  • 2020 Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid Review: It Doesn't Add Up
    The Suzuki Swift Sport as we know it, is dead. That's because it's recently been replaced with a hybrid version! Well, it's a mild hybrid. The new Suzuki Swift Sport Hybrid still packs the same 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol engine as before, but it now has assistance from a 48v mild hybrid system to give better fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.
    That's sounds great, but there is an issue... It's SLOWER than the old car, yet it costs over £3,500 more. Is it worth it? Check this video out to find out.

    The Swift Sport is a fine handling car. One of the best. No other small hot hatch is lighter (currently) - even this hybrid variant. People are quick to point a finger at the power output. But until you've driven one in anger down a tight and twisty back road. You will not understand just how fast this car can be - point to point. Power output and ultimate straight-line speed is not what this car is about. It's about supremely light weight and a VERY competent chassis that allows you to push on down the roughest of roads carrying high speed. Some reviewers have suggested that the Swift Sport is 'a bit soft' or 'rolls a bit' - as if that is a negative aspect of the car. Well, they are wrong. You DON'T need hard suspension when you have a light car. In fact, it is preferable to make the suspension as compliant as possible for the weight being managed. Some of these journalists need to go and speak to Lotus engineers, or Gordon Murray. Look at the Alpine A110. Universally regarded as a great handling car. It is not stiff. It is soft compared to the German heavyweights... and it does roll a bit in the bends as well. The Germans idea of a performance car is an overweight barge with a huge engine. Of course the car ends up so heavy that they HAVE to stick hard suspension in the car to give it any chance of handling well. Which is at the expense of ride comfort of course. Hammer a German car down a potted tight and twisty Welsh 'B' road, and you'll soon get a headache. Jiggled all over the place as the car struggles to keep the tyres in contact with the tarmac. The Swift Sport is an epic little car, and no-one pays the RRP anyway. There's always deals to be found. Already dealers are offering the car at under £19k.

      Can’t agree more with you, got the non-hybrid model with 16k km on the clock for 15,000€. Have been an Mx5 NB 1,8 driver for the last 20 years and had to “turn” because of the kids. Such a fun car to throw around on a B road. Everybody talks about absolute HP and not power to weight ratio. They also talk about the fiesta which if you are the person that loves his car and holds it for long, then the “made in Japan” argument makes completely different sense... At high speed mountain B road driving the car feels @ home as nothing else (OK apart from the MX-5)... Complains: the gearbox I presume, but don’t forget that I come from an MX5...

      As a 2019 Suzuki swift sport owner, I concur, that nothing much can keep it with it on the road! And, if testers talked about power to weight ratio more often, then we as viewers would have a much more realistic measure to how a car will perform and feel. The Fiesta ST might have 200bhp, but its also 400kg heavier, has less kit, and is way more common, plus the inherent image issue of looking like an Essex boy racer. @carobsession i like your reviews generally, but to go straight into a negative take before even showing us around the Swift Sport Hybrid is disappointing, looking like you wanted to dislike it before even driving it. Cars are subjective, but you already posted your 0-60 time of 8.2 secs, so why then the big drawn-out yawn comment when talking about the officially quoted 9.1secs?

      @@keithparish5863 Absolutely. I know for a fact that the K14C equipped Swift Sport is as fast as a Mk7 Fiesta ST. Also, not known to many - the Swift Sport comes with an adaptive ECU as standard. On 95-octane fuel, the K14C puts out about 155 HP. The Japanese proved that if you run the car on premium fuel - it got another 10 HP!. Putting it at circa 165 HP. Work out the power-to-weight ratio of the car against that figure and you can see how it can match the Mk7 Fiesta ST easily. If you want to feel it for yourself, don't use Shell V-Power or Tesco Momentum 99. They are supposedly 'premium' fuels... but until you've run a tankful of Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 in your K14C Sport - you will not understand what you're missing. Esso's new 99-octane brew is the ONLY premium fuel in this country that contains NO ETHANOL at all. Try it. I ran this stuff in my car and it was like the car had just been tuned - the difference was that stark compared to other premium fuels available in the UK. It's transformed the grunt in the car. Revs out harder, and pulls a lot harder. Give it a go - you will not regret it! Then report back! LOL.

