This question isn’t about “ scandals” that followed either of them. Some people, mostly MJ fans, react harshly, or with lots of anger when that’s brought up. They also then point a finger at Prince, and throw his sexuality into faces of MJ critics. The FACTS are MJ was considered to be the “ King of Pop/rock”. Who spent his life acquiring knowledge of music, and mastering more than 25 instruments. I think they both died horribly early. And both had so much more to give. 2004 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame " While My Guitar Gently Weeps" tribute to George Harrison.Prince did an incredible solo at the end of Let's Go Crazy: also from this movie Purple Rain
I think someone already kinda mentioned this, but the guitar solo you are talking about is from the 2004 Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony performance of The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", in tribute to George Harrison, who was being posthumously inducted as a solo artist that year. Prince was also being inducted that same year. And yes, it was a great, mind-blowing solo for sure, but - and take this from a Prince fan of over 40 years, who was lucky enough to see him in concert 5 times - he played solos equal to, and far more impressive than that one, night after night, in arenas all around the world, for 35+ years. Even at rehearsals and soundchecks. He could play that kind of solo in his sleep. Talent and music flowed from him like water. It looked effortless, although it would be a disservice to him to call it that, because he spent countless hours (and his entire life, really) honing his craft And, while I understand the instinct to compare Prince and Michael Jackson, it really makes no sense. Other than them both being African-American and having the commercial peaks of their careers around the same time, they have hardly anything in common, musically or otherwise. This is not a slight to MJ in any way, but Prince was a serious, overwhelmingly talented musician in just about every way you can imagine. Michael Jackson was a performer. An amazingly gifted one, to be sure, but it's beyond comparing apples to oranges, it's more like comparing apples to lightsabers. Not much in common. Keep digging into Prince's catalog - you have much to discover!
Why would you take Claptons’s word for it… He flips on every guitarist he talks about… He once said EVH, Brian May and Jimi Hendrix were garbage and overrated only to change his mind years later and say that Jimi and EVH were 2 of the greatest ever lol… Prince is a brilliant guitarist and musician, but to say he’s the greatest is a stretch
There's no argument to be had. MJ and Prince are never to be compared. These guys were iconic, legendary and magically independent of each other. Their styles did not even resemble. Prince said years ago that the media started that comparison and he himself didn't see it because they both were in their own space and did not vibe the same.
@@cardman493 yet he had a far bigger impact on the world of popular music. arguably, prince could not have broken through in the way that he did without the work that michael put in all the way from childhood to getting his videos put on MTV. what you listed there aren't exactly measures of greatness, just details in how each artist accomplished their goals. they were equally talented in very different, somewhat overlapping ways. they share influences but express themselves very differently. great, great artists.
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Prince. He did it all playing over 37 instruments, writing well over a thousand songs. His voice range, he danced. Prince is a phenomenal all around artist and master.
I saw the movie in 1984 when it came out. He was like a god to us. I have an original purple album. Never taken out of its sleeve. It's actually a purple album with all the songs from the movie. Forever in my heart. He was amazing live. Canadian Grandma. L.C.
Don’t compare those two brilliant artists...both are outstanding and just think about it, they climbed the charts at the same time...we eighties kids were lucky
What’s even more incredible is that except for a few edits and overdubs, this song was recorded live at a 1983 benefit concert in Minneapolis. It was also the first time Prince and his band (The Revolution) had played it live together on stage.
I find it overwhelming how talented Prince was. The musicianship and his vocal range was out of this world and to know he wrote and produced every single song for himself and many artists is crazy
Prince is amazing! Nobody has more talent than this guy 💜 He changed the music industry and pop culture. You should definitely check out Little Red Corvette or 1999. They're both off his album 1999 released in 1982
If you want to see Prince really shred the guitar live you need to watch “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” video with Tom Petty and others including George Harrison’s son Dhani!! His Super Bowl halftime show was awesome. He was performing Purple Rain in the rain! 💜👵🏼✌🏼
I loved Prince since his first album in '78-'79 and Purple Rain came out when I was in high school. I was always Team Prince, didn't care much about Michael. Prince was overall much more talented than Michael, he played 20+ instruemtns, had an incredible voice, could dance his ass off, produced his music and others, wrote all his songs and many other hits for other stars...he was a true, multi-talented legend. For the style, he was always different but we saw that he could pull off anything and look amazing in it. This look of his is my favorite. Saw the Purple Rain shows twice, phenomenal.
