This is the video that I’ve been waiting for. Some parts of my house foundation need this repair. The parging has come off in some places. And in other places the backfill has settled, and the bare concrete foundation wall has been exposed. As soon as the warm weather arrives I’m doing this. Thanks Mike.

One difference between the use of regular Portland
mixes and the fast dry compounds is the shrink cracking & checking issue.
Those newer products seem to shrink a lot less.

Mike, today I went over to a friend’s old house where I repaired the stone foundation “Mike Style” last year and it’s holding up great. I paint every patch job with Portland and it really works. I even showed my young friend how I learned how to do it from your videos and now he’s doing more repairs on his own. Your experience has benefitted me a lot and I pass it on whenever I get the chance. Thanks and keep those videos coming!

Old school bonding allows you to instantly apply mortar or topping-------terrific! The chemical bonding agent causes the Mason to wait.

Nice...no elmer's glue either! Water only! Maybe sometime you could explain why the water bonds the two coats. You know...with the crystals growing and all. Can't wait till we have green grass like that again. This winter was rough.

I think at 4:06 it should be one part masonry sand 1/2 part mortar and 1/2 part Portland cement

Could you use a stucco base coat mix for the first layer? I am wanting to refinish my block foundation that had been stucco' d over. I tried to remove the old stucco with a roto hammer, but couldn't get it all off. I love your videos. Keep up the great work.

So Portland cement is what you used to make a soupy bonding agent and the masonry s type mortar is what you uses along with the Portland mixed to fill the major gaps?

Love your videos Mike, learned so much…I just had a small garage built with concrete blocks as a foundation. I want to cover the blocks with stone veneer, do i use the same mix, one scratch coat, on the blocks first before I add the stones?

Awesome video I enjoyed watching. I poured a gas fire pit at my house and it was smooth Concrete but I wanted texture. I made a paste like your stucco mix but used a 3/8 map roller. I'm thinking you could use a smaller one 4" on that. I just put it on heavy on roller and rolled it on, looks great. Have you ever done it like that before?

Hi Vilson, I never seen a stucco building that didnt get cracks, some of the newer products have some stretch, but buildings expand and contract, thanks mike
Great video mike. Quick question if a water leak is coming in, would you recommend taking off all the concrete/mortar on the inside on a foundation? I have a sand/stone foundation and it seems in the 80s or so they parged it with Portland cement and portland white paint. Only problem is the wall won't breathe with that covering. Removed a whole wall of parging but today noticed a smaller leak near the floor. Started removing the stuff like a dentist but most of it is staying, even though the wall is damp behind. Getting some gutter repairs and digging a french drain to stop it from coming as much.
Hi Jedi, I never seen a leak that could be stopped from the inside, I never had problem with Portland, motar always flaked up and fell off when I used it, there are some others with different ideas but somehow I would think it's from the outside, I hope it helps Mike

@@MikeHaduck Yup. One just keeps their fingers crossed that nothing breaks on a newer vehicle. Having electric motors instead of a cable for an emergency brake, plastic gas pump in the gas tank, plastic water pump, computer controlled everything, etc. We are stuck with what is offered.
at @4:04 there 2 parts to 1/4+1/4 which is 2 parts to 1/2 part which is 4 to 1. I think you meant to write 2 parts sand to 1/2 S +1/2 Portland which is 2 to 1 , sand to cement.

How is 1/4 s mortar and a 1/4 Portland 1 part? That’s only 1/2 bucket 25% + 25% is 50%. I’m confused.
Hi Matt, at one time not so long ago there was only motar, portland and sand and each mason in there area would mix accordingly to their weather and what they were doing, when I work on foundations my mix is usually 1/2 bucket of Portland 1/2 bucket of mortar and 2 buckets of sand, now you can buy the premix S mortar with it all combined and just add water, I would do a little experimenting where it is least seen, wait a couple days and see how it is comming out, I show what I use in each video, after watching more on the subject I think you will get it, Mike

Mike, I thought the difference between mortar and cement was the sand. This video shows the product as type S cement but you say mortar. I am so confused! My area only has type S mortar ( with sand) so what is the recipe with that product? Thanks

Is the ready to use type S mortar suitable for parging as is or does it need to be fortified with bonding agent and/or extra Portland cement? Thanks
Are there any adhesives for concrete that impress you, years ago at my nanas house guys went over her tile roof with what they call pointing mix i think the premade bucket said , some of it fell down onto concrete drains while they were working on the roof, man that stuff stuck on hard you cannot remove it, so im thinking it has an adhesive in it.
