I think that over time Wen Ning has been coming back to himself. When he confronted Jiang Cheng back in Lotus Cove about Wei Ying's giving his golden core to his brother, Wen Ning was decisive and forceful in speech and action. Wen Ning is no longer so shy and unsure around others. I now think that his sister's overprotectiveness towards her brother may have held him back and she didn't realize that a few good friends could enrich her brother's life.
He never died, his spiritual cognition was less than a normal person's cognition due to dancing peri snatching his spirit when he was a child. When Wen Qing begged Wei Wuxian to stop she said that her brother wasn't dead, in fact I doubt that Wen Ning can ever die. (This is my opinion and i may be wrong because i don't know how puppets work) I believe that Wen Ning became some sort of a puppet, always following someone yet being himself, look at how much he clinged to his sister then Wei Wuxian.
