    I did volunteer work at high altitude on the Colorado Trail one day last summer. It involved a 10 mile round trip hike and I wore my hiking boots that I had been using for years. However, I hadn't used them on hikes longer than 4-5 miles. When I got back to the parking lot, I was limping with a big blister on one foot and two blackened toenails on the other foot. So much pain! The other volunteers in the group weren't wearing hiking boots at all. They all had trail runners. I asked for the brand and they told me they were Hokas. I got a pair and OMG, they are a game changer. Like walking on pillows! The toe box is mostly nylon so it flexes with pressure. Now, they might not keep your feet as warm as boots, but I'll take that risk. So that's what I'm wearing on my upcoming EBC trek. And no, I'm not being paid by Hoka to say any of this.
    I could certainly feel your pain!

      Hi, Mike! Thank you so much for the wonderful message. That so sweet that you volunteered on the Colorado Trail; that sounds awesome! Oh, no! That sounds exactly like my experience with the black toenails. Feel good shoes are a dream, but gosh, they are hard to find. Thank you so much for the recommendation and for sharing your positive experience with Hokas. I don't think I've ever heard of that brand, but I will definitely check them out. Thank you again for watching! I really hope to see you here again soon. Mandi

    24:25. The solution is simple. You purchase one shoe size bigger than normal on hiking boots.
    Use thin inlay soles to adjust fit. Tighten the lacing a bit when heading down long/steep sections.

    @ blacken toenails issues caused during steep descent - I used to get that bruised toenails condition while descending steep slopes during my youth. Here's a few simple steps you can adopt on your future hikes. (A) Do check your lace tension, ensure laces are tighten to avoid ankle sprains. (B) Relax both knees during descent. (C) Set a constant short pacing, do not rush. (D) Avoid following a fixed straight path line during descent, adapt to walking in a zig-zag pattern. (E) Try walking sideways, rather than taking steps with toe pointed forward. (F) Deploy to use trekking poles to grant improved stability if required.

    Oh that is right, you were sick on your EBC Trak. Glad you got better. Wouldn't be better to take the medicine before the onslaught of symptons, (i.e., 2 weeks prior) rather than after the fact? That must have been so scary for you. You are a very brave woman. I know it would be for me. My luxury backpacking items would be to carry a Kindle, and a GoPro/camera, so I can easily read wherever and whenever I want and memorialize my adventure. Namaste!

    • @GoMandiMartin
      @GoMandiMartin  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hey, Stephanie! Does anyone call you Steph? 😀 I have this natural desire to want to do it each time I write you, but I thought I would check first ✨ Oh, yes: the medicine should definitely be taken before, but gosh; I had just been crossing my fingers and hoping that I wouldn't experience any AMS since my medication didn't arrive to my address in the states until after I had already been in Nepal for several days. By the time I was sick, I think I would have tried just about anything if I thought it would help; it was miserable. Aw, thank you; I was quite scared, too; it's so scary to be so far from home and so ill. But, while it may have always been graceful, a summit is a summit haha! Oh, yes, you've chosen a great luxury item in a Kindle. Electronic charging can be a bit of a challenge there, but I know how serious us adventurers get over making sure our luxury items actually give us a luxury haha. That made me laugh out loud. The GoPro, or - as I have - even a cheaper generic action camera (if the GoPro is too costly, etc.) is such a great idea, and for me, camera gear is an absolute necessity, so I say, go for it! It would be such a shame to get to the top and not have videos of it. If you go and film, I hope that you will share your video(s) with me 🥰

    Taking AMS medicine with you is great advice. If you fly into Lukla, the next stage is scooting up to Namche at 3500m. It can knock the stuffing out of you. The advantage of the Jiri walk-in was the extra acclimatization. I had mild AMS once, and that was at 4,500m. I took the AMS meds and peed for England the entire night [the loo was in the garden and the moonlit views of Ama Dablam were well worth a few shivers]. By the morning my headache had gone and never came back.
    Travelling solo it's really important to listen to your body. People have died of AMS at Namche, so well done for mentioning the topic. I was impressed that the Nepalis had signs everywhere explaining the symptoms and dangers. The basic rule is 'descend at least 500m if you have nausea and a persistent headache.'

