    This is, BAR NONE - the best calibration video for a Sigma lens I have seen. Thank you for pointing out how to achieve the correct distance from the camera to the target using the lens' display window. If you have a Sigma lens, get the dock and follow the steps in this video. NO shortcuts!

    Tip: the reason for the fold down section in the middle of the paper guide is that when you have that perpendicular to the lens and in the center on the view, you can autofocus on that flat surface instead of trying to focus on the 0 which is not perpendicular. The center part It is folded at the 0 mark for you. Then you look at your photo to asses focus you can then use the scale to the side to make your adjustments.

    Useful tips, but that "calibrator chart" or whatever we may call it, it has to be used with that QR code part unfolded, it is meant to focus on that QR code with your lens, this is your focal plane and it has to be a perfect 45 deg angle with the ruler. Folding it, you actually are creating a false or slightly off focal plane which is resulting also in a much smaller target to focus on.

    Hi, how did you calibrate the infinite setting if you don’t mind explaining. I calibrated my 24-105 at all the indicated distances (red lines in Sigma tool), but I’m wondering about infinity. If I put the calibration thingy at, say 100m, I might be able to focus on it, but there is in no way enough detail in that image to judge back or front focus.

      @alejandrofacal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, you have the possibility to increase the global focus. I mean that you have two types of adjustment, within the fine adjustment section (in nikon and canon). One setting is the global one (which affects all lenses equally) and the other is the individual setting for each lens. I suggest you increase the global to +5 (to gain 5 steps) remember that this will affect other optics you have calibrated, so you should subtract -5 from each optic that needs it. I hope you find it useful!

  • @sethshaffer8592
    @sethshaffer8592 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi wouldn't you focus on the flat portion of the calibration kit? Would that not be the 0 on the ruler?

    • @FitsandFun
      @FitsandFun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, think of the slope as say the tip of a nose vs someones eye. They are different distances away, so the slope represents the depth of field, and using the zero on the slope allows you to pin point the depth you want your focus. So if you focus on the zero on the slope and the 1 is what is in focus, you'd really struggle to get someones eye in focus from that distance. So the slope is the key to calibrating the autofocus points.

    • @sethshaffer8592
      @sethshaffer8592 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hmmm so the flat portion is not the portion you focus on then? I assumed the 0 and the flat portion was the same thing. You would focus on the flat portion and take an image. Then look at the ruler to see if it was back or front focused.
      I just ordered the same kit you are using off amazon for $5.50. I have noticed that my images aren't as tac sharp as I want them to be, I am guessing I am having front or back focus issues.

    • @FitsandFun
      @FitsandFun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it would help on the R5. Because that's using dual pixel auto focus, the dock calibrates the lens to the viewfinder where you manually select the focus point and then calibrate to that specific point in the optical view finder. So two different focusing methods. Again, I don't think it would work, but I don't know for sure.

      I agree, I didn't know either when I first purchased the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. I don't know of anyone who does this as a service because it's unique to your specific camera body. But a lot of people just copy my settings and they said that it worked well for them.

    Let me correct you.
    If your lens is BF back focus you need to bring it closer to 0 in the scale. Meaning you need to MINUS it so it come closer to 0 and not increase PLUS. otherwise itd be more back focus.
    For front focus FF you are to do the opposite.

    I think you are doing it wrong and you are sharing misinformation.
    1) You should be focusing on the QR code, not the 0 mark.
    2) Your camera doesn't seem to be at level with the target. If it was, your focus point should be exactly in the middle of the image.
    3) At 6:03 you say you don't need measurement devices. Why? How can you calibrate a lens without accurately measuring the distance of the focal plane?!
    4) Of course you didn't have anything off. You moved the target until it was sharp in the photo instead of fixing it at the calibration distance.
    5) The red bars in the computer software indicate where the focus ring should be positioned. Don't look at the numbers, look at the bars!

  • @dimitrislelekis6943
    @dimitrislelekis6943 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry but this is not what other videos explain about lens calibration. It's not about how precise the zero is, is about how equal the gradation is in terms of focus. The 1/2 in your experiment, should be the same amount of out of focus, which is not, because you emphasize on the zero. This is the same to just shoot a teddy bear and compare microadjustments till you see the eye in perfect focus, doesn't work that way, that's why the calibration kits have rulers.

    • @FitsandFun
      @FitsandFun  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like I said, this is how I do it. And this works great for me. I'm not forcing anyone to do it this way.

  • @stefanputureanu9296
    @stefanputureanu9296 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    You're doing it wrong. You need a ruler and then measure 0.28m from the sensor of the camera (there is a mark of that on every camera) to your object you are focusing on, than measure 0.35m and so on.

    • @FitsandFun
      @FitsandFun  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Worked for me

    • @falcon56215
      @falcon56215 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t think he’s doing it wrong. This is basically adjusting where the autofocus lock thinks the lens is focusing vs where the lens is actually focusing. The actual distance from the sensor to the object is not critical... as long as you are in the ballpark of the scale for the four focus points in the sigma software you should be fine. Obviously the closer you are to the scale the better the calibration, but using the scale on the lens should work nicely and be much easier. You are not calibrating the distance scale in the window of the lens.

    • @dbauernf
      @dbauernf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@FitsandFun It worked because you were close, but Stefan is correct, it should be EXACTLY that distance from the marking on the camera body to the target.

      Even having to do all that, many people still believe it's the best lens out there for a crop sensor camera. It really is unique with its fixed f1.8 aperture, and the image quality for video is unmatched, especially in that price range. It does not need to be calibrated for video use, or to shoot photos in live view mode.
