- A half hour of starting some letters from scratch using Glyphs for (mac only) glyphsapp.com (free trial, too)
This is just something I do as a bit of a warm up before starting actual work (procrastination😬). Occasionally I'll revisit stuff like this and fully build out the typeface. There's no talking because 1) I only speak English 👎 and 2) I think the lack of talking will help focus your attention what I'm clicking on (and I think you'll figure out the "why", inferring from context!).
The only bit of knowledge that you can't see (because I'm using a keyboard shortcut) is the insertion of handles between two point. It's easy to do though: if you hold down the OPTION key while you click on any part of the line between two points, handles will be generated.
This video is raw. No edits here. I didn't practice. Just messing around, so sure some of this stuff could be done better. But if you've never seen letters made from a blank canvas and want to see how, hopefully this will help. I did lowercase letters because most people go straight for ALL CAPS (because they're easier). But I think you'll get more of a personality working in your font if you start with lowercase. As you can see, elements are reusable (and you could make components if you really want to do more with less, but there are good reasons to skip that which I might get into with another video).
Get the source! 👉 the glyphs file (and UFO file) that I created here is available for free on Github github.com/sur... This video isn't sponsored by Glyphs (or anyone), it's just my preferred software for type design.

I'm with Daniel. MORE! Very nice to watch this and chill out. Thanks!
Just did another, BOOM!
Really nice video! More of that thanks :D could you eventually explain what the numbers are for when you go to the "Master, regular etc." menu...?
That's the stem value settings (which looks different now in Glyphs 3). I simplify it here, but the key is to identify the consistent values for how wide (vertical) and how tall (horizontal) glyph stems are.
This is my kind of slow-tv! More!
Thanks for listing your plugins!
