engine vertically to take off and land like a helicopter. Once in the air, it can rotate the wing 90 degrees and fly like a conventional twin-propeller aircraft. In aircraft configuration, the Osprey is significantly faster than a helicopter, cruising at a speed of 280 knots.

    It’s expressed in terms of “knots“, not “knots per hour“. A boat is traveling at 9 knots, or X miles per hour. It does not travel at “9 knots per hour”. Thanks!

    • @werk62
      @werk62 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @ThePolarised A knot is not a nautical mile. A knot is nautical miles per hour. Instead of saying nautical miles per hour, because that is too long, we say knots. Knots per hour is redundant. In fact knots per hour would be like saying "nautical miles per hour per hour" which would actually be a measurement of acceleration, not speed.

      The US has plenty of faults but they've always had a top tier military. At a time when most countries in the world were lucky to have ships that could sail far enough to not see land, the US built frigates that could go toe to toe with battleships and then sent them half way across the world to take down some pirates in Africa. They built some of the worlds first air craft carriers, the first missile subs, pioneered many tactics and designs, and were the global naval leader from WW2 to the present day to the point that even "superpowers" like China thinks its pretty much impossible to compete on the open water.

      America has its faults, but nobody beats us in the world of military equipment. Enemy Zeros shoot down a plane? We keep slapping .50cals on it Zeros stop being a problem. Germans build tanks with better cannons and armor then ours? We make out tank crews so survivable and the tanks so easy to manufacture that even if they manage to get a 3:1 kill ratio against us we still win. Iraqis build the worlds densest air defence network? We send the best stealth aircraft in the world to take it out before the Iraqis even realize we're there. If any nation threatens the US military you can count on the Yanks to take their designs up to 11.

    • @n1vg
      @n1vg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably not economical for most civilian uses. The most common figure I can find puts the hourly operating cost at over $11,000. An Air Force report puts it at over $60,000 an hour, which sounds like a figure that probably includes the whole lifecycle cost. A civilian air ambulance helicopter like an EC-135 is about $1,500/hour.

    “And a public address system in the back”. That will win the war for certain! I think the more interesting element is this extends COD type delivery capabilities out to pretty much any ship with a helicopter deck. They can deliver a big engine part directly out to a Destroyer at sea.

    • @phalanx3803
      @phalanx3803 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also works in reverse if there a no air bases near by if need be supplies and fuel could be trucked out to the nearest coast line and load up there. it could also use any friendly ship with with a helicopter deck and ability to re-fuel to perform hops combined with in air re-fulling its range and places it can land is almost unbound.

    • @andrewtaylor940
      @andrewtaylor940 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Phalanx380 I will admit the new Army tilt rotor is looking quite interesting as well. Although I understand both why the Army wants it over the V-22 (much larger blades overcome the Ospreys Disk Loading issues in hover.) and why the Navy can’t really use it (Way too large a wingspan and no possibility of folding for stowage. The Ospreys limitations aren’t caused by its need to be folded up.) The one interesting thing the Army bird did, is as a second gen tilt rotor it simplified the tilt greatly. Rather that tilting the whole engine, thus needing all the connectors, such as fuel lines, control cables etc, to move. It instead just tilts the rotor hub via a not overly complex transaxle. The Jet Turbine Engines stay level. Only the nose and propeller tilt.

The rest of the wing is fixed other than rotating the entire wing/folding the blades for storage/maintenance in smaller areas than can be done in the flight configuration. I worked the USAF variant for six ish years prior to retiring.

    The Navy is right to say that the C-2 can’t carry the F-35’s engine inside its standard shipping container, a bulky configuration that weighs 9,350 pounds. But the CMV-22B, despite its now proven ability to land and take off with a higher gross weight, can’t, either. To get the F135 into the cramped confines of the Osprey’s main cabin, the Navy will need to use a special pallet that leaves the engine exposed to the elements, including corrosive salt-filled sea air and water. Ground crews will also need to remove certain external aircraft components to prevent them from being damaged during loading and unloading and then reinstall them before the tilt-rotor can get going again, which makes the entire process take longer.

    I'm a fan and supporter of the Osprey, but it has to be said that the C-2 Greyhound it's replacing can hit 343 knots (compared to the Osprey's 280), and has a 1,300 nautical mile range (compared to the Osprey's 879). And the Greyhound has a significant parts commonality with the E-2 Hawkeye, especially the engines, which significantly reduces logistics and maintenance issues.

    • @AA-xo9uw
      @AA-xo9uw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has to be said that the CMV-22B has added fuel capacity. It also has to be said that the C-2 cannot refuel in flight, unlike the CMV-22B.
      There are hundreds more V-22s in service than there are E-2s so your logistics and maintenance issues argument is moot.