    I tested both and the 1sec is BS... All car youtubers or whatever repeat the same shit and this is starting to piss me off... Did the 0-100 in 7,5... And tbh, to buy a city car for the 0-100 is kinda dumb anyway.. On curves, she is simply fast, like super fun/fast... And the price is up because of the MANY options they added, wich is quiet normal i think.
    To summ up, fun car, great look (ppl ask about it on street, and at least you can find your car on a parking lot) lower fuel cunsumption than previous one with same fun. 10/10

Yeah, you're right, it does have a lot of options, but do you know think that £21,570 for a Suzuki Swift is a bit excessive, Sport version or not?

      @@CarObsession Hi, i understand you guys have to quote what the official times are, but don't you think that the first job of a journalist is kinda to give the truth to futur customers? To do that, really test by yourself the point you're talking about in the video. For the price, i'll talk in euro but from the last model it raised by 1K euros for all the options added. No one buy a new car with the price tag, you always cut 10/15% of that price easy tbh. I'm more shoked of people bying a 30K polo gti with the interior downsizing since the diesel gate. And people do often compare the Swift with the Polo or the Fiest wich is ridiculous, knowing that there is like a 7k>10k euros difference.
      At the end, this is just a car, either you like it or you're just attracted by another one wich i completely understand, but people, specially in the UK i think, don't know much about how suzuki is world known as one the best engine manufacturer! Anyway talked about some youtube in general, no hard feelings mate still appreciate the video, cheers.

The reason why the Swift Sport gets compared to the Fiesta ST is because in the UK they are a very similar cost, and many (including me) would argue the ST is the one to choose.       Actually despite the higher cost when new (at similar spec), the Fiesta ST is the same price or cheaper in the UK because of how common it is.

    I have driven lots of car and I tried the Suzuki Swift Hybrid sport the other day and it felt a lot more than 130bhp.

    I quite understand your review. This is my take on it: Come 2035 I'm pretty sure the powers that be are going to relent and allow Hybrids to continue being manufactured (infrastructure and battery production will not be able cope with nationwide EV by that time). That would mean by then all combution engined cars will end up being at the very least; a mild hybrid. Your video has proved that if this happens and all manufacturers follows Suzuki's lead, life will still be bearable. Well done on showing us the future!

    Good review ad very informative - thanks for your time and effort. I bought one of the last naturally aspirated Swift Sports in 2017 for £10K with 1105 miles on the clock. Fantastic car, which loves to be thrashed. The engine has real character too - NA FTW :)

    Excellent video, I really enjoyed it. They Hybrid car is just a marketing thing and getting around government restrictions. There expensive to buy and even more expensive to repair. Hence the increased insurance costs.

    Great video, keep up to the good job!
    I've always been fascinated by fun hybrids, especially ones with manual transmissions. I guess it's the combination of the geek and petrolhead in me. I had a Honda CRZ previously and though it is slow, it is actually quite a fun sporty car. I love the looks but the lack of usable rear seats made it quite impractical. The manual Swift hybrid was the next best thing but now with the Sport hybrid I am very tempted to get one myself. Granted it is a very specific niche, correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think there are other manual hybrids out there?

      @@CarObsession As far as I know only Honda and Suzuki have been making manual hybrids for years. Others like Mazda and KIA are only just starting to offer them in their lineup. Lots of other mild hybrids but I think they're all automatics.

    Hi , i'm living in Belgium
    I bought this Swift Sport Hybrid 1 month ago, yes the normal price with the yellow color flash is almost 27.000€, so its very high here in Belgium
    As because i have signed the contract in February, i received advantages : 4000€ and they offered me some stuff
    So at the end the final price was 23.000€
    In terms of insurance, each month full insurance is 86€, taxes is less than 20€ per months
    About the sensations (i have never tested the non Hybrid) are amazing with the battery charged, it gives you a big boost in acceleration
    The average in benzine is for me 5,8 L/100 km, knowing that its my second car for pleasure and i don't drive it each day
    For me, even the price and this mild hybrid, i'm fully happy of my choice

    on hybrid cars it is normally only told the regular engines power without the electric motor. I assume the new 0-60 time told by Suzuki was also with the regular engine with no use of the electric motor. the hybrid version has already been tested and it needs between 7,0 and 7,3 sec from 0-60! I also drive the none-hybrid version with a fuel consumption of 5,0 litres every 100 km in the city which is quite good!

