Welcome to Crimson Guitars th-cam.com/users/CrimsonC... and Ben's home workshop. In this video, Ben is unboxing a little block plane that would have been most useful in the Hand Tool Only Build. This is the HP-8 Mini Block Plane by Bridge City Tool Works. Could this be Ben's new favourite low-angle block plane with added features?

Ben’s love of tools is so contagious. It is always fascinating to see the tools and watching you fix them, sharpen them then watch the woodworking porn of the tool working as it should.
I get people just want the builds but tools are so important to these builds and the proper use of them more so.

If you make your own bindings, this is a perfect way to thickness them (and braces too). At present I use double stick tape to attach 2mm wood bindings or brass rails to each side of the bottom of a Lie-Nielsen small block plane - but this little guy would be a nice upgrade from that DIY hack.

definitely would I love to see more videos of you showing good and achievable tools! I'm fed up with the bunch of crappy tools I can get in hardware stores. But I never knew where to look for good tools that are available for rather less money.

I bought an older Sergeant and an older Millers Falls block plane. They don't look as nice but they get the job done. They both together were right at $60 USD and are over 60 years old. I looked a long time to find the ones I was after but in the end I found them and won the bids on eBay. The Bridge City is a awesome looking plane and I'd love to have one. I'll have to settle for now. Still more wood to buy! Peace & Love!

Ben, that's a wonderful tool! Thankyou for your professional opinion and demo. I've been looking at getting a block plane for some time and wanting high quality, and you've helped me decide to get an HP-8 Mini Block Plane. Kudos to you, and more cool tool videos please.

    Yes, flash looking plane alright.
You haven't mentioned "Henry Eckert" low angle, adjustable mouth block plane. The HE block plane doesn't have the height adjustable fences but, it is a spectacular plane, like all his other planes.

this plane looks pretty cool, if it was a little cheaper, i'd definitely consider it
for now i'll keep looking for an old record one, as i've used one, and i find the adjustment a lot better than the veritas block planes that i've used
edit: ben, if you see this, have you ever considered getting a tormek for sharpening your chisels and plane blades? they're amazing things for sharpening lots of tools

I have an HP-8 and before I had a drum sander the skids were great for repetitive thicknessing tasks. I'd do things like rough thicknessing braces and binding in batches. Set the skids to the right height, and get through it all while listening to some music.

had another mad idea....put bearings on the depth gauges and run them in a track so they cant go up or down from the piece being planed... put the wood in the channel between them stops linear variation in thickness but you still get to feel your piece as you work it. Same thickness throughout the length of the piece and still the feel in the hand as you plane when you hit harder and softer sections of the length.
    ...hand held thicknesser??

  • @MooCow2X2
    @MooCow2X2 ปีที่แล้ว

There is one place I could see those guides being quite useful Wood binding. Since thickness needs to be very consistent. Now I’m going to steal this idea and put it on a Krenov style plane. Heh

The chiseling of the wet wood in a previous video caught my attention because I’d wondered if it was something anybody would do... meaning “lube” up the wood as one would metal while cutting it. I’ve experimented this year with some very hard woods and the only conclusion I came to was that either my jigsaw blades are not the best available or that I should have just gotten a bandsaw.

I would like more "cool tool" videos some vintage some modern some reimagining of tried and true ideas your take, and enthusiasm towards whatever you are working on or with is always entertaining, enlightening, and sometimes inspiring. That said I much prefer the older Bridge City tools over the modern counterparts even though they cost at least twice the price.

I love Tool Tuesday and i love the HP8. I bought it about a month ago and the thickness planing skids are soo useful when building smaller items. The overall quality is good, but i don't like the cutting depth adjustment with the locking nut. That came loose once or twice during use and its a such a pain to get it working again.

Nice looking little plane. My only real gripe would be that the sole is made of aluminium. I'd rather spend a little extra and get a Veritas low angle block plane (includes lateral adjustment, otherwise same features except for depth skids) with an iron sole.