There is no one better than Prince. Excited to see you dive deeper into his amazing songs and performances so I’ll make some recommendations. These are all live performances because I believe that is the best way to experience him. Anything from the 2009 Montreux Jazz Fest shows (my favorites are Empty Room/Elixir, Little Red Corvette, and All the Critics Love U), America, Nothing Compares 2 U from Glam Slam, Shhh from Detroit or Paris, Motherless Child, Play That Funky Music/Hollywood Swinging/Fantastic Voyage, The Question of U, Love Bizarre (with Sheila E from the Parade tour) and, of course, there are many great performances of Purple Rain. 1985 American Music Awards is one of them.
I was a teenager in the 80s, and yeah Prince vs. M J was often discussed. I always liked Prince the best :) I went to see "Purple Rain" with friends in the summer of '84, and the mood in the theater was electric. I remember thinking the movie itself wasn't much, but a lot of great music!!
He changed everything. Listen to guitar legends talk about him. It wasn't just the guitar, all instruments, and gorgeous piano play. Genius, and it flowed out to all of us, gifts to us. Yes, from the movie Purple Rain. RnR Hall of Fame 04, Prince was inducted along w/George Harrison (posthumously) and a release by Rolling Stones' 🎸top list hit, so he performed and well react to that video!! 😅 Also, check out the super bowl half time show, he performs in pouring rain. 💜
This was out of the Purple Rain movie. Check for his Superbowl halftime show where it ironically was raining and they played in it. I'm not sure of the year but the performance you speak of was the George Harrison HOF induction. Really heavy hitter guitar names on stage rhat evening, he finished guitar gently weeps with a solo and his mic drop was throwing tje guitar in the air and walking off at the end.
When you do watch the half time performance be sure to watch his performance from the beginning of half time. Even though it was raining Prince still performed in the rain.
Prince and MJ shouldn't be compared. They were two different artists with different agendas. MJ's goal was always sales. If he had an album sell 10 million copies, he wanted the next one to sell 15 million. That makes sense when you consider that Barry Gordy, who was first and foremost a businessman, was his mentor. MJ would wait 3 to 5 years between albums. He did this because he wanted to build anticipation which would inevitably result in more sales. Prince's goal was always his music and his artistic expression. This makes sense when you consider that his father was a jazz pianist and his mother was a lounge singer. He wanted to get his music out there as soon as he created it. This can be seen in the fact that he released 39 studio albums in a 38 year career, and some of those were double and triple albums. He also wrote and composed several albums for other artists. Yes, sales were important to him, but only in so much as they provided enough money to allow him to continue to make music. He knew some of his albums wouldn't sell as well, but he went where the inspiration took him. This is why he has an acoustic album (The Truth) and a 4 song jazz instrumental album (N.E.W.S.).
Great reaction! Tired of the comparisons; Prince and MJ were to completely different entities. I will just say this, in regards to music making, Prince did it all. In my opinion, Michael and Mercury were two of the best stage performers that ever walked this earth.
I was a teen in the 80s. Watching this video again was so bittersweet. Hard to believe that was 40 years ago. Regarding MJ vs. Prince, if you're talking pure musicianship then Prince wins hands down. There's still a vault filled with songs he never released. He was always, always, creating. 🎶
Prince was considered.."super cool", wardrobe and all. This is from the movie, "Purple Rain". Prince was a musical prodigy. He played all the instruments on his first album. He signed with Warner Bros,. when he was still a teen-ager. His father was a musician that had his own jazz ensemble when Prince was growing up. Prince was a prolific songwriter with a huge catalog of work that was never released.
