- The FIFA World Cup is hands-down the biggest competition in world football, and perhaps also the most interesting. So interesting that we often wish that the tournament came around more often than just once every 4 years.
But then, why can’t it happen more frequently? Why does the FIFA World Cup only take place once every 4 years? Here are a few reasons.

I don't have an problem with it being every 4 years keeps a huge level of novelty and keeps it special

@@yonggeun4222 that will make the world cup a regular normal competition, nobody is gonna watch if it's not a rare once in a while thing, also the preparation for the world cup by itself takes 4 years, 200 teams have a chance to take part with many qualifying competitions, but only 31 teams make it in.

The Summer Olympics is arguably the second biggest sporting event in the world after the World Cup.
While I am no fan of the Olympics, like the World Cup it is a cultural phenomenon and attracts millions of spectators when the games are on.
The only good thing about the Olympics is that unlike the WC which is obviously football, the Olympics is multi sported meaning there is all sorts of sports and events for people to enjoy.
The Summer Olympics is the one sporting event that comes close to the WC.

Difference between the world cup and other competitions is that even people who don't follow football are interested.
As much as i would love to see it more often, 4 years makes it special. Euro cup is like a mini WC in the meantime.

Honestly I disagree lol. I don't think 2 years would be repetitive at all. Every two years in the U.S we have elections (for house of reps and senate seats) and it still feels like a long time in between each one.

The same reason why every other huge tournament is every 4 years - The Euro and Olympics namely, keeping it special and actually valuable. It used to be hard to get a place in so it was all that extra special but they decided to allow everyone everywhere apparently
It's not just limited to sports. The US Presidential Elections held every four years. In fact most countries have four year political terms. Heck, even our calendar is based on number four i.e. leap years.
The patience just makes the World Cup all so sweeter
I wish it happened more often mainly because of the missed timing opportunities countries have, like if player's primes lined up. Despite that though, the cup just wouldn't be as special if it happened more often.

This World Cup won’t just be unique for being held in the winter and in an Arab nation.
It will also be unique as Qatar will be the first side since Italy in 1934 to host the WC without playing at a previous tournament although Japan who were awarded the 2002 edition with Korea in 1996 made their debut in 1998.
But what makes it more interesting that this will likely be Qatar’s first and only WC finals appearance even with the tournament being extended to 48 teams from 2026.

Because it's never been given as value as world cup. Every continent has it's own champions league equivalent, respect for all those but there can only be one country as champion of the whole world. And most importantly, as said in the video, players can't simply say "we will try again next year"

I think it can be held every 2 years. For the first few points, keep it in the same country with the same teams that qualified. They will already have the infrastructure and ready for it.
4 years is 'ok' but it's a long time to wait. Forget about this "special" value and stuff. It wouldn't lose value. But hey, at least they have the continental tournaments in between.

I was anti 2 years WC. But I think 2 years WC would be great. But the consequences will be on the clubs and players. If the players play less games on their club, the clubs can't make the same money as now, and player's wages will be lower than it is now.

It takes four years for the host country to get the stuff ready for us the fans. Two theirs a lot of work for the individual teams to participate in not only to qualify but be top of their game or no one will watch. I am a huge FIFA fan not their behind the scene political mess but see the athletes play for their home country. It's like the Olympics does to bring unity for the year of the world cup.

1) You are completely wrong. The host is decided way before the previous WC.
2) It can be held every 2 years as long as there is an agreement to make the continental tournament an automatic qualifier to the WC, at least for the top ranked teams at that, with playoffs to the lower teams and for the ones not qualified. It can be held every 3 years with not much trouble.
3&4) Club competitons could be adapted.
5) Not really. You are counting only a few top players that make it to play even 1 WC. Making it less rare would give more players the chance to play at least 1 WC and would represent better each team strenght, instead of being champion for 4 years which is misrepresentative of the changes in each team.

As perfect 4 years may seem, I feel that it's still too long to wait for a tournament. 3 years too me is the most ideal, because it also gives better continuity on where the teams stand in terms of levels. 4 years is too much of a gap to truly measure a national team's true level on a global scale. Too me the world cup is more of a competive sporting festival than an actual measure of a national teams level, because of how infrequent the tournament is.
You're not considering that all 6 continents have to go through the qualification process while dodging club football.
Example: South America can't schedule games when champions league is going on while Africa is Having Afcon at the same time. It's a balance of schedule so you're not spreading players out.
I always thought it was to make the FIFA World Cup separate from the Olympics.
