Ironically, nowhere in scripture is tithing referred to as a "principle". Biblical, systematic (required) tithes were specifically purposed within Israel towards the Levitical theocracy, the poor, and for sharing and consuming at the festival(s). That's taxation. And money wasn't received as a systematic tithe deliverable although it's evident money was widely traded and wages were earned during those times. Today's version of tithing carries no biblical precedent so it can't be seen as biblical obedience but there's nothing wrong with choosing to tithe, money or otherwise, to a church or otherwise per one's discretion.