Prince played 25+ instruments and sang in a 6 octave range. Prince was HIM. I love MJ as well, but Prince was otherworldly. Please do more Prince. Adore, when doves cry, Erotic City
Prince came across as more than a little weird earlier in his career, when he cross-dressed and sang more or less exclusively about sex, in a hyper-sexualised way. But by Purple Rain, (and the album before it), he had switched it up and presented himself and the band as a cutting edge New Wave band, at least in terms of fashion. Meaning yes, they looked very cool at the time. He was aiming for an MJ-sized crossover and reached it with Purple Rain - the movie and the album. (Then he quickly abandoned it and did whatever he felt like for the rest of his career). This is a scene towards the end of the movie, and I think you have to watch it to fully appreciate the powerful effect this song had on the audience. As a semi-autobiographical rock’n’roll movie it still holds up - it’s how Prince was finally presented to households all over the world. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed - the live show scenes alone are worth the price of admission.
Singers and musicians based on a true story. Find the Super Bowl where he was halftime show in the pouring rain for real playing his guitar he was known for his clothing style and his high heeled shoes. He only stood like 53. The only time I went to a movie and at the endof purple rain the whole audience gave him a standing ovation!
You need to watch the movie this is from - "Purple Rain" - supposedly semi-autobiographical. The music is amazing, and Prince proved he isn't "just" a musician; those acting chops are there, too. This is the climactic scene where he redeems himself, and the audience doesn't yet know what to expect.
Prince and MJ are the best in their own right. MJ will forever be the "King of Pop" and Prince.... well, he was the best at the kind of music he played. Besides ALL the music for the movie Purple Rain, he also performed most, if not all the music for the movie "Batman" starring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and Kim Basinger. Prince always had a thing for the color purple and his attire was questionable to say the least, but blended well with the type of person he was. It's like.... once you get to know him, you forget about what he's wearing because it's just "him". Prince and the revolution later became just "Prince", and then later he changed his name to a symbol and called it "He". May I interst you in a reaction to a Finnish band named Nightwish? Back in the early 80’s there was a “New Romantic” vibe where the ruffle shirt worked, for some. Prince, Adam Ant, Duran Duran, a few could pull it off. It took balls and we loved them for it.
You should watch his Superbowl halftime show. The one time it has ever rained and it was for Prince. My favorite all time halftime performance. This part of the movie really caught you up with his music.
I was a teen when this movie came out, and it was really influential for my generation. His clothes & look went with his off-beat music. Nobody else sounded like him at the time. And yes, he was an outstanding guitarist and songwriter. He remains one of my top 10 musicians of my life.
Hi guys...New Subscriber...and yes a female former Army Officer...(Hence Veteran on TH-cam LOL)...I idolised both MJ and Prince...and still DO (R.I.P Superstars & thankyou SO SO much for the joy and happiness your "Craft" brought and continues to bring us with your remarkable and EPIC Songs 😢🫂💙🙌🙏xx). For me, BOTH were Masters of their Craft and both outstanding performers...but without a doubt, Prince was the most talented and unique out of the pair...and it never ceases to astound me just how much of an underrated guitar GENIUS really was !! (He's RIGHT "up there" as one of the greatest one EVER !!) I truly believe that Prince DID as PRINCE wanted...and was way more independant when it came to his musical career...and what i MEAN by that is...He didn't ever want to be MANAGED or controlled...I guess because he insisted on being HIMSELF in every way possible...and being SO super talented, gifted and unique,I feel that Prince just never needed or wanted ANY kind of control being in anyone's hands BUT his own but i never felt that way about MJ..I feel like HE heavily and readily needed managing and have support...I think MJ more than deserved his status being a SUPERSTAR, but nowhere remotely close to being as talented, giifted and bespoke as Prince...I will be eternally grateful to BOTH, who are now in Heaven, for the legacy they left down here on this Gods' Earth...Great reaction..So thankyou & much respect from me to you both.🪖🫂🙏.
