I'm 67...I guess my enjoyment and love of listening to these percussive driven bands started with Santana's 1st Album...My other favorite bands from this era were Osibisa, and War. War's LP's with Eric Burdon were Great, but after he left the music they came up with was extraordinary...The fact that this style of music led me to listen to Bossa Nova, Latin, Soca, etc, etc, music has been one helluva of a wonderful ride!.
@@thomasprete-w5i I'm 67, Mandrill, Santana, War along with Chicago and the early, totally different Kool & the Gang were the groups we listened to. We were also listening to the rock groups Sly, Iron Butterfly, ZZ Top, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Hendrix leading us into the birth of fusion. Back in the 60's for us, taking music lessons and being in the school was it, so we were listening to music we could play along with and not being that interested in the Motown doo wop.
@user-sn3dj9rigt Weren't we lucky. Saw Deep Purple right after the "Live in Japan" came out at Gaelic Park in Upper Manhattan around 73/74...Memory Fuzzy...Opening band "Fleetwood Mac" before Buckingham & The Dark Witch made them over popular & over played and millions...Remember them doing "Black Magic Woman" Christine McVie RIP...Can't tell you how many people over a lifetime that was their song, but Santana did take it to another level
Mind blowing music I listened to in the 70's when we smoked a lot of pot that just expanded the experience even further! you just had to be there! This group was just awesome and musically talented!
I still have their Albums!! Memories of going to “Soul” TV live with Ellis Hayslip as the host…I once went with my friends The Delfonics and met Anna Marie Horseford, and young Arseno Hall at Soul.

You're reminding me of a scorching band here in Annapolis, Maryland "The Clones of Funk". They'd played George Clinton shows, with Chuck Brown, etc. I've been lucky to have known them all; the Clones of Funk's drummer Mark Brown was in my band as well :) Be well, friend. You were young and inspired by the best.

This is THE BAND that started that distinctively New York sound: hard-edge Funk-Rock-Latin-Jazz-World music fusion! No one else like them. They perform all their own original material. Others have copied from and sampled them numerous times. Rock-Funk originals and make great music while delivering a message. Always with positive vibrations, love and energy.

Wow, I remember this show back in the day called "Soul to Soul"...It came on channel 13 here in New York City...... This is definitely a classic.......
Actually, the show was called "Soul!" on the pre-PBS Channel 13, produced and often hosted by Ellis Haizlip, a prerequisite to "Soul Train", in which a number of now famous talent, like Earth, Wind & Fire, Ashford & Simpson, Labelle, New Birth, Jimmy Castor and Black Ivory as well as several poets and Black leaders, got their first television exposure. "Soul to Soul" was the name of the movie released around this same time which featured Roberta Flack, Les McCann, The Staple Singers, Ike & Tina Turner, Wilson Pickett and the Voices of East Harlem doing a live concert in Ghana. It has since be released on CD and DVD with Santana instead of Roberta Flack.
These cats were special back in the day & are still very special in this current era of music. We need more artist with this flare & raw talent. We could most likely find cats in their late 50's playing somwhere in central park n.y. or somewhere in oakland cali. jammin like this. My uncle & his boys would jam like this in his basement & i was @ the tender age of 4 & i'm still hooked. I love my uncle for schooling me as a youth. Charles Padro holds it down on that drum solo like a BOSS. And I love the way his drums each have their own musical “note,” even though they weren’t tuned to a specific pitch. Those old shells just sound different!

Dr. Lou Wilson and much thanks & love for the treasure trove of outstanding music you've left for us to explore.

An amazingly talented and versatile band. An inspiration to many of the funk bands that followed. Underrated and unsung except by those who follow their music.
Mandrill is one of the coolest and most underrated bands ever!! These guys throw down the real funk!! This video is priceless and will live forever! Thanks for posting this soulful piece of music history!!!!

