Texas Black Rat Snake. He's not dangerous, but he can kill your chickens. We had 2 chickens killed by one, they can't actually eat them, but they try and fail. The best thing to do is remove it, they are not venomous, and are good for the woods ecosystem. Relocate him to the woods. Don't kill him.

We love rat snakes! They are very important to our farm because we have a lot of mice in the barn. I have to admit, when I first saw one on our land, I screamed. For a full minute. I had to really change my mindset because snakes have a bad reputation. After learning about them, I felt more comfortable. I can even remove them myself (using a long stick with rope that my husband made for me). They absolutely love to eat the eggs so in the spring and summer I have to run upstairs every hour (in between my clients appointments) and take any eggs into our house Snakes can smell eggs so well, and you're correct, they absolutely can strike chickens and we don't want that. I'm so sorry two of your chickens were killed. Thanks for the comment! We are enjoying reading them and connecting with people.

@@farmchronicles2964 Can you snake proof the chicken coop instead? Or do hens lay randomly throughout the day? (I seriously don’t know.) Having to race down every hour seems like a lot!
Snakes do so much good for the environment! Thank you for learning about them instead of killing them. Can you drive them to an open field by a creek?

@@farmchronicles2964 - Big one there. I had a 6' long one in my big coop. I wondered where all the eggs had gone. Well, the girls started laying in their smaller coop in the corner. I found a bunch of them there. The snake came back the following week and got the eggs in that coop as well. He was living under my house for several years, but he might not be able to fit through the thin slit in the cinder blocks anymore that he used to use.

Normally I don't mind rat snakes or chicken snakes or corn snakes around the farm because they do eat venomous snakes , mice and rats from time to time.
But once they get in the chicken coop and they realize that's where the food is it's time to get rid of them

They can bite and cause harm but they’re not poisonous so that made me feel a lot better. I’ve been able to catch them and pull them away from the coop but I just don’t have the heart to kill them. The first time I ever saw one I screamed for a full 30 seconds. I’m getting better but they startle me.

Return him to a better place as black snack kill poison snakes, rates and mice. Put some of that real tiny wire around your coop and any hole that he can get through. Hope that helps.