As much as media liked to pit MJ and Prince against each other - and they both enjoyed the competition - it’s like apples and oranges for me. MJ wanted to be the greatest pop star of all time, and he achieved it, through prodigious talent and hard work. Prince was more like the ultimate musician, the complete package: Multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, arranger, producer, bandleader, businessman, innovator, advocate for artist’s rights. Throughout his career he nurtured protegés and talented musicians he came across. The man lived and breathed music 24/7. They operated in different disciplines, and became the GOAT in their respective field. Michael was all about pop. Prince was all about music as a whole. Michael was an obsessed stickler for detail. Prince famously wanted to record as fast as possible and move on to the next one. (And it shows in the volume of their output). In some ways they were of course very similar: They both inhabited the music they created in a way very few are able to. And to state the obvious, they were both black artists who yearned and succeeded to cross over in record-breaking ways. In a time when that was still unheard of. After both had passed, it was revealed that they were a lot friendlier than was publicly known - they apparently even hung out sometimes. Also, remember that although they were the same age, Prince would have grown up listening to Jackson 5… Which one you prefer though, is obviously up to you. There’s no correct answer to that one.
You're correct about the vid giving out a "movie type" feel because that's exactly where most of the movie came from. But, I gotta say throw my hat in the ring for Prince being one BADAS* guitarist and one of the very best ever. Wholly underrated to the point that it should've been a crime. C'mon, the dude could absolutely STOOPID shred. But, this cut is arguably the BEST ballad to come out of the 80's. That being said, my personal favorite is the song "It's Only Heaven" by the band Hurricane. Also, Kix's "Don't Close Your Eyes" comes in as a very close second. But, both are definitely worth a que up...
Prince over MJ by far, Prince is a musician, an entertainer, creative, and a showman with a wide variety of costumes. add to all of that the fact that he always surrounds himself with the best on stage, highlights them, and brings them forward like Sheena E. All you really need to do is compare the halftime performance of both. Top it all off with the fact that Prince has a wider vocal range and it is no contest.
Genius! This song takes you to church. His guitar playing is incredible. The lyrics are outstanding. He lulls you into this song, takes you to the Heavens and softly brings you back down. It is surreal. This is from the movie PURPLE RAIN. The whole soundtrack is Prince & the Revolution about a struggling singer/songwriter and his band and how they overcome adversity to make crazy good music. While not a biopic. It had elements of his life, but wasn't fully about him. Check the movie out. As for the outfit. Prince could get away with this. While some may have attempted it out at clubs, it was not something most people could pull off. Adam Ant and some other artists of the era, known as New Romantic also dressed like this to a degree. Prince & MJ are totally different in their styles so it isn't a fair comparison. Prince is without a doubt musically more talented. He can play many instruments and his writing is excellent. Michael was a pop star. His talent in entertaining was without a doubt some of the best performances one could see. He was also a very good writer. I would not even begin to say one is better. They are uniquely different and icons in their own way.
This was from the film Purple Rain (it is what the film basically leads up to.) If you want to see an astounding guitar solo by him check out his cover of While My Guitar Gently Weeps (and yes w/love to see your reaction to that with Prince, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Steve Winwood). I don't want to sound like a "hater" but in answer to your question of who we like better (him or mj) - my vote is for Prince. He taught himself how to play the guitar when he was a child.
MJ was in music business since and famous in his 5 years of age Prince was started as known not famous at his 18th. Prince surpassed MJ in 1984-1985. So who did the most difficult thing to reach the top. its Prince. No further comments do the maths

This is greatness on another level. This movie was an 80s classic. The band in the movie is most of his actual band. In the movie this is where it comes to a dramatic end with the song Wendy and Lisa wrote who are relay his band mates. It’s a music video from the movie of the same name.
Hands down, Prince was the best.

So don’t be haters, learn to love more. Appreciate what each artist brought to the people who loved them!! And still do to this very day! That’s the gift they gave us. USE IT!!💙
2004 Rock N Roll Hall of Fame " While My Guitar Gently Weeps" tribute to George Harrison.Prince did an incredible solo at the end of Let's Go Crazy: also from this movie Purple Rain
Indeed.
