Awesome backstory, impressive visuals, flawed finale.
The idea of the piano rush is cool, but it was way too difficult and removes the tension after having to try it a billion times.
The ending, while creepy, was kinda abrupt and vague.
Still a solid effort and a worthwhile one.
Yeah, I feel the hack should've been rated higher but I struggled a lot with the ending which sadly hurt the score overall.
Ending was cut pretty short with it just being a single room and then just the ending picture with few edits. With some improvments it can be a really great hack!
@@SimpleFlips probably would have been better if you couldnt see the piano behind you while running and look the obsticles ahead of you. More suspenseful, and punishing. Imaging all you hearing BAM BOOM BANG BOOM, and that the loudness being the only indicator of how close it was to you.

I agree, the only problem I can see with that is if the piano catches up to you, you lose a lot of your vision. Worst case, you can’t see where Mario or the next obstacle is.
The maker should have make it like Rayman where the camera is in the monster.
wait, so according to the story, this thing triggers after 11 years of playtime, and the endcard shows a sign which says "toolate"
does that mean that the whole point of this thing is that Mario simply did not manage to rescue the princess in time and Bowser went completely berserk over that time?
that way, the stuff we are seeing in the hack could actually be leftovers of Bowser's doing after all this time
the gore, bups saying that they're all trapped there, asking whether Mario does know where he is or not, as if implying his guilt in what he's witnessing, like "this is where and what we are because of you, does this place seem familiar?", some of them just completely lost their minds (like that first bup which kept repeatedly saying that he's glad to see Mario)
thinking about all of this makes the whole thing even more chilling

This was what I was going for :) I didn't find a way to say it explicitly, but the fact that you can't save after the end screen means the princess is never actually rescued. Time passes, and your last save is still before you saved the princess, so she's still trapped by Bowser and subject to all kinds of fucked stuff, as seen in the ending room.
@@biobak but doesn't opening the cannon require beating the game with all 120 stars?
@@buckiez It does, but I had to open it for the hack to be playable, lol. I also had to move a tree so it didn't block the path between the castle and the cannon.
@@biobak yeah, what I meant is, if you were to get to the secret area "normally" you'd have to beat the game to do so, meaning you did save the princess

There's a string of code attached to the camera at 8037FH3G, it's tied to a timer but if you wait an extra 11 years you'll have access to a camera from further away

the fact the toads' sound clip sounds like a really slowed down and muffled "mario" to me and how subtle the end screen's changes are honestly creeped me out a bit

Remember everyone making a spooky game, the more times you die the less scary it is, since dying and respawning is just a reminder that there isn't actually anything at stake and it's just a video game.
What modern horror games gets wrong. This is Why I like those horrors that instantly delete your save when you die
this should have really have done that, since it already deletes your save like as shown by simpleflips's big goof, i think there should have only been 1 life to complete it

The problem with only one life is that he died a *lot* in that section. If he somehow wouldn’t have resorted to savestates, he’d have to do the entire process again and again.

@@HarvoSpoon I don't believe it does, you need a star to create a save, otherwise it remains empty if I remember right since the game never saves till you get a star/key.

My theory was that bowser killed mario, and 11 years later Luigi (having taken the late E. Gadd's place) Had the technology to revive him without a 1-up (Bowser had taken all the 1-ups and coins).
I just think Mario procrastinated lol

Honestly with the piano chase, they shoulda added coins to guide where the player needed to go, which is something Crash Bandicoot did during those chase sections with its fruit.
So the piano section is flawed in some key elements, but lets go with how it is compared to Crash. In Crash they used the game's "Coins" to guide the player and the "piano" goes at the default player speed. In Crash you can slide jump to go faster then its "piano".
All they had to do was add some coins, slow down the piano to run speed, and it is perfect, add a red coin when you're coming to a long jump as well, similarly use grating when near pits to give indication to the player long jumping is bad. Also remove the chains as you have no indication those are there unless they are in spots you can't long jump over in which case they can "Save" you.
Thanks for the feedback! I thought about this, but you might have noticed the hack didn't have any coins. I didn't want to reward the player for going the right way, I wanted the hack to be a guilt trip, a journey in isolation where you'd wait for that one familiar Mario object to remind you that it's still a Mario game, but that hope never comes. Coins were also bright yellow and I didn't want to change the color because it would have changes it throughout the whole game. I should definitely have guided the player though, maybe with a trail of blood or something. I'll take your feedback into consideration for the next hack I do!

@@yourehereforthatarentyou I can't speak for OP, but for me, it was because it's very unexpected and the uncanny valley kinda kicked when it popped up, so my heart jumped into my throat.

I would have liked this hack more if there was actually more to it.
Don't get me wrong, it's really great (in it's own morbid way) but I would have liked it more if there was more of an explanation to the plot, more of an explanation as to why this happened after 11 years of gameplay, it would be so much more better.
Though, it is still great. I liked the chase portion of it and the atmosphere.
These competitions usually don't leave enough time to do something with more of a story. I highly doubt the creator wanted it to end there but with time constraints wouldn't have made it in if he didn't cut it off.
Well, it was a hard-coded timer according to the creator. Which means it was likely "made by Nintendo"

According to some theories in these comments, the 11 years would be a point that the game considered you took way too long and it would be "too late" to save the princess or the castle or anyone. Bowser lost it in that time, the Toads have lost all hope and now you're seeing the aftermath of your inaction.
Comment just above me is right! That was my plan for a story. Also, I made the hack in only a few days, so I didn't have time to include more than that, I wish I had though.

Hot damn, that...sound, from Toads, the first being ran up to at like 3:56 is so freaking creepy. Good God. Toad is officially creepier than ReDeads.
In my eyes this is very inline with how an actual creepypasta of a game is like, this and “special for you” are two of the most creepiest sm64 rom hacks
in the ending, i would have appreciated for the hack creator to get someone with a good mario impression to shout something rude like "THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!" or something
now that i think about it, the voice should have been glitched out like the toad's speech

the crash bandicoot camera doesnt work in other games because it was designed literally for crash with the chase scenes being paced with plenty of time to escape.
