For The Fallen - Hayley Westenra - Festival of Remembrance 2010 (HD)

- In the presence of Her Majesty The Queen, Hayley Westenra ヘイリー 海莉 sings the World Premiere of the hymn "For The Fallen" composed by Karl Jenkins, at The Festival of Remembrance. The reading is by Bernard Cribbins. The performance took place on November 13th 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall in London and was broadcast on BBC 1 TV and BBC1 HD the same day.
Here is a transcript of the introduction to the performance by BBC announcer Huw Edwards:
"In the final year of the Second World War, a young airman lost his life on a mission over Berlin. It was Pilot Officer Alfryn Jenkins, whose nephew is the eminent composer Karl Jenkins.
For this year's Festival Karl Jenkins has composed a new musical setting for Binyon's timeless words, For The Fallen; it is dedicated to his uncle's memory.
As we prepare to lay the Altar of Drums, can we please give a warm welcome to Hayley Westenra and to Bernard Cribbins, thank you."
Here are the words, by the English poet Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), as performed on this occasion:
With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.
Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

This is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. Very moving. Hayley's performance was perfect - the high note at 3:22! Bernard Cribbins delivered his speech with such excellent expression. I'm a very proud Hayley fan right now!

the festival of remembrance is something my mum and I watch each year and this part of the service were they set out the drum alter always makes us cry, I'm a very proud British citizen and I am forever thankful for our servicemen and women who fought, died and survived to let us live free and in peace

@Arnetsew It is a tradition going back for centuries that soldiers in the field, without recourse to their chapels or churches on Sunday, would lay their drums neatly, consecrate them by laying their standards on them, and use them as an altar.

Beautiful, no doubt. Yet, fallen for the sake of what? It's important to think about this issue, in order to prevent, for ever, human disasters and the sacrifice of so many brave men and so great talents for the sake of human madness.

My parents were so proud of our stand. they also remembered with love the commonwealth and the americans who came over before their country declared war. The Europeans who came to support us. And above all they believed that God helped us.
Hang about the CW countries came before the USA decide to show their face get it right. Many souls were lost from Commonwealth countries, India had over a million men sent to that conflict, which you people conveniently forget, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Canada, Caribbean, Sth Africa and many more don't brush the ones that actually propped up you lot, what a load of cheek👎

Incredible, but what a pathetic applause at the end. This was a beautiful performance which deserved far better than this response. Wake up England, and show more appreciation.This young lady is nothing short of remarkable.
To each his own,complete silence would have been a better response than this half hearted effort. Show respect of course, but show appreciation of a performance that was nothing short of stunning.
Roger Shirley; yes, that was a fabulous performance from Hayley. However, to paraphrase your words. Perhaps if you went there you would be able to feel that the atmosphere is subdued and balanced, so the response was just right. There are people attending (including families and serving armed forces personnel) who are grieving for loss of lives in the past, as well as the raw grief experienced by recent losses, so you are the one who needs to "wake up" and realise that people are there (including Hayley) to take part in a remembrance ceremony. There again, perhaps it's better if you don't attend...

@hwivid After further investigation and a discussion in the HWI forum, I have now amended "contemn" to "condemn", which is probably what Hayley sang.

@Medeasbiggestfan As others have said, there is some debate about condemn/contemn. I am currently leaning towards "condemn" but I will not change it until I am sure. We may have to ask Hayley (or Karl Jenkins!) in due course what she actually sang...

As a retired British soldier of 23 years service I find this, although inspiring, quite revolting. The majority of servicemen and women die in wars of choice, very few if any are about defending the country they live because they don't have a country if they're British, that is the province of just a few, the landed gentry headed by the family who's adopted name is Windsor. This Brexit dilemma wouldn't happen in a democracy and the politicians wouldn't even dream of doing what they're doing in a democracy.