@@bertpayne3004 I had to sort of keep it short or else TH-cam will delete comment.Leaving some details & forgetting others
Yes react to it
Thank you for saving us all the time!!🤣🤣
73 years old. Owned this album since its release. One of the greatest guitars ever. His best tune in my book.
MJ and Prince were in different leagues, each dominated their categories, but can”t be compared!
So agree with you 👏
respect
Eric Clapton said Prince was the greatest guitar player he ever heard. This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
Amen 🙏🏻 fuck yeah
Prince 💜💜🎤🥁🎸🎼🎧.#PurpleArmyForever 💯💯🫶🏻
There's no argument to be had. MJ and Prince are never to be compared. These guys were iconic, legendary and magically independent of each other. Their styles did not even resemble. Prince said years ago that the media started that comparison and he himself didn't see it because they both were in their own space and did not vibe the same.
👏🏽
that's right no comparision. Because Michael Jackson didnt play instruments or write iconic songs for other artists.
You listen to MJ at the barbecue... you listen to Prince alone😂😂😂
Prince and David Bowie have more in common than Prince and Michael Jackson
My first concert was Prince with Shelia E!
I betcha that album hasn't got all the songs..... Jungle Love, Sex Shooter, Modernaire are not on the Purple Rain album...
Don’t compare those two brilliant artists...both are outstanding and just think about it, they climbed the charts at the same time...we eighties kids were lucky
Yes we were.
Prince is an animal in his own universe.
What’s even more incredible is that except for a few edits and overdubs, this song was recorded live at a 1983 benefit concert in Minneapolis. It was also the first time Prince and his band (The Revolution) had played it live together on stage.
Prince wrote many hits for other artists; Glamorous Life by Sheila E,, manic Monday the Bangles
Prince was the kind of man that can take your woman dressed like a pirate and in heels backwards. ~ luv, GenX
Prince was a true artist
I find it overwhelming how talented Prince was. The musicianship and his vocal range was out of this world and to know he wrote and produced every single song for himself and many artists is crazy
Prince was Prince, you just didn’t question the process. You just enjoyed the art that was Price.
Prince’s kiss, cream, let’s go crazy, when doves cry are all big hits.

Prince will always be phenomenal, outfits were epic, master of his art. Brilliant man. Thanx so much, peace
Those two didn't care. You did. Let it go. It ruins their characters of who they were.
Me too I’m all for Prince.
@@JaquelineGoodspeedhuh I'm so confused
There's actually no comparison. They both had different styles and they were both absolutely phenomenal.
Yeah, it’s like comparing a Basketball Player to a Hockey Player. Yea they both play sports but it stops there.
Also, check out the super bowl half time show, he performs in pouring rain.
That Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performance was in 2004.
Imagine….the two coexisted in the 80s in their prime. Unbelievable times for music
Prince played 25+ instruments and sang in a 6 octave range. Prince was HIM. I love MJ as well, but Prince was otherworldly. Please do more Prince. Adore, when doves cry, Erotic City
"Let's Go Crazy" has to be next. The Purple Rain album is center of his greatness and sort of branches off in different directions from there.
Prince super bowl. In the rain doing Purple Rain with purple lights. That's the goat of all performances.
Such an amazing song, an amazing movie too!🔥🔥🔥 It is definitely cinematic! But Prince IS cinematic!🔥
Great reaction guys!!👏👏
Prince all day every day.
One of the best artists ever. I was probably around 16 when this came out in 84 85. Everyone loved this song. 😀
Prince was not only cool, but just about the sexiest thing anyone has ever seen
Eric Clapton was asked once what was it like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. His answer "I don't know. Ask Prince."
eric never said that
SPOBI
Ya'll MUST SEE Prince LIVE performance at AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS 1985!!🔥🔥🔥🔥
Prince hands down, as for talent ❤
You really should watch and react to him playing at the halftime show of the superbowl in the rain and singing this song. Absolutely incredible!

Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed.
😊❤️🤘🤘
While my Guitar Gently Weeps - Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2004. Yes, Prince stood out during that the performance.
"As My Guitar Gently Weeps." Yes, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Prince was an amazing performer live. Check out this live version - Purple Rain - Live At American Music Awards 1985. Also if you havent seen his Super Bowl Performance, you are missing out! Great reaction!