      @@SeentySeen As far as I know the overall power (gasoline engine + electric motor) together delivers the same power, but it is 50 kg heavier and i recently read that the hybrid turbo is even smaller. The hybrid offers a bit more torque in the lower rev range and feels more happy there than the none-hybrid version which felt a bit more powerful in the higher revs. Suzuki claims the 0-60 time of the hybrid version to be a second slower but the top speed to be the same (210 kph).

    I’ve been interested to see what the Hybrid is like, had a non hybrid Ss since October last year and it’s a great little car to be fair, the power and torque are plenty for it’s weight and it must be said that a simple remap can unlock quite a bit more. The hybrid is a result of emissions rules and although it makes less peak power it will have the same urgent midrange that is what makes it feel quick on the road. Worst things about the swift are the thin paint which chips too easily and the gearbox which seems to like jumping out of gear when changing and doesn’t like being rushed either!

      You make a good point about the paint chipping - the car I had been given had done about 400 miles (from memory) and already there were three stone chips, all of which were on the nearside rear door, bizarrely. Thanks for watching.

      David, I'd get your gearbox linkage checked out. I've owned a 33S since new in 2018. The gear shift is sweet. It has never jumped out of gear - ever. It's slick and glides in beautifully - as fast as I can swap cogs - it just glides in.

    I enjoyed your review, a bit more honest than most, I recently bought the Hybrid 1.0 Boosterjet , and it is a great fun car to drive with the added advantage of when you want to drive like a grandma its very very economical. Let's be honest, if you keep within the speed limits, the mild hybrid comes into its own, allowing you to punch out of those windy B road corners with no discernible turbo lag and yet keep to well over 50mpg plus the smart blue Hybrid badge does make you feel a little more eco friendly. My reason for not opting for the sport, was simply that I felt it would be much to much fun to drive and therefore the main reason for wanting a Hybrid (mpg) would disintegrate, you just can't drive it like a grandma, the sheer nimble handling and cornering ability makes you want to push on to the next corner, and the next and the next..

    Nobody would dream of the Fiesta ST being a hybrid, so I really don't know what Suzuki are doing here. Hybrids suit auto/CVT SUVs etc and larger saloon cars, not hot hatches. Tomfoolery indeed

      Car Obsession Next generation of cars will be nothing like what we have today, and I think they will become more expensive as well as the technology advances. Hey, we might even get into a situation where we are not allowed to actually own the cars, all just rented to guarantee the dealers a permanent income stream. Hang onto the turbos while you can.

    As a happy K14C driver, with some nessesary mods, like Bastuck exhaust, MPS software, KW suspension, strut bar, Forge intercooler, wheels/tyres..., this is the perfect lightweight pocket rocket track tool under the radar.
    The new K14D is no me gusta, less power, more weight, thats the wrong way, please ask Gordon Murray how to do it right!!!

      Alex, run the car on Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99. The adaptive ECU in the Swift Sport LOVES it. Esso's new brew contains NO ETHANOL. Trust me, Shell V-Power or Tesco Momentum 99 is not a patch on Esso's new brew. Just changing to this fuel alone transformed the grunt in my car. It revs out harder, and pulls a lot stronger.

    Agree with you, Suzuki have created a car that really isn't worth it, you'd just get a 2nd hand swift sport, cheaper and faster. Not sure what their logic is here.

    Suzuki have to get emissions and mpg down across their range to meet regulation and avoid EU fines. That explains the modifications and the high price. Great video btw.

    Hi, I finally bought it .... I could not have made a better choice, great little car, very fast, and with low consumption ... The only thing, when a review is written, I would like the truth to be told. ..This car covers 0-100 in 7.4 seconds (source Zeperfs), and I only realized when I tried it in a test-drive, that the 9.1 given by Suzuky was not true ... Compared to the previous model thermal, the differences consist only in the different delivery, the hybrid reaches up to 5000 rpm, the thermal ones to 6000 ... For the rest, they are practically the same car, indeed at the bottom, the hybrid is more ready and quicker than the thermal .. .😊

      Car Obsession before 2012 I always got my cars second hand. I had a mad moment on a Sunday and ended up at a local VW dealer, and since then ive only got new cars, simply because I became addicted to the feeling you get when you go into a showroom. Cost me a lot over the years. Anyway, point is, I have an odd theory. I would be happy to get second hand cars again, but im always suspicious of cars that are only a year old with less than 5K on the clock. Most are on PCP deals, so why would someone knowingly lose a lot of money to get rid so quickly? I always think, whats up with it ? Has the owner traded it in because it developed a fault that cant be fixed such as a nasty rattle from the dashboard etc or something else such as an intermittent issue with the engine etc ? Makes you wonder.

