From 1986 to 1990 I was the Military Airlift Command Liaison Officer (MACLO) to III MEF and made many jumps with the Marines on Ie Shima Drop Zone. That coral runway that appears under the edge of the ramp of the Herk is very rough. My main harness, emergency parachute pack and the flight suit that I wore were ripped to shreds when I was dragged down that runway by high winds on my last jump.
Thank you for your service. I never figured out who was responsible for climate planning. Marines order an available aircraft for a jump. Air Force, Reserve, C-130, ANG, C-141 or many helicopters. Neither the Marines or our Airborne ride knew about wind direction.. Correct me Sir, we get jump wings and Benning never instructed us about dragging. Welcome to the club. We had quick release.
