Greetings from Houston, six hours behind, where your first video of the day is always a great start to my mornings! You make any pedal sound sweet and lyrical.
What a lovely melody as the head of the opening improv! Is that a known tune that's just unknown to me, or did you improvise it? If the latter-it's definitely a keeper! -Tom
Hi John, great playing as always! I know you also tried the Donner Dumbal. Thoughts over that one vs the Taichi? Thinking of simply having both being that they are so reasonably priced.
I have a Bantamp ( zombie) with a dedicated board that features all Joyo. I have the Preamp house as well and run into the return and then headphone jack out to pa.
It seems only strat or tele players are obsessed with the Dumble sound which thicken up single coils. It's nothing amps like Fender Bassmans or tweeds haven't figured out 60 years ago and in my opinion do a better job at it. The Matchless amps can do something in similar ball park as a Dumble for single coil guitars.
100% - it took me trying humbuckers with one to figure that out. Maybe stacking a boost into the zendrive with a Strat might yield similarly decent results?
Check out the demon FX Z-drive clone. VERY close to the Zen drive. Ethically questionable, but people who are buying those were never going to fork out £250 on a pedal anyway…
I still don't get what Dumble drive is supposed to sound like. I have a JHS 3 Series Overdrive, which is supposed to be a Dumble drive sound also. Depending on the amp (same cab), the response and sound are vastly different even if it's just clean when I use the 3 Series OD.
Well - the Zendrive specifically is probably a good reference point given that Robben mostly uses it instead of his actual Dumble drive channel. Robben has tended to use a blackface style clean so that's probably the sort of clean amp that is going to get closest to that particular vibe?
Each dumble amp built was different so even Alex Dumble himself couldn’t speak from beyond and tell us what dumble tone means. It’s nonsense is what it is.
Has anyone actually got one? A friend overseas has done a couple of QC captures of his actual Dumble - I find it hard to enjoy captures/profiles as much when I wasn't there to actually make them or no what the end result should have been if you know what i mean?
I can get that sound with other pedals, or Guitar Rig, I don't get it. It just sounds like any other type of milder distortion to me. A lot of Robbin Ford's sound lies in his guitar choice which is usually a semi hollow body. I owned a 355, nothing else like it. I could get notes to sustain to the point where my guitar could sound like an organ at lower volumes using an MXR distortion plus which was hugely popular in the late 70's. I had a original 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb which had the best reverb I ever heard to this day. I found the combination of a Fender amp and 355 sounded great for rock, but outstanding for smoky jazz. You could but these all day long in the late 70's for 250 dollars. If I ever wanted to replace it, I think the route to go would be a used boutique clone which can be had for under 1000 and sound more like the real deal, the reissues sound pretty close, but reverb and tremolo just doesn't have that old school magic.
I also don't like dumble drive sound, it something in between fender and marshall, resembles the sound of wind instrumets (probably Ford likes it). I like Fender original sound, clean and dirty. But any way, the tone stack on ODS located before the OD section, so you can try to adjust OD character in different manner, I think
@@johnnathancordyYou can remove the bright cap on vib channel of your DRRI 65, the vib channel will be more usefull in this way. The normall channel was voiced as bassman blackface, it's not Deluxe Reverb voice at all. And replace C12K speaker as well, use C12Q instead (original Deluxe Reverb 64 speaker btw)
@@johnnathancordybtw the two rock designes their amps according to the dumble steel string singer amp (based on fender silverface amps). Such a brilliant presence on the top, but bit harsh with OD - try built in two rock crunch. ODS and SSS are totally different amps, you probably prefer the SSS more
Christ .. why oh why this poxy obsession with Dumble , GOAT’s and Legendary whatever’s , just enjoy the tone you’re playing , you don’t need a klon / Dumble / Zen drives to make great music , enough , just demo the pedal , you do a great job , the Joyo stuff is hit and miss but , get a good one that suits you playing and you’re laughing 🥳
That’s not the object tho, is it? It’s about trying to see if the cheaper pedal can sound like, or better, the “original”. Not make the ZD sound like the cheaper pedal.
@@TeleTonemonkey For anyone who REALLY cares about tone, the best sound and response wins, no matter the cost. However, if you can get your tone with no compromises, without spurious expense, so much the better. Of course I can't speak for you, but given the choice (with all other considerations being equal), I personally prefer, NOT to be gouged . . . .

Tai chi is great for the hips
I noticed on TPS that Robben Ford was using his Zendrive with the tone knob fully on or near it. His sound has a fair amount of bite.
Yeh - Jake said he also basically sets up the drive in a specific way just behind where it changes in terms of drive flavour
Well it has the BLOOM sound for sure at 11:32. Nice vid.
Demo tune is wonderful, Thank you. I may have to get a bigger pedal board..... Probably I need to learn to tweak what I have.
Probably…
I own a tai chi and it’s wonderful

You need to try the UA pedal.

Nice looking pedals.

I see he’s still digging. Lol
Zen Driveish pedals seem to sound better with humbuckers, singlecoil realm I do prefer other options.
100%

Sounds as if Ford prefers it to an actual Dumble drive channel.
Soundwise, there is less than 1% difference which wouldn't be audible in a full band mix.
They both sound the same to my ears.
Check out the demon FX Z-drive clone. VERY close to the Zen drive. Ethically questionable, but people who are buying those were never going to fork out £250 on a pedal anyway…
Must confess I have found the Demon pedals to be very good.

Stop the search please, try put your jack direct into the amp for a while and enjoy? 👍
Wait till you get your hands on the Flex Prime and start playing with dumble super clones. lol

@@johnnathancordy Yes there are already clones of the Two Rock Amps on the cloud. Not sure if they have done any super clones of it though.
@@johnnathancordy But wait! Theres more!! lol All your plug ins? Yeah you can clone those too!! Isnt that rediculouse?!!

Robben is often using a Tele or a Les Paul though? The Zendrive is the most consistent part of his rig over the last 2 decades?

No Touchy my Taichi
How about some Vertex dumble pedals? Would be cool to hear
Who wants to promote that lying hack Mason? Cordy criticized him in a video once, so I doubt they’ll ever happen.
They both sound really good but the TaiChi sounds muffled and lacking that bite on the top.
I think chucking the voice control up a little more might get it that touch closer!

i bought the tai chi. too much gain. too squishy. still kicking myself for selling my zendrive 10 years ago.
Obviously, very minimal tweaks of the controls could make them sound EXACTLY THE SAME. Just sayin' . . . . .
They sound pretty similar to me, I think I'd nudge the voice up a smidge on the Tai Chi and it'd be more difficult to tell apart I'd imagine
