    I built a 401 for my 74 CJ-5. Its unbelievably quick . Just a nice healthy race balanced 401 with 1971 heads and big valves, custom made forged pistons and 9.8:1 compression, oil mods, custom machined high volume high pressure oil pump and nickel plated oil pump housing & timing cover , 1.7 roller rockers , custom ground roller Cam and link bar roller lifters, performer rpm intake , 1" 4 hole phenolic carb spacer, Holley center dump 750 cfm carb , phased & recurved Duraspark distributor , cap adapt with tall rotor big MSD cap , MSD 6al box, taylor made wires, ceramic coated headers, dual 2 1/4 exhaust with 40 series flowmaster dumping just before the rear axle. Custom built hood scoop , velocity stack, aluminum 4 row radiator with contour dual fan conversion , centerforce clutch disc and pressure plate, custom built dana 60 semi floater rear with 4.10 geared power lock diff, custom dana 60 front diff with power lock and 4.10 gears, t18 trans , dana 20 transfer case and rubicon express 4" suspension system with 33" mud terrains . She runs real nice and chassis dynoed @ 384 rwhp and 404 rwtq.

    I'll be honest, after hearing this and being reminded of my grandfather's AMX he keeps tucked away other than for Christmas Burnouts and a few local shows and the SC/Rambler my dad just borrowed from a friend for reference to put his back together; You just can't beat that deep sound of an amc 360 or 390/401. Motivates me to work harder so my XJ can remain in my possession till I can make it my Magnum Opus project car with an implanted 360. Love the sound, guys, love it

    After we got the Jeep back from American Muffler I took it to it a mechanic that has alot of experience w/ AMC V-8’s. He fixed that cold-hearted sputter it does at startup.
    It was 28 degrees that morning (that’s COLD for South Texas)

    hey nice jeep I got everything the same with T18 Borg warner and dana 20 on my 76 cj7 ...the only difference is my 360 ....just wondering what headers u got on them ? I'm trying to see what's the best headers for the AMC...

      They're Pacesetter headers w/ the ceramic coating. Looks like stainless & there's very little discoloration from heat.

    I also have a 401 in my 1979 CJ-5 it runs ok but some years ago I had another CJ-5 with a 401 and it was a monster , I'm guessing twice the HP Would like to hear the after . I need to post mine

      If you were running stock headers, do a port job on them and clean out the coolant pathways. Father and friends of mine said the factory heads left a lot to be desired without a bit of handy work.

    That's does sound awesome...do you have any recollection of what lift kit...size you have on that jeep? Any shackle or body lift? Looks like 33" tires. Whatever you have is a good combo.

      You're right, 33x12.50 x15 BFG's on 15x11 US Mags. The lift is a 2 1/2" with some heavy duty shackles. The rear shackles have a couple of extra holes so you can adjust your stance if you want. No body lift. AMC 401, Borg-Warner T-18, Dana 20 T-case, High pinion Dana 44 rear end.
      I'm running 3.55 gears, which is OK w/ the 401, but I think 3.73's would be ideal for the highways in Texas (75 mph speed limits). Not too high, not too low!

    @ Jake Orr--yeah, it was FREAKING LOUD! After we got the headers tied into the exhaust (true duals & glass packs) I kinda wanted that open sound back. I'm the guy in the driver's seat.

    What kind of cam do you have on that beast? Any motor Motifications?!

    • @rlrjeep
      @rlrjeep 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      George Zamora Factory grind on the cam, MSD ignition, Pacesetter headers, Edelbrock dual plane intake, Holley 750 truck avenger carb. I had a 650 carb & a very good Jeep mechanic told me he ran 800 cfm carbs on his 401's, so I bumped it up. Oh yeah--and a chrome dipstick (much faster with that).