    It looks like some dealers are offering the Swift Sport Hybrid new at or around £18,499 (including the first year of VED for free) which is a huge discount back down to about the RRP of its predecessor, with some very low mileage examples being a little cheaper still, however there's no reason why you shouldn't at least look for the non-Hybrid version - the cheapest I've found on AutoTrader is a privately-owned two-year old example in blue, 20K on the clock, located near Harrogate, for £11,500. That's *ten grand cheaper than RRP* and still £7,000 less than the discounted new model. If you're a purist and don't mind losing a bit of kit, you can expect to pay about £8K to £9K for a decent 2016 or 2017 Swift Sport (with or without Nav). Of course, they won't be covered by the manufacturer's warranty, but it's not as if Suzuki makes horribly unreliable cars.

      @@stephandolby I paid £10,500 for a 2016 EX Demo with 3,500 miles on it in 2017.
      Now that's a bargain.
      Can sell it now and recoup 7-8k of that cost , inflation and depreciation adjusted it's the cheapest car I've ever had.

      @@CarObsession Fiestas are great cars short term. Trouble with Fiestas is the 1 litre ecoboost engine. They are not long lived and can be troublesome. See reviews on you tube.

    This car might not make sense or "add up" in all markets. However, it does add up somewhat here in Japan. A mild hybrid system really shines in extreme slow stop and go traffic conditions often found in Japan where the car can just run electric . As you pointed out in the UK (as well as most of Europe), this might not add up. Even here in Japan, it mostly adds up in heavy urban areas .

    More manufactureres are victims of the new emissions regualtions and Suzuki have been stung as the range of vehicles if they emit over a certain value they get stung by the regulators hence why the mild hybrids to bring down emissions. Sad but expect to see more of this happening. One thing that is great about this type of sporty hatch is that you can get much more out of its potential than many other high performace cars as conditons and speed limits on roads are eroding elements of fun. Seems regulators didslike sporty cars and 4x4, they want to suck the fun out of driving.

      Let's not be naïve - regulators are simply trying to cut reliance on foreign oil and reduce emissions. Sports and 4x4 is where the worst consumption is.

    Much prefer the old 1.3 gti they did. Looked better & probably sounds better than this. I would go for a second hand CR-Z. My misses has one & it's great fun to drive but, looks faster than it really is 🤩🤩 & only 20 quid tax🤩🤩

      Hi there, thanks for watching, and thanks for the question. It's a good question as each car has its own likeable character traits. I'd say the 595 is more enjoyable and has more character, but the Swift offers better value, is more practical and would be nicer to live with. On that basis, I think I'd probably have the Swift Sport, but the 595 would be more of a hoot.

    Great review! I've got a 2018 SZ5 auto Swift which has 20 bhp less than this new Swift, but weighs much less. It is so much fun and can best be described as 'nippy'. I just cannot see how or why anyone would pay £6k more for an extra 20 bhp. My Swift also comes laden with all the tech and driver aids as the Sport, so from a price point of view this new one makes no sense

      It's probably better compare differences in Percentage. New Sport differences over the SZ5, 18% more HP, 10% heavier and 47% more Torque. That being said I would buy a Used non-hybrid Sport. I have a 2018 Swift Sport (had from new Jan 2018) and couldn't be happier and still love it. At least in Australia the 2020 Series II will still get the non-hybrid.

    I love the look of the sport but l cannot get why maufacturers want to hybridize the sporty variant of the line up.Surely adding more complexity and weight to your sports version defeats the object of the exercise...

      Hi Paul, thanks for watching, and for commenting. All manufacturers are under constant and strong pressure to bring down their emissions for their cars and there are quite hefty fines if they don't do it. Suzuki had to drop the brand new Jimny in Europe because of it.

