- The Detomaso Pantera combines the best of Italian Style and American Reliability into an iconic 70's and 80's super car. The Detomaso Pantera was produced from 1971 to 1993 with a total of about 7,260 cars were produced but only 187 of them being Pantera GT5-S also known as the Group 5 Pantera. As the last evolution of the Pantera the GT5 is the most powerful and most luxurious, with upgrades to the body and interior. Not only is it wicked fast, but it is comfortable to drive around town and easy on the wallet when it comes to maintenance, which just adds to the cars desirability and user friendly nature.

I'm not even a 'car person' and i LOVED this.
My all time favorite exotic, and one of my top 5 cars I want to own. It’s better looking than a Ferrari or Lamborghini from that era...and the sound of an American muscle car power plant mated to a ZF transmission/transaxle is just the perfect compliment to the looks.
The car was actually designed by Tom Tjaarda, an American. I was fortunate to meet him a few years before he died. Great guy. Love these cars.
I loved the Pantera as a kid, I had a poster of one by my bed. I still love them. I am looking for one right now, I probably will end up with a early 70's and put the GT5-S after market kit on it

I remember when these Panteras started rolling into the Lincoln-Mercury dealers in the early seventies. I thought it was the most awesomely beautiful car I'd ever seen. It still is. Wonderful styling that's still beautiful today. Yeah, I remember they were pretty pricey, more than I could afford.
They were priced above the Corvette but below the Ferrari Daytona while still being able to keep up with them

Speaking from the perspective of someone who actually owns a Pantera, the commentary about how "cheap" the car is to work on is completely untrue. Yes, the engine itself isn't expensive to work on, but your wallet will be drained fairly quickly on practically everything else with the car. That "bullet proof" transmission is a ZF 5DS-25 and parts for it are incredibly hard to find and very expensive. There is only one company in the USA that I know of that builds the gearboxes new and most transmission shops won't even touch it. A new gearbox, when last I priced one, is about $16,000. Used ones sell for about half that depending on condition. Even simple body parts like those Carello tail light lenses on the car in the video are expensive. Mine were cracked by the previous owner backing the car into his garage door runner and it took me three months before a pair finally turned up on Ebay. They were nearly $500 for the pair and were shipped from Italy.
The Pantera is also known for it's terrible electrical system that is prone to failure.The stock cooling system is inadequate at best for the car. Overheating was (and still is) a common problem for cars that haven't had their entire cooling system upgraded. The cars also rust from the inside out due to bad weatherproofing and sealing. It's also not "easy on the wallet" for maintenance because you won't be taking that thing into Jiffy Lube for an oil change. Even Ford dealerships will turn you away and your local auto parts store has probably never even heard of the car.
When you get right down to it, the engine on the car is the only thing that's somewhat inexpensive. But the cost for literally every other aspect of the car is very, very expensive in terms of parts and maintenance and that's before you've even found anyone in your area that's even willing to touch the car if you're not doing the work yourself.

Truly a slick car, I never heard of before, to me looks actually nicer, than another, more known Italian classics from same period.
That 351 V8 in that Pantera powered our Aussie 1971 Ford Falcon XY-GTHO, the worlds fastest 4 door sedan all the way until the Lotus Carlton of the 90's rocked up 😁, this lady is telling the truth about its reliability as it was mainly in our Aussie racecars at that time. 😉👍

The snobs will say the flares are vulgar, but I like them. Those deep concave wheels are beautiful, too. I wouldn't even mind the Countach wing, just to be extra. 😃

The flares are a serious improvement IMO but I was a little kid in the 80's so I grew up with them that way.