That's true African music. Young brother's today ain't stepping up to the plate like that no more. The drums beats are still calling out to us.
I just came across this video while looking at a performance by EARTH WIND AND FIRE. I was only 3 years old in 1971, so I don't remember this tv show. Mandrill was great. My father had one of their albums. Do you still live in Philly? I was born here and still live here. Thanks Ken
Yes they are still calling. We need to [re]learn the message of the drums. Ah, them horns! Oh that rhythm! I love Mandrill, loved them THEN, love them now. Thank you for sharing!!!
Wow, My Dad used to talk about this band and I had no idea who they were. He was from NY. This is a bad ass find. I had never seen them until now. I only knew of the name my dad mentioned 25 years ago. He had them on an old 8 track tape that got destroyed but he could never find a replacement. I tried to find a copy one year, i think in 1995 , of their work for a birthday gift, but to no avail. He was in the Viet Nam war and he said he played their stuff a lot and wanted to recapture a segment of his youth and his brothers in arms, by listening to them again to bring back fond memories. He was just 20 years old in 1971. R.I.P pops, TH-cam is great. Wow thanks for the upload
DAMN RIGHT! Quiet as kept, as big a Fishbone fan as I am I just couldn't help but notice how much of you guys I hear in their overall sound. It's positively mindblowing! Yeah, Mandrill seriously needs R&R Hall of Fame recognition strictly from an influential standpoint. Would be a major crime if they don't... >;-(
I remember seeing them in Providence, RI @ the Arena. They had a different bass player and they opened up for Ike and Tina Turner Revue. All of this talent for $4.50 at the door. Been a fan ever since. Mandrill-land LP was their best. Peace.
Neftali I remember paying my ^ bucks to see Mandrill at CCNY in Brooklyn and they released Fencewalk and the crowd went bonkers...I too remember those concerts in Central Park with my Yago Sangria and herbs(lol). The last time I saw anyone was about 1977 when i met Omar Ben Hassan in the World Trade Center wearing his all white Muslim garb. He was suprised anyone recognized him I'D LOVE TO SEE ALL YOU AGAIN
Brooklyn's own---MANDRILL! These guys inspired a lot of artists today. Its amazing that they are still around and doing what they do best. Caught a show in Prospect Park a few years back......awesome!
Yes I just recently saw a footage of a concert they did back in 2006 on "TH-cam" and it was a good video..... Amazing that they're still performing... They grew up in Brownsville, Brooklyn as well as Brass Construction....
These guys are great. I was all set to see them play at my high school, Brooklyn Tech, in 1972. The folks had a one word answer for that..."No". I was only 13.
I remember them from when I was a kid, even though they didn't have any hits. Happened to pick up a "best of" CD of theirs back about 10 years ago and really liked what I heard. I have an oldies show that plays a lot of not-big-hits along with hits, and have played "Fencewalk" before, as well as "Hang Loose." Love seeing and hearing this video!

I was there too!!! These youngsters don’t know what REAL music is with REAL instruments.
Yes they are still calling. We need to [re]learn the message of the drums. Ah, them horns! Oh that rhythm! I love Mandrill, loved them THEN, love them now. Thank you for sharing!!!
A great powerful horn bass guitar whole great band
You can't deny the music of

Mandrill is a great band and their drummer it's one of the best I ever seen
man swu guys in nyc in the 70's.....simply the best...are u guys still plaYING???? STILL HAVE ALL THE VINYL..DM LUV THIS GROUP
Great story, sorry your Pop could not get another listen, nowadays u can find everything on TH-cam
For a different "Mandrill" experience, look for "Moroccan Nights".
You and your Dad are very special.
Let Mandrills rolll
DAMN RIGHT! Quiet as kept, as big a Fishbone fan as I am I just couldn't help but notice how much of you guys I hear in their overall sound. It's positively mindblowing! Yeah, Mandrill seriously needs R&R Hall of Fame recognition strictly from an influential standpoint. Would be a major crime if they don't...
>;-(
HELLO,best instrumental I've heard all mornin.
Mandrill one of my favorites, growing up as a young man in the seventies, I was blessed to enjoy such good vibes. Good stuff.
He was suprised anyone recognized him
I'D LOVE TO SEE ALL YOU AGAIN
The "Noise" of today will never become Classics!!!❤
crazy i never heard of this great group. I'm watching old reruns of soul train on aspire and they were a guest along with elton john.
My pops had a few albums by this band and p-funk now I have a lot of music from CD's records and tapes, can't help it I'm a 70's baby😉😉😎
@@ethelstevenslove2957 They arrived from Panama around the ages between 9 and 11 and their parents settled in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, NY.
love Mandrill!! Reminds me of old family records I would listen to!!!!
M-A-N-D-R-I-L-L
YES!! My high school days. They are so talented and sadly UNDERRATED 😥.
Espectacular
Thanks so much Neftali Santiago, can't be topped. PERIOD
As Neftali said it in the "Just Outside of Town" linear notes...Mandrill was ahead of their time...
These guys are great. I was all set to see them play at my high school, Brooklyn Tech, in 1972. The folks had a one word answer for that..."No". I was only 13.
Well I guess... It was a Jungel out there where the trumps Roam and Noone gor home hi5
What a band. I never get tired of watching them...incredible talent.
A gem. Thanks for sharing this video.
Man , I really miss those days of great creative music.....
Great Band! I missed them.
EeeeHooo! had totally forgotten about this group. Incredible. Wish it was like dat now.
Chicago 's first album
was originally released as a
two record set on Columbia
back in 1969.
Tenho este LP,ganhei logo que saiu.Vejam como sou velho. No Brasil poucos o conhecem.Agradeço ao neftalsantiago por este presente.
So awesome. Bring it back!
Wow these dudes could play, bravo!💯👏