      @@CarObsession i get all that too but a lighter less complicated car would weigh less and therefore burn less fuel too. The original ethos of the sports car was less weight.We are all guilty for wanting pointless tech and gadgets in our cars,that hurts performance and economy.The jimny's biggest problem was Suzuki engineered it with an old fashioned ladder chassis like the previous one instead of a lighter monocoque chassis.Its great for off road but its weight means it guzzles fuel and its too small an engine too.

    Looking at this compared to my 2013 sport it doesn’t make sense, I’m getting 49.3mpg, it’s faster than the hybrid, it’s an NA 1.6 so is hopefully more responsive, it’s lighter, I was going to say more fun but they’re swift sports they’re all fun. To me this car doesn’t make sense but if you need a new car maybe it does? The negligible difference is running costs and lack of speed (I track my swift) just means it doesn’t make sense. I’ll take my 2013. The 2018 car is a different story.

    What Suzuki should of done: add a slightly bigger battery and a more powerful electric engine so you offer 150hp and around 260nm. You would have a faster car and better fuel economy!!! And you can also offer it with optional AWD and you have a all weather bargain pocket rocket

      So, it would make the car more expensive, and even less people would want to buy it. More power and an all wheel drive system will push the car closer to £30,000 and let's be honest, who is going to pay that much for a Suzuki Swift?

    You say it is expensive. Yes it is, but its a bargain compared with the new Toyota Yaris hybrid, which for the basic one is £20k. I don't think that the Yaris is better built. Both are built with cheapish materials. But I would say Suzuki is equally as reliable as Toyota and probably better to drive.

      @@CarObsession Hello, You are perfectly correct, but I still think they would both be on a potential buyers shopping list especially when you consider a basic Suzuki mild hybrid being only 13k. The Toyota is more fuel efficient, but if I were purchasing a new small car, my money would go on the Suzuki. In general all small cars are overpriced (apart from Dacia!) You can get a used Lexus UX for the same price as a mid range new small car. Thanks for a great You tube channel.

    Climbing on the hybrid bandwagon. As you say, the economics of this cheap hatchback do not add up. I'd rather buy a car designed as a hybrid from the ground up (Prius, CT200, Niro etc.) or a full electric.

    Too much focus on 'pricing and 'speculation' on costs - everyone drives differently - the car makes total sense from a fun factor doesn't it? I'd even venture that its actually value for money! With other brands you have a lovely price list to keep upping the final price you end up paying! - Suzuki gives you adaptive cruise control, automatic breaking, even lane control!!!! Come on - the price is really NOT as bad as you make out. Try adding all that into a Focus ST or Polo Gti (if it's even available).

      The thing is Flint, it's difficult not to focus on the price when you consider the non-hybrid version was a fair bit cheaper, and you got the same level of kit and it was actually faster - so that in my eyes is a no-brainer, especially as from memory the Hybrid isn't THAT much more economical.     I probably give up my Swift Sport and go for a Yaris GR if I can get one .... the Swift is a great car, but the Yaris will probably be one of the last "real" sporty and affordable cars. Life is too short not to grab one of them. I agree with this hybrid version doesn't add up at all ...

    Your review does not make a great sense... the new one does not have only hybrid as an added value. and.. you compare the street price of the old one to the list price of the new one. That's not correct. I paid in italy 20000 euros, for this version. The official price was more than 24000. So WHAT ??? looking at real life paid prices your review stop immediatly to make sense. Even because here, i pay HALF of taxes for the new version. So basically i pay exactly the same amount of money of the old version, i get a sligtly better fuel mileage, i get HALF taxes paied per year, and same ensurance. And heiii!.. the car performs exactly as the previous one. The middle torque improvement make the new version even better on daily driving.. so what ?

      Well, headline power figures have got nothing to do with it. Calculate for power to weight. The Swift Sport just happens to be one of the fastest cars down a 'B' road. It is every bit as fast as a Fiesta ST. In fact, I think the Swift Sport actually carries speed down a bumpy, tight and twisty 'B' road better than a Fiesta ST. It's approx. 200 Kg lighter and the suspension is slightly more supple - meaning it can consume tarmac at speed very easily. Forget 0 to 60 MPH. That doesn't mean anything when it comes to a back road blast. Trust me - a Swift Sport is VERY QUICK down any back road.

      You don't need a lot of power to go through corners fast, you need lightness and a good frame to do so