Uber macho. Crude but gorgeous. I'd say the golden age of supercars, I'm terms of technology and performance, is now, but in terms of styling and charisma, Italian supercars of the 60s, 70s and 80s reign supreme.
With the aerodynamics, windtunnels etc. That are used today cars seem to have lost their style and are all starting to look alike.
I want a Pantera so bad I can taste it...

i had one 20 years ago , in red , and i tell you honestly, you will not have this car...
no one could handle the motor overheating problems these days ...no one !!!!! ...problems over problems , cause of this american engine who could nt cooled down , even at the cold germay aurobahns ...
Gulfstream-TV Studios They are pretty well sorted with a big aluminum rad and updated fans. Overheating is not really a problem anymore.

I have1995 one ton ford van with a 351 Cleveland in it. Thing is so fast. Love this van.

Beautiful , I drove in late models and was in love , back in the day in NJ Meadowlands car important , that’s where I seen the most exotic cars and drove on all of them I was only 16 years old and worked cleaning the cars only for a few years then the owner died Joe Mamoro died and then they closed the place , now I am car crazy

Hell yes for flares, so motorsport. Love (well integrated) flares. Put flares on a lawn tractor and it looks better.

I have always loved Panteras but they did have some problems. The often over heated. There was no rustproofing. The electrical system was not great. But over the years fix's were found for all of that so today a well sorted out Pantera can truly be reliable. And the 351 Cleveland motor can make crazy horsepower.
Big engine in a compact car = heating issues 😁, it's pretty cool you can put better stuff in it now to make it more reliable.
Best of both worlds. Reliable Ford Engine, Italian design. This was truly my favorite of all exotics of all the 80's car with Lamborghini Countach a close second.
Nostalgic VID....
1971 Ford 351 Boss Engine which was basically a 351 Cleveland 4V with 4 bolt main, mechanical camshaft/lifters and an aluminum intake manifold. Ford had it rated at 335 BHP but that was wildly low, probably closer to 375 BHP, the Cleveland valves were as big as a big block chevy and were canted like them too. All you had to do was put a big cam and big carb and headers and the BHP would go right to mid to high 400's.
Sweet ride, liked it since I was a kid. Love the new model, hate it's high price.
You didnt mention the GT4 version with big flares & a wing.
I got to drive an early model in '71. The owner trusted me with his new "baby" as we were both racers. He in NHRA & me in the Camel GT series. I remember how well it drove

If I didn't love the Lotus Esprit so much, the Pantera would be my favourite.
I've had my 1972 Pre L Pantera for over 18 years. About years ago, it underwent a complete restoration/modification with a 500hp Cleveland engine update, fuel injection, flush windshield, all leather C4 Corvette seats, leather dash and firewall, and I drive it on canyon runs every weekend. I don't like the wide bodied cars as much as the original svelte Tom Tjaarda design, and really dislike the Countach wing, but all Panteras have a stance that represents the best of Italian Wedge design. And the sound is ferocious!

Apparently later versions fitted with the Windsor units were the least powered, 250hp as opposed to the Clevelands 350hp, with corresponding reduced performance, some were bored out to over 400 cu ins. Still one of the best poster cars alongside the Countach and Boxer.
I want that 5 speed in my 70 Mustang behind my Cleveland lol. Something that was missing behind the m code Cleveland Mustang..
I now have a highly modified AOD but a manual gearbox is always better and less headache then automatic

That gulf livery Ferrari 360 Challenge is interesting. The interior of the Pantera is typical Italian knowing that the gauges don't point to zero.
Yeah. The 360 is a wrap so it can be changed easily. Not sure enzo would approve of the gulf livery.

To add this on my goal build i would love it even more if it was on my Forza Motorsport game or even the most recent Forza game called Forza Horizon 5 IV gave replays on there wish list ahead of time but they haven't seen it yet i added not just the Pantera to the list his others vehicle to like Mangusta i also really love the GT5 from 82 also my favorite.
GT5-S looks great with all the integrated detailed fenders and wood dash but it still needs the sharp US spec bumpers. It's not complete without them. About the only car from the 70's that looked good with them.
Those pants are crazy! Some cowboy boots and a cowboy hat would make you look perfect in the Pantera.