    Well that answered my question about the meds. Thats a bummer the VA failed you like that. Thats another interesting fact about you. You are a vet. You are an amazing woman. As far as filters, well you live and learn with those. I never knew I needed them until I started flying drones and doing cinematic work with those. They are a must because you get no shadows at all up in the sky around nothing. Filters are amazing though. I use Paasonic cameras myself. I have 3 of those puppies,. My camera never leaves my side. I love it haha. I usually wear gloves when out trekking around. Just to save the hands a bit. I guess thats why I never encountered a problem with too much sun

    Hi Mandi,
    I don’t see on your list the sleeping bag you left behind. From your videos I understood that you didn’t have one. I’m in similar situation, as I want to go alone and warm sleeping bag could make the pack too heavy and I might need a porter. There is so much confusion regarding this topic, as some people say that you totally must have very warm sleeping bag but some reported afterwards that they didn’t use it at all or maybe once or twice.
    What was your experience?
    Is there a point messaging some tea houses and reserving extra blankets?
    Thank you for any advice!

    • @GoMandiMartin
      @GoMandiMartin  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi, Krzysztof! It's so nice to hear from you. Gosh, yeah, the sleeping bag situation was such a dilemma for me, too. I had packed and unpacked it so many times in prepping for my trip. I had considered taking my teeny down sleeping bag because it's all that I could squeeze into my pack due to space and weight; however, taking my sleeping bag would have meant not taking something else, and with a goal weight (dry) of only 20 pounds, the sleeping bag had to stay home. Thankfully, I didn't freeze at night -- though, I definitely could have been more comfortable. There were nights when I slept in all of my layers including my full rain suit to stay warm enough. but, I think I would have been that cold even with a sleeping bag. I am almost always cold, so the nights were really tough. It got down to about 43 degrees from what I saw on my digital thermometer, but it was probably colder than that while I was asleep and not staring at it. Knowing what I know now, I would have tried to sleep at home with only a thin sheet under me and a large comforter over me in 40 degree F temperature to see what gear I needed, i.e., wool layers, gloves, hat, etc. Oh, I slept in a thick hat and gloves every night, and that helped a lot.
      Here's my thoughts: almost every room had 2 beds, so you can sleep with both blankets; the second blanket can help replace a missing sleeping bag. I did ask for more blankets on the one occasion that I ended up with one single room, and that was easy enough, and there was no extra charge. It's really hard to reach the tea houses, and regrettably, I'm not sure that they would be able to save an extra blanket for you ahead of time, and it's nearly impossible to contact the teahouses as they don't advertise the way most of the rest of the world does. One tea house came with heated blankets included for the night. This is just my opinion, but I loved not having a porter. If I were to do it again, I would still choose to ditch my sleeping bag over having a porter 😀 I hope this helps! Mandi
      P.S. Here's the small sleeping bag that I originally planned on taking because it's goose down and ultra light; however, it's not very warm: amzn.to/3UiH56e

    I am very curious to learn how you were able to get TIMS for EBC in May given the fact solo trekking was banned from this Apr. Thanks.

      Good evening. I understand that question, and I've gotten it a lot. It's actually perfectly legal to trek the Everest Base Camp trail solo with a Trek Card; the Trek Card is used for solo trekkers while the TIMS card is used for guided treks. This coming Thursday, Jul 27, I have a Premiere video that walks through how I did the trek legally. Thank you again for writing, and I hope to see you here again soon 😀

    Getting black toes might be tied with wider or small shoes; recommend trying shoes afternoons rather than mornings.

      These are such great thoughts and suggestions. It's been really hard in the past to find wide shoes, but I'm so thrilled that they are starting to become more widely made and sold. But gosh, they can be expensive haha💰

      Hi, Green! Wow, that's such a great idea and suggestion! I had no idea. I definitely have very Asian feet haha. White skin, Asian feet. I will look around for that and similar stores; thank you so much! I hope that you are doing great, and I look forward to chatting again very soon ✨