Purple Rain is an amazing movie. It has it all. Including a killer sound track with Morris Day.
That outfit was Prince. Glad you two took the time to see him.
So glad I got to see Prince live, when he played this song it was just him and the guitar on stage and it was phenomenal.
So cool!!
It was the George Harrison Hall of Fame Induction that Prince gave that incredible guitar performance.
Gen X here. It's always been Prince! Always, every time. 😮❤
1:37 was from a movie by the same name
Back in the early 80’s there was a “New Romantic” vibe where the ruffle shirt worked, for some. Prince, Adam Ant, Duran Duran, a few could pull it off. It took balls and we loved them for it.
You should watch his Superbowl halftime show. The one time it has ever rained and it was for Prince. My favorite all time halftime performance. This part of the movie really caught you up with his music.
No contest on who was a better artist...it's Prince..!! Watch his Superbowl performance and watch the movie Purple Rain.
His music was transformative.
Prince played purple rain in the rain 1/2 time. Yhe song "As my guitar gently weeps"
I was a teen when this movie came out, and it was really influential for my generation. His clothes & look went with his off-beat music. Nobody else sounded like him at the time. And yes, he was an outstanding guitarist and songwriter. He remains one of my top 10 musicians of my life.
he was the sexiest, most charismatic, confident performer and as far as I know nobody questioned his choice of clothing at all
we just loved it
Hi guys...New Subscriber...and yes a female former Army Officer...(Hence Veteran on TH-cam LOL)...I idolised both MJ and Prince...and still DO (R.I.P Superstars & thankyou SO SO much for the joy and happiness your "Craft" brought and continues to bring us with your remarkable and EPIC Songs 😢🫂💙🙌🙏xx).
Also, remember that although they were the same age, Prince would have grown up listening to Jackson 5…
Which one you prefer though, is obviously up to you. There’s no correct answer to that one.
Prince was one of a kind legends ! No one is like or will ever be him ❤he was a GENIUS 😊 Treat yourself to Greatness he was this! ❤
We accepted whatever our musicians wore. It was about the music they gave us.
I enjoy watching young peoples reaction to songs of previous eras. I dig this.
Prince was a LEGEND!!!!!! From the movie PURPLE RAIN.
Prince most definitely!
An all time JAM!!! One of the best versions was when he did it at Super Bowl halftime and it was RAINING
Prince is the only man that could wear high heels and lace and steal your girl.
The movie was so good that both us Van Halen fans were simply blown away by his performancees especially purple rain
Omg, the twin with the mustache!😊
Prince. Hands down because of the playing ability.
Purple Rain was actually a really good movie !
It was the 80's we had Prince, Boy George, Madonna, George Michael all had a unique look.
Prince ❤ one od the greatest musician of all time.
No fight needed.
BOTH amazing Artists.
True!
I was a little girl around 9 or 10 when this movie came out. I remember sneaking to watch it because it wasn't appropriate for kids, and that's when I first discovered and fell absolutely IN LOVE with Prince!!
One is a pop star one is a rock star. They were the best of their style and era.
Prince set the standard.. music, clothes, etc. He owned that look.
It was the 80's. Nothing was weird!
Yes! Prince was a Phenomenal Guitarist absofrickinlutely!
The older black women where I worked in the 80s said that Michael Jackson was more for young people but Prince was for adults.
Yes, this is so true. My sister is 2 years younger than me and loves MJ; her favorite color is blue. I love Prince and my favorite color is purple. I just realized my sister is over 60! We are getting old😮
This is greatness on another level. This movie was an 80s classic. The band in the movie is most of his actual band. In the movie this is where it comes to a dramatic end with the song Wendy and Lisa wrote who are relay his band mates. It’s a music video from the movie of the same name.
The first half of the song is amazing.... but it’s the 2nd half with the instrumental outtro that sends it into the STRATOSPHERE, what a song
MJ was a performer, Prince was an artist.
Iconic and forever with us...feel the emotions!!!😅❤🎶🎵
