    I'm an ex cop. When the victim here says 'the other guy is getting away', I'm here to tell you that these cops don't care. When you're dispatched to a job, if you come back with someone in cuffs - it doesn't matter who they are, or what they did or didn't do, or what their rights are - and you have probable cause to have arrested them, then your job is done. It's a body count game. Bring back someone in cuffs, do the paperwork, go and get another one. If it's the 'right' guy, then cool. If not, as long as you had PC, it's someone else's problem, not yours. No cop is ever interested in what your rights are or whether you're guilty, or even if you're connected to the crime. They just want to arrest someone, with probable cause, and then go home.
    If they could have busted this dude for something, they would have cuffed him, put him in the cruiser, driven him downtown and forgotten about the 'suspect with a knife'. Being dispatched to a job is just an excuse to go out and find people to arrest.
    I lasted less than 2 years in the job. It was soul destroying. Unless, like a lot of my former colleagues, you don't have one.

      @freddispaghetti 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Also, the “Americans’” (quotes because last time I checked America was many countries in 2 continents) rights are not constitutional rights. They are natural rights that ALL people have. Our constitution just (supposedly) stops the government from infringing on them inside our borders. You have the same rights, whether or not your Charter confirms them.

    • @roomwithapointofview
      @roomwithapointofview 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      @@freddispaghetti Similar isn't the right word.
      In some regards yes.
      But we have no Terry v Ohio and the cops can't just pat you down.
      Although we still have an abundance of people ignorant of the laws and Charter, just like in the U.S..
      In certain regards we have stronger protections on some things.
      ""Police can search you if they have reasonable grounds to believe you are carrying a concealed or prohibited weapon. Police can search you if they have reasonable grounds to believe that you are carrying illegal drugs or alcohol that will be used for an illegal purpose."
      We are not plagued by Terry vs Ohio, and the police cannot just search you.
      Had you been more up on what you are commenting about you would realize the cop is breaking the law.
      So what was his reasonable grounds? A phone call giving the wrong address?
      His first mistake is he should have started the conversation with, "I reserve the right to retain and instruct counsel without delay."
      "Once there is an arrest or detention, section 10(b) imposes a number of positive duties on the detaining officer: (i) the duty to inform the detainee of his or her right to retain and instruct counsel without delay and of the existence and availability of legal aid and duty counsel; (ii) if a detainee has indicated a ...Jun 29, 2023"
      "Without Delay. As soon as the right is engaged, the police have an obligation to assist the detainee in exercising that right "without delay." The police must also cease questioning or otherwise attempting to elicit evidence until the detainee has been given a reasonable opportunity to retain and instruct counsel."
      The moment you say those words, a cop will 9 times out of 10 stop asking questions because anything you say after that statement to a question they ask with be inadmissible in a court of law."

    I have asked several places. Including places run by lawyers.
    Why are LEOs addicted to IDing citizens who have done nothing illegal. I have seen addicts less fixated on another fix, than LEOs are at IDing. Makes me ponder in they are creating a database of citizens who don't surrender their rights at their demands.

      Canadians never had the right to bear arms. It was illegal to carry a handgun as far back as 1892 if you couldn’t prove need. The Canadian “Biil of Rights” didn’t come about until 1982. Before that the Canadian government was still taking native children forcibly from their families and sending them to “schools”.
      Too many people in the US think Canada is a progressive country because of the draft dodgers that fled the US in the 60’s and 70’s because Canada would not extradite them back to the states.
      Canada is still a commonwealth country that is loyal to a king.
      Canada is a constitutional monarchy. We are a representative republic. It makes me sick every time I hear an elected representative in the US talk about our “democracy”. A democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what’s for dinner.

    He talked to cops, and answered some of their questions, so they were able to extend the detention, and claim it was never a detention because this guy never shut his mouth. He now has no recourse against these lawless cops because his participation in the conversation makes it a consensual encounter. Everyone has the right, but very few have the ability, to remain silent. Record, identify cop(s), demand a lawyer for all questions, invoke your fifth amendment right, then don't say another word no matter what. It will reduce the time wasted with lawless cops like these, and protect your ability to hold them accountable.
