  • In this video I show you how to make a swarm trap. Its cheap because all I use is a bucket and easy because there is no trap to build from wood.

    I thought you would take the brush back after your little son fiddled around a while. I kept watching just to see if you would do what I hoped: let him try, then show him more details how, and let him do more: and you did. You are a GOOD DAD!! And the boy is enjoying his life with you, nice. You are outstanding in your field. And I like your swarm trap. Thanks for it all!

Can I transfer them into a beatbox in my backyard with no problem? Or should I keep them in the bucket for a few weeks

    • @OkAdventure994
      @OkAdventure994  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I’d move them into a box within a week after caught. You can put the box directly in the spot the bucket was so you don’t lose any foragers. Then move a few feet a day tell you get them in the spot you want the box to stay at for good.

    I have watched Easter eggs being made before. You pour the hot chocolate into a mould, swill it around so it touch all the international surfaces then you pour out the excess. Could a similar process be used here if you were in a rush? Or is the texture left by the paint brush bristles beneficial?

    Why not just put your entrance in the bottom of the bucket? Then it will be well protected from rain. Also, to catch larger swarms, would you ever attach two buckets (mouth to mouth) to increase the overall volume of space?
    About the breathing holes, don't the bees just propolize the holes?

    • @OkAdventure994
      @OkAdventure994  3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      To your first question about the entrance on the bottom. I will be making a few this year to test if bees will still move into swarm traps with bottom entrance. My guess is it doesn't matter. The swarm I ended up catching was 3lbs of bees and they only ended up filling less than half the bucket, so 5 gallons should get probably a 6 maybe 7lb swarm. The breathing holes have never been propolized shut because I don't leave the bees long enough in the bucket to start propolizing holes. Most I leave them is around 1 week in bucket after I have pulled it from the woods. Good questions tho. Thank for the comment.

      @@danni4213 Hi. Yes the hole in the bottom of the bucket does work. It certainly prevents rain running down the side to enter the bucket. My double bucket (think of a large minnow trap) did not catch a swarm this season. Maybe location or any of a number of reasons. I do paint some melted wax around the outside of the whole and all over the inside. I’ve also gone to writing on the outside with sharpie to tell others what it is. One lady thought she was being spied on.

      Not in middle of summer in Oklahoma. Day time temperatures reach above 100. The inside of a black bucket melts wax.

      You can just buy some yellow wax. 8 oz will do two 5 gallon buckets.

    Can you use a store bought raw honey with comb? It says it is straight from hive to bottle, no preservatives....
    I'm going to use your idea! Thank you!

      As long as there is no honey left in the comb then yes.
